COASTAL CHATTER JULY 2015
ACTIVITIES from Dottie Karika
One couldn't have asked for a more beautiful morning than we had for our annual "Super Brunch" held on Saturday, June 13th @ 9 AM. We had shade all around the pool and a wonderful breeze. Thanks to Bill Hanks the Mimosas' and Bloody Mary's were great. Thanks to Steve Hildreth and Chuck Mc Knight the omelets were delicious. Thanks to the
rest of the committees all the other offerings were wonderful. To pay $2.00 for all that we got is unbelievable. Jim Karika said the prayer and of-fered a moment of silence for all members that had worked on the breakfast in past years who have now passed. There were 72 members & guest present who enjoyed both the meal and for some also the pool. It was a great time! A big thank you goes to both the "A" & "B" Teams consisting of Bob Rossi, Steve Hildreth, Rich Jermmott, Phil Kenyon, Frank La Calamita, Pete Schnauder, Chuck Mc Knight, Bill Hanks, Charlie Brady, Ted Acorn, Bernie Zikos and Jim Karika. They worked great together and as individual teams during the year!
Our next get together will be on July 4th at 4PM with a poolside cook-out. JAC will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, rolls, condiments, Iced Tea, lemonade & sodas, members will provide appetizers, salads & desserts. This is free to all paid up JAC members, guests will be charged $4.00 each. If you plan to attend contact Mary Ellen Gaffney 270-9741 or Pat Byron 319-0492 before Friday, June 30th. If you haven't paid your dues as yet please see Mimi Bloch 32 Parkwood Trl 910-821-1470. A great way to spend Independence Day with friends & neighbors. Enjoy!
The regular JAC Meeting will be on Monday, July 6th at 6:30PM. Hope to see you there!
We're thinking about "Sandwiches & Salads" by the pool for August. No date has been set but a flyer will go out with details.
Enjoy our beautiful weather, cool off in the pool, go to some of the great music venues in the area and just enjoy another great summer in Coastal Plantation. Stay healthy, hydrated and use sun screen!
Til next time, Dottie.
Ladies Lunch & Movie Bunch by Fleur McKnight
Our movie ladies braved an especially warm June 11th to devour Ruby Tuesday's luscious biscuits and were rewarded at Regal Mayfaire by lowered prices for Seniors, an unusual 6.58, (not sure on exact coin amt.) effective for all regular movies at
any time of day. Amazing!! Our tickets were even imprinted with a higher price, proof of a very recent adjustment.
Eleven of our thirteen attendees (which included Fleur's long-time friend and Coastal visitor, Mary Beers fr. Greensboro) went to see "Far From the Madding Crowd". It was at least the fifth film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's literary classic dating back to the silent era, starring Carey Mulligan as Bathsheba Everdene, a shocking feminist of her era (book written in 1874) who took over her uncle's sheep and grain farm, rides astride her horse, shoots quail, milks a cow and rejects her suitors by saying, "I have no need for a husband". The men pursuing her are Gabriel Oak, an honest, industrious shepherd, an older neighbor who is the richest man in the county and a swashbuckling soldier with a complicated, shady past.
Filmed in Hardy's beloved "Wessex" countryside in Southwest England it was full of absolutely breathtaking photography; ie: Bathsheba galloping across the green Dorset countryside in her Victorian finery and even a deadly thunder and lightening storm. As a review stated, "The brutality and frankness of Hardy's storytelling may surprise those used to more genteel period adap-tions". As for me, your movie lady, I now want to read the book! Wonderful, wonderful movie, very highly recommended by all. (Note: This movie is no longer at Mayfaire but will be showing at Thalian Hall's Cinematic soon.)
Our two "Action-Adventure ladies" went to see "San Andreas" which is, of course, the San Andreas Fault running through California and what COULD happen when it finally triggers a magnitude 9 earthquake. The story follows a search and rescue pilot (Duane Johnson) as he races to LA to save his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and after a daring rescue they make their way to San Francis-co, racing the clock to find his estranged daughter before the possible destruction of the coastline.
Our ladies said it was "just awesome", very exciting and the special effects off the charts! However, despite real seismologist' s interviews on various TV programs concerning this movie and what parts might really happen and what would never happen, they both very emphatically agreed, "I never want to live in California!!"
Mark your calendars and plan to join us on the 2nd Thursday, July 9th, for our next movie day. Call me!

