Old news print (ONP) consists o sorted newspapers andother acceptable papers such as magazines, mail fyers andphone books. Producing recycled ONP requires about 60%o the energy used to make paper rom virgin wood pulp.ONP is recycled primarily into newsprint. Yournewspapers may already have some recycled content.
In 2010 Americans recycled 72% o this category.Recycling a single run o the Sunday New York Timeswould save 75,000 trees and i every American recycledjust 1/10 o their newspapers, we would save 25,000,000trees a year. Approximately 1 billion trees worth o paperare thrown away every year in the U. S. Americans use85,000 tons o paper a year; about 680 pounds per person. Each ton o recycled ONP can save 17 trees, 380gallons o oil, three cubic yards o landll space,4,000 kilowatts o energy and 7000 gallons owater. This represents 64% energy savings, 58%water savings and 60 pounds less o air pollution.

Today, more Americans than ever suffer the effects
of uncorrected hearing impairment. Estimates rangefrom 36 to 40 million, including the more transparentyet every-bit-as-important serious high frequency hear-
ing losses. Most are not even aware that their hearing is
a serious health threat, challenging their physical, men-
tal, social, and emotional
well-being.
In recent hearing aid
technology advances, thewider bandwidth ofthree
peak hearing technology
meets many of those chal-lenges unlike any technol-ogy in the past. It is our
purpose here to provide some hypothetical examples of
how this technology is far superior to ordinary singlepeak hearing aid technology, especially when delivered
in tiny open-ear devices like those shown above. We
will review some these benefits within the context of
three common hearing losses in the population.
Hearing Loss A, for instance, without amplificationwill be overpowered in moderate background noise.
Typical single peak hearing amplification will provideonly minimal speech-in-noise ability. However, with
three peak fidelity (as depicted below), additionalacoustic clues allow fordramatically improved speech
in noise ability and much better spatial function.
Audiogram B has the additional difficulty of losing
all central auditory ability in unaided condition. Ordi-nary single peak hearing provides little benefit spatially,
because one ear will sound amplified (hollow) and the
other ear will be overpowered. In wide band three peak
technology, however, having
more spatial bandwidth andless low frequency transients, one enjoys equalized sound to
normal loudness growth and
the benefits of two-eared hear-
ing.
Audiogram Cis usually ac-companied with moderate to
severe tinnitus in addition to tremendous difficulty hearing in noise. Single peak correction offers little bene-
fitmerely amplifying noise and speech. This type of
severe hearing loss, on theother hand, receives optimalbenefit with the much wider
bandwidth of three peak tech-
nology, because the acousticenvironment is larger and puts
more space (aka separation)
between the sounds in the en-vironment. Few background
sounds occur above 2KHz,
even in speech babble, so these very difficult-to-fit
losses enjoy superior speech discrimination in compet-ing background noise. Further, any existing islands of
hearing can be benefittedby an extended range, so tha
better speech understanding isenjoyed, as well as better
distance discrimination.
These and other benefits of
the new technology can be
demonstrated with variousspeech listening situations,
with music, and warning sig-
nals. Then hearing impairedindividuals and their loved ones can see and hear viv-idly how even the more serious hearing losses enjoy
benefits of listening ease, greater self confidence, and
more cognitive awareness.
