Omaha Gives $ 8,163 Give to Lincoln Day $21,717
Thanks for Giving!
(Totals do not include 2015 matching gifts.)
Here at NET, we celebrate the New Year twice – once on Jan. 1, and again when our new fiscal year begins on July 1. Right now, I can tell you that preliminary figures show NET completed a very successful year. You play a critical role in supporting the service we provide every day to all Nebraskans – thank you! (We’ll outline all the details in the annual report that will be included in the September issue of INSIDE NET.)
And, thank you to each of you who participated in the recent online Omaha Gives and Give to Lincoln Day campaigns. We are still waiting to hear how matching gifts will boost the amount NET receives.
Looking ahead, there are exciting new programs in the pipeline that everyone in Nebraska can enjoy! PBS highlighted many of them during its annual meeting in May:
• Big Blue Live – three nights broadcast live from the thriving ecosystem in California’s Monterey Bay
• Walt Disney – American Masters profiles the master storyteller and animator-extraordinaire
• Nature Cat – PBS Kids animated series encourages children to explore the outdoors
• Ready, Jet, Go! – PBS Kids animated series about astronomy inspires future scientists
• Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson – the man who lifted a nation as he crossed baseball’s color line
And from right here in Nebraska, you’ll enjoy new seasons of Nebraska Stories and Big Red Wrap-Up; a new NET Television documentary giving voice to Willa Cather’s lost letters; NET News specials examining death penalty controversy and prison reform; and in August – Discovering Nebraska invites you to explore hidden gems across the state.
This is just a small bit of what’s coming to your screen – and what’s possible when you support NET. Join us on television, radio and online to see how NET connects you to Nebraska and the world.

Omaha Press Club Honors NET Founder NET founder and former general manager John “Jack” McBride was one of seven Journalists of Excellence inducted into the Omaha Press Club Hall of Fame on June 6. For 43 years, McBride guided the development of what is now known as NET Television and NET Radio. His efforts helped build NET into one of the nation’s premier public broadcasting organizations. As a national and international consultant, McBride helped form other state networks and guided officials in Nigeria, Egypt and the Philippines as they developed public television systems. McBride died in 2008.
The Nebraska Legislature has approved and Gov. Pete Ricketts has signed a bill providing $385,000 in state funding to cover the replacement and installation costs of NET’s KTNE/Alliance television antenna, which serves viewers in the Nebraska Panhandle.
Channel 13 was knocked off the air on April 9 when the 10-ton antenna fell nearly 1,500 feet to the ground. A temporary antenna has partially restored service for viewers in an approximately 40-mile radius around the Alliance tower. NET is working with the State of Nebraska to order the new antenna and making preparations to have it installed. The entire process is expected to take several months.
“We realize the temporary signal does not restore service to Scottsbluff and the surrounding region and that is unfortunate,” said CEO & General Manager Mark Leonard. “But, we are working as quickly as possible to order and install the new antenna so NET can restore service to all of our viewers in the area.”The following counties are in the KTNE/Alliance coverage area: Arthur, Banner, Box Butte, Cheyenne, Dawes, Deuel, Garden, Kimball, Morrill, Scotts Bluff and Sioux.
The State’s Risk Management and Attorney General Offices are actively involved in assisting NET. Crews, engineers and insurance adjusters have been on site assessing the situation, and investigating possible causes of the antenna failure. The antenna was installed in 2008 and its life expectancy is usually at least 20 years.
Translators K06KR Crawford Channel 6 and K08LN Harrison Channel 8 are also off the air until the KTNE antenna replacement is complete. NET Television viewers in those areas are encouraged to watch programming online at netNebraska.org or pbs.org. The free NET Nebraska App can also be downloaded on a mobile device for live and on-demand viewing.
Our nation invests $1.35 per American, per year in public broadcasting. NET matches every dollar of this critical seed money with six dollars in locally-raised funds.

Teacher Makes Good on Promise By Mary Jane Winquest
Donate a Vehicle
Kevin Miller recently returned to Lincoln from Philadelphia where he retired from Bucks County schools. We met over chai lattes so that I could
learn more about this teacher and administrator who specializes in education of the deaf. Now a substitute teacher for Lincoln Public Schools and adjunct professor at Concordia University in Seward, Miller has immersed himself in his home town and NET.
He credits his mother for his love of reading and lifelong interest in education and his grandmother for his pull to PBS. “She would call me and tell me what was on channel 12,” he remembers.
In addition to being an NET member, Miller has put NET in his will. “I promised myself that when I finally made some money, I would support public media and honor my family,” he said.
When I asked him about his connection to public radio, Miller launched into a story from grad school in 1978. “I roomed with a really great Palestinian student from the West Bank. He and his friends listened to NPR for more in-depth international news. I got hooked.”
Miller clearly thrives on expanding his boundaries and admittedly has a touch of wanderlust. This itinerant teacher has called many places home – Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio and Colorado. As a visiting Fulbright scholar, he taught in Taiwan and Greece. As an educator and administrator, he has been part of the evolution of instructional methods for students who are deaf, always focusing on developing their language skills.
In “retirement,” Miller is a church volunteer, TeamMates mentor and academic author. He also loves the music on NET Radio. Earlier this year, he joined the Friday Live radio audience to hear American classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein perform live at NET.
“During a career where I was frequently on the move, there was always one constant in my life: NPR.”

If you would like to support NET’s mission and the television and radio programming you enjoy every day, a charitable gift annuity could help you meet both your philanthropic and financial goals. A charitable gift annuity allows you to support NET’s work while receiving fixed payments for life. In addition, you could receive a variety of tax benefits, including a federal income tax charitable deduction.
The NET Foundation can help you establish a charitable gift annuity with your gift of $10,000, or more. In this simple contract, NET pays income to you, and if you wish, a second beneficiary. The amount you receive is determined by the size of your gift and your age(s). Any residual assets remain with NET upon your death, and the payments to you are guaranteed by the general resources of the NET Foundation. The proceeds of the gift annuity become part of a permanently restricted endowment at NET.
Gift annuities can be established using cash or appreciated securities held for longer than one year. When cash is used, more of your income is tax free. Another option to consider is a deferred charitable gift annuity. With this gift, you could receive higher payments and a higher immediate income tax deduction because the payments to you do not begin until a specified future date that you choose.
BENEFITS To You:
Generous, partially tax-free income for life
An immediate income tax deduction
Reduced capital gains taxes if appreciated securities are used to establish the annuity
Membership in NET’s Friends of the Future Society
Visit the NET website (netNebraska.org/giftplanning) for more information about charitable gift annuities, including a calculator that can provide a financial illustration based on your expected contributions and age. NET’s planned giving officers are also available to discuss planned giving options and what might work best for you.
