I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a new Parish Councillor. My name is Andy Petersen and I have lived in the village for approximately a year now. I have spent most of my life in the local area, growing up in Bradwell and attending East Norfolk Sixth Form College. From there, I went to Loughborough University to study a degree in Sport and Exercise Science, before returning to the University of East Anglia to undertake teacher training. I have been a primary school teacher for the last four years, specialising mainly in upper key stage 2 (Year 5 & 6). In my spare time, I play cricket for Great Yarmouth Cricket Club. I'm very much looking forward to getting involved with the various projects being undertaken within our community.

The Honesty Book Exchange Point

The Honesty Book Exchange Point in the Village Hall is very popular with books being exchanged daily. Bring in a paperback you have read, browse the books on the trolley, and exchange your book for another one. This is a community initiative at no cost. The village hall is open daily. We do not need any more books, so please only exchange the same amount of books that you come in with.

Missing a Coat?

There are a number of winter coats, gloves and scarves left in the Village Hall. If you have visited the hall in the last six months, please check your wardrobe as you may be missing an item or two! Thank you, Hopton Village Hall Management Trust.

Can You Help?

Volunteers needed to help with the Speed Advisory Camera (SAM2). It takes just 15 minutes once every 4 weeks to change the SAM2 camera locations in the village. Volunteers are also needed to change the battery every week (batteries are charged in the Office at the Village Hall). Full training will be provided.

Please contact Cllr. John Tonks 07956873232 or the Parish Clerk 01502 730768 for more information.

Data collated from the SAM2 will be published in the August edition of Village News.

Dear Parishioner,

Q: “And so where do you see yourself three years from now?” A: “I don't know, I don't have 2020 vision.”

This sharp bit of humour has more than just a ring of truth about it for me. It is a reminder that sooner rather than later I have to face up to the fact that the sands of time are running out and the countdown towards the inevitable has begun. These days one's usefulness is sadly dictated by the dates on a calendar rather than by the many other reasons for doing a job.

The fact is that time flies - especially when you are having fun - and suddenly reality confronts one and realisations occur. When the kind folk in the Benefice sang Happy Birthday to me recently I had to accept that change was more closely staring me in the face than was entirely comfortable and it was demanding from me a response in much the same way that the opening of this letter demands one.

By 2020 I will in fact have moved on beyond my inevitable statutory retirement from Parochial Ministry. So will the Benefice. Hopefully both will be with the guidance and the blessing of God but at this unsettling point of time there seems to be no defined vision for either. However, what is important is that we singly and together seek to know God's will through prayer and discernment and accept and embrace the challenges that the future will bring with it.

The outcome of the recent General Election, marred so traumatically by the three tragedies of the Manchester and London Bridge terrorist attacks and the subsequent Grenfell Tower fire illustrate just how tenuous and uncertain life is and just how uncertain any projections of the future can be.

In the meant ime Psa lm 8 has these words fo r us to ponder :1 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

God bless Britain; Guide her Leaders; Guard her Children and Give her Peace. Amen.*

Sincerely

Hopton in Bloom

Plants are all in thanks to our great group of helpers. The African marigolds look really bright and cheerful and cover up the remains of the daffodil leaves. Once the blue salvias fluff out and the bacopa gets going it should all look lovely. Our team tries to keep the flowers looking lovely all summer long and especially for the Hopton Fete. Thanks to Mary and Maureen for their diligent watering.

A very kind gentleman went up to Mary and gave her a £10 donation for Hopton in Bloom. It is so nice of people to acknowledge the work we do in trying to keep the village looking lovely. Thank you so much to the people who support us, it is very much appreciated.

Fly the red ensign For Merchant Navy Day3 September 2017

www.merchantnavyday.uk

Merchant Navy Day

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day on 3 September has honoured the brave men and women who kept our 'Island Nation' afloat during both World Wars, and celebrated our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK's imports, including much of the food we eat, most of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted!

This year Seafarers UK is campaigning for the Red Ensign - the UK Merchant Navy's official flag - to be flown on Sunday 3rd September on public buildings and landmark flagpoles across the UK. Parish, town, community, city and borough councils are all invited to take part, along with higher-tier local authorities and governments.

There are many locations where the Red Ensign can be freely flown ashore - civic centres, town halls, village greens, churches, sports venues, h is tor ic buildings, tourist attractions, ports, e t c . A l l p a r t i c i p a t i n g organisations will be added to a prestigious 'Roll of Honour' (see below) and promoted via social media.

Last year more than hundreds of local flag-hoisting ceremonies were organised, involving VIPs, civic dignitaries, Merchant Navy veterans, naval cadets, etc. At some locations a message of support from HRH The Earl of Wessex was read out 'to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage and support the future of the often unsung personnel of our Merchant Navy.'

From Cllr. Ian Constable

Dear Residents,

The Parish Council would like to become more accessible to residents.

Although we meet on the second Monday ofevery month in the Village Hall (7pm start), and Julie, Clerk to the Council, works from the Office at the Village Hall Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, we are thinking about re-starting bi-monthly Saturday morning surgeries.

This would enable residents who work during the week to attend a Saturday morning surgery and speak directly to a Councillor about any concerns they have regarding services or problems. Your thoughts on this idea would be much appreciated. The Parish Council will be discussing this again at the 10 July meeting.

Cllr. Ian Constable, Chairman, Hopton on Sea Parish Council.

