Chair chat

My name is Joe Cardamone and, together with Geoffrey Smithers, we were the Chair and Deputy Chair of the 2014 AIFST National Convention that has just been held in Melbourne. The Convention was a resounding success with over 530 people attending over the 4 days. There were many highlights during the convention, too numerous to name them all. However special mention must be made of the Sunday program, which was dedicated to Australia’s young food scientists, with presentations given by young scientists followed by a career planning workshop. It was great to see Australia’s next generation of food scientists in action. Alisa Camplin-Warner then opened the welcome reception with an inspirational tale on how a person who had not seen snow went on to win Australia’s first Olympic Gold Medal in aerial skiing eight years later. A truly great way to start the convention. The round table discussion on Tuesday morning discussing the topic “From mining boom to food boom – A reality?” was another highlight event that raised many issues and prompted much discussion. In total, well over 80 presenters contributed to the technical program and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the presenters for the interesting and thought provoking information they presented. I would also like to thank all the delegates for their support of the Convention and look forward to the 2015 Convention in Sydney. Please make note of the upcoming AIFST events as the Victorian branch is planning a number of both technical and social functions in the coming months. Joe Cardamone AIFST Vic Branch Deputy Chair

New members in Victoria The Victorian Branch would like to extend a very warm welcome to the following Victoria-based new

members. We encourage you to play an active role in the Institute’s activities by attending events and

networking with your fellow food scientists and food technologists. Feel free to make contact with any

of the other committee members to find out more about what the AIFST can do for you. We look

forward to welcoming you to one or more of the many exciting events lined up for the coming months.

Meet the members Dear Victorian members, Welcome to the July issue of Bulletin, 2014. This year, there have been member changes in the VIC branch committee. This month, we would like to introduce the new committee member: Shankar Cumarasamy.

Shankar Cumarasamy (AIFST VIC branch committee member)

Shankar works at Sustainable Manufacturing

Solutions focusing on engagement with the food

manufacturing sector. For those who have not heard

about this program it is an industry outreach initiative

established by a consortium of Monash University,

CSIRO, EPA Victoria, PACIA and the Victorian State

Government, to help local manufacturers improve

efficiency, productivity and profit, through innovation.

Shankar has worked in research, government and industry in New Zealand and Australia. He

has a strong background in food technology and nutrition and has held technical and

management roles in new product development, sensory evaluation and regulatory

compliance. In his current role, Shankar is helping businesses link with the science and

research community to further improve their understanding of materials, processes and waste,

and find solutions that lead to productivity, performance and environmental gains.

Shankar enjoys spending time with family and is a fan of cricket, rugby and tennis. He dreams

of one day moving somewhere warm and growing saffron.

Shankar is a professional member of AIFST and NZIFST and has recently joined the VIC

Committee to contribute towards the branch activities.

AIFST Convention Young Members Group Report

- Prepared by Celia King

It started off with one of the most efficient packing lines you’ve ever seen – those satchel bags didn’t

stand a chance. Decked out in our brilliant blue shirts we were all ready to go.

Over the three days there were nearly 35 volunteers helping out in various ways. They are from Curtin

University, Deakin University, RMIT, University of Melbourne and William Angliss Institute. From

microphone running during question time and delivering gifts and awards to each session, as well as

being a huge help to the ladies from head office at the registration desk. There were also some students

helping out in the AIFST booth in the Food Pro exhibition promoting the Institute to industry - very

successfully!

On Tuesday night a number of students attended and had a wonderful experience at the gala dinner, a

thank you gift for working so hard. I'm sure the students have made new friendships and industry

connections from this opportunity - I see these passionate students going far.

I've had a lot of positive feedback from both delegates and students about the volunteering. I hope the

students have come away from the sessions with new insight into the industry, having learnt much and

want to know more - I know I have.

A huge thank you to all the students who volunteered over the three days, you all did a great job.

Thank you.

The Young Members Group is proud to have supported the AIFST Convention. Looking forward to see

you again in the coming Young Members events.