TO MY COASTAL FAMILY,
I want to thank everyone that was so thoughtful in helping me to learn more about diabetes. All the books, magazines and recipes were very much appreciated.
A special thank you to Bernie for walking me through when I first found out and taking the time to sit down and explain things to me so it wasn't’ so scary and OVERWHELMING, also for the exerciser.
I would also like to give a special thanks to Frank & Rita for all the books that they continually bring to me. These books have helped me greatly.
THANK YOU ALL & GOD BLESS
Linda Henry
HELLO FROM MARGARET!
It’s been one year since I fell in my home on Cypress Circle and broke my hip! Since then, as most of you know, I’ve been living at Champions in Davis. I’m sorry this happened but I am adjusting the best I can. I walk outside when I’m feeling up to it and the weather is nice.
I miss living in my house and seeing my friends and neighbors at Coastal Plantation. I also miss my daily walks and riding my bicycle all around the community! Playing Canasta on Thursdays at the clubhouse was always something I looked forward to.
I was surprised to see some of my Coastal Plantation neighbors also living near me in Davis now. John and Leona Tooley and Lavorna Lake.
Even though I am not in Coastal Plantation anymore, I think of all of you very often with good memories and thank you for all you’ve done to make my time there as good as possible.
Sincerely,
Margaret Rozycki

Sky Watch – July Sky – by Margaret Stenerson
Yes, half of 2015 is over; so is the longest day of the year and the earliest sunrises and the lat-est sunsets of the year. It’s all down hill from here on! Gradually you will notice later sunrises and earlier sunsets, but the sun is still very high in the sky. You will see two full moons in July – the second one is referred to as the Blue Moon. And, I really hope you saw the planets Jupi-ter and Venus so close to each other in the West at dusk the last week in June.
Phases of the Moon
July 1st : Full BUCK or THUNDER Moon (looks like a Full Moon from the 30th to the
3rd) visible from sunset to sunrise
July 5th : Waning Gibbous Moon (getting smaller toward the last quarter moon )
July 8th : Last or 3rd Quarter Moon (looks like half a moon) and visible in the morning
July 12th : Waning Crescent – visible in the morning sky
July 15th : New Moon - not visible from earth
July 19th : Waxing Crescent Moon (getting larger and visible in the afternoon)
July 23rd : First Quarter Moon (looks like a half moon) and visible in the afternoon.
July 27th : Waxing Gibbous Moon (getting larger toward the Full Moon)
July 31st : Full BLUE moon, the second of the month
Planets visible:
July 9th Venus in the evening at greatest illumination
July 18th Venus and Jupiter and the moon in the west after sunset
July 25th Saturn near the moon
Constellations visible:
The “Big Dipper” high in the sky, “Summer Triangle” of stars are visible . The three stars are: Altair in the constellation Aquila; Deneb in Cygnus; and Vega in Lyra.
Last week of July: Orion, the Hunter, appears at dawn as a ghost of winter.

COASTAL CHATTER
MANAGERS MEMO
This month I am going to do a complete 360 on this section of the Chatter. With everything going on locally and globally I believe we each need to take a step back and look at what is important in our
everyday lives and go back to our roots so to speak. It seems like everybody has fallen into the “Me First” mentality and have forgotten the golden rule; “Do unto others as you would have then do to you”. The world would be such a better place if we would each take a step back, take a deep breath and look at ourselves before complaining about what somebody else is doing or not doing right in our opinion. Take a minute of thought to think about how that comment or action will be taken by the person or persons it is directed at. The news is full of people quick to point fingers but slow to respond to themselves and their actions; everybody should believe as I do is never going to work. Differing opinions done in the correct way can make all the difference in the world!
I promise this will be last soap box moment this year but with this community, residents and the activities that go on here at Coastal Plantation I believe (my opinion I know) that this community is just that; A Community!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you again for making Coastal Plantation the place to “Get In On The Good Life”!
Tim Weaver
REMINDER for residents with pets:
Please make sure to have your pets on a leash while outside. If you are having guests over that also have pets, please make sure their pets are on a leash while outside and they pick up after them.
Thank you for keeping Coastal Plantation clean!
