Carlee Delp is a senior majoring in public relations with minors in business and sociology. Aside from HVC, Carlee has been highly involved in Phi Chi Theta, a professional business fraternity, Valley Magazine and the Nittany Consulting

Group. She has held multiple internships while at Penn State including the Department of Research Communications, WPSU Public Media, and the Bryce Jordan Center. In the past, Carlee has served as an Account Associate for Blue I.V.

Boutique and The Learning Factory. This summer, Carlee will be continuing her passion for PR while working as an External Communications Intern at Verizon.

Interview with an AE: Carlee Delp

Who is your HVC client?

I could not be more excited to have the Tag app as my client this semester!

Where are you interning this summer, and what has your experience been like so far?

This summer I am interning for Verizon at their HQ in Basking Ridge, NJ. I'm working in their PR department and words cannot describe how much I have already learned. While my main functions surround social and digital content, when working at a company of this size, employees are exposed to so much more. Working with departments like government affairs, marketing, branding and legal really open your eyes to the moving parts that constantly play a role in the communications we do each day as PR professionals.

What do you love about HVC?

This is an easy answer. What I love most about HVC is the real-world experience. I've learned so much from HVC that was never even covered in the class room. Whether it be client relations, working collaboratively in a team setting, or actually seeing your campaign be executed within a real business, I've learned it through HVC. Going even further than that, HVC's professional structure and reputation really mock that of a true working environment. This alone is what I think sets HVC apart from other student-run organizations as Penn State.

What is it about PR that interests you?

What interests me most about PR is the cross between the business and creative minds. It is rare that a profession requires equal parts of both of these mental processes. I love that no day in the industry is the same and that you're always challenged to be ahead of your public.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Wimpy Buffalo Wings Over (with ranch, NOT bleu cheese), Spotify Premium and a genie

What is Carlee Delp’s key to success?

"Nothing worth having comes easy."

Emily is a junior pursuing a B.A. in public relations with minors in international studies, theatre and recreation, park, and tourism management. She is also the Co-Director of Regional Conference for the Public Relations Student Society of America. Emily also enjoys being on the PR/Marketing team for Valley Magazine.  Her other past experiences include interning at B94.5 in State College and Jenna Communications in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, Emily hopes to move to New York City or Los Angeles to work in the Entertainment PR/event planning industry. In her spare time, Emily enjoys writing, reading, relaxing on the beach and preparing to spend her spring semester in Paris, France.

A Summer of PR in the City of Brotherly Love

By: Emily Grabowski, Monarch Martial Arts Academy Account Executive

A young intern in Philadelphia simply can’t be bored with the amount of restaurants, entertainment and history that the city has to offer. I was lucky enough to accept a summer public relations internship with Jenna Communications, a boutique PR agency in the heart of the city. Not only does Jenna Communications give me the opportunity to work hands-on with clients, but I am also able to explore Philadelphia and many of the events that are held annually every summer. The first event to kick off the season was the Strides for Stroke 5K hosted by the Delaware Valley Stroke Council. The 5K was open to walkers and runners and we had many stroke survivors attend the race. Many hours went into blasting social media about the cause, planning the day of the race, and reaching out to local media to cover the event. In the end, the 5K was a record success.

Some other events of the summer consisted of promoting BeachGlow in Wildwood, N.J., running the Casey Cares Foundation Connection Party at the Philadelphia Seaport Museum, and attending an awareness event with the National Parks Conservation Association. Even though it seemed like a hectic summer, there were still many days where I was able to enjoy time with my fellow interns. We would grab frozen yogurt in Old City, relax on the Philadelphia Art Museum steps, and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Interning at a small agency was an interesting change for me. While working at such a small company, I was really able to get to know my co-workers and the clients on a personal level. Something that is great about Jenna Communications, or any boutique PR agency, is that you are able to work on many different tasks with a large array of clients. One morning I would be promoting an event downtown, and the next minute I would head to a meeting with a completely different client. My favorite part about working at a boutique PR agency was that I never knew what the day would bring… That’s what makes city life so exciting, after all!