Report for the Annual Parish Council Meeting held on 8 May 2017

Hopton Relief in Need (HIN) is a charity registered with the Charity Commission. Income is derived from a parcel of agricultural land owned by HIN on Sidegate Road (6.45 acres) that is rented to NCC (and sub-let by them to a farmer). Rental income is £355 per half year paid in arrears.

The Constitution (governing document) was sealed by the Charity Commission on 4 November 1987. This document sets out the running of the scheme.

The objective of the Charity has recently been amended and approved by the Charity Commission. The objective is now “relieving either generally or individually persons or groups in the Parish of Hopton-on-Sea by making grants of money or paying for items, services or facilities as the Charity considers would benefit such individuals or groups”.

This specifically does not include payment of council tax, rates etc. However, the objective is quite wide and donations have been made over the years (all strictly confidentially) to residents who have been victims of crimes, to school age pupils to help with a trip, or to groups in Hopton who help others or provide services to the village. All requests for donations are considered by the Trustees in the strictest confidence and are not for publication. Sometimes the receiver of a donation will wish to thank the charity publicly.

The Trustees made four donations totalling £709.90 during 2016. Balance on the account to year end 31.12.2016 was £2,242.76

Year end Accounts can be viewed at www.charitycommission.gov.uk Enter charity number 206151

There are currently four Trustees. If any resident or organisation would like to apply for financial assistance, please send a letter to the charity at the above address (marking your enve lope confident ia l ) , e -mai l [email protected], or telephone 01502 732235 (Shirley) in confidence.

Home Watch (Neighbourhood Watch)

Home Watch (Neighbourhood Watch) is now really taking off in Potters Drive. Reports of scams, rogue traders and cold callers being received then circulated.

If you are not a member yet, just contact me: Richard Brewer

20 Potters Drive(01502) 732303(07486) 039744

[email protected]

Just speak to your neighbours who may be members to see what comes through.

As for No Cold Calling Zone status, I have had no response from Norfolk Trading Standards yet.

Neighbourhood Watch is a useful way in which communities can work together with the police to prevent, detect and reduce crime and antisocial behaviour. The message for this year's awareness week is Connecting and Protecting Communities, with particular focus on raising awareness of scams.

Scams often target people in vulnerable situations and can come in many forms; emails, letters, telephone calls or in-person visits where rogue traders make false claims to con the victim out of money.

The national Neighbourhood Watch Network is working with the National Trading Standards Scams Team and, as part of the week, is encouraging its members to join F r i e n d s A g a i n s t S c a m s t o e n a b l e communities to talk about and understand scams, and to take a stand against them.

Alan Osborne, Community Safety Manager at Suffolk Police, said: "Scams often prey on the elderly and vulnerable, which can leave victims feeling more socially isolated as many choose against reporting them to their loved ones or to the police.

"We can all play a part in protecting ourselves, our fami l ies, f r iends and neighbours from falling victim to scams by raising awareness of them and how they work to defraud people.

"Being part of a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme builds a stronger community spirit and by knowing your neighbours, anyone suspicious becomes more much obvious. By working together, we can continue to keep Suffolk a safe place to live and work.”

Hopton W.I.

We met for our June Meeting at Ritson Lodge. President Di welcomed members and advised of apologies. Our annual outing was discussed and members asked for their views. Proposal that we support Gorleston Pavillion theatre summer show matinee was suggested and welcomed. Di to proceed with this option for July and also an August Garden Party was another suggestion.

Di welcomed our Speaker for this meeting Les Jackson from the Lowestoft British Legion organisation. Although members were aware of the Poppy /Remembrance services etc. many did not realise the extent of services offered to ex-services personnel and their families. Accompanied by slides Les gave a fascinating talk to reveal exactly what this charity does and especially the wonderful support given by the Lowestoft Drop in Centre at Regent Road which is open Monday Wednesday and Fridays 11 - 4. The criteria is that any ex-service personnel and their families can access this vast array of help available be it housing, benefits, pensions, dementia care, injury centres, blast injury centres, family holidays, hearing loss and the comradeship often necessary.

Les gave examples of how ex soldiers can sometimes lose their way after being in the close "bubble" of these organisations and how they can receive the help needed to cope with life on the outside. Help can be almost immediate as there is a 24 hr. emergency helpline available for branches to contact to enable rapid processing to access expert help. The invaluable support by Royal Princes William and Harry was mentioned as they truly understand what some of these service personnel have experienced. Members saw a film showing some of the sad stories and experiences of personnel and their families and how their lives were made so much better by the help and support given. The Legion are always grateful for support and anyone is welcome to join their clubs. Ex service personnel get free membership and for others it is £17.50 a year. The Legion always welcome volunteers to help with their fund raising. Di thanked Les for such an interesting talk. Tea followed by Raffle and competition - winners this month were military item Pam Newark Miller and flower Val. Our next meeting is at Ritson Lodge Friday 14 July 2 pm and the theme will be "Music".

Competition: Flower of the month and "My favourite CD". Mary Baker Secretary 01502 731435

Poem by Lyn

Teenage years are special years,Packed full with hopes and dreams and fears,With loves first kiss and friendships new,There's lots to learn and lots to do. From babe to woman you have grown,The seed of destiny has been sown, You'll need some help and guidance too,And I'll be here, always, for you.You may not think I know the score,When pain comes knocking at your door,When your first love has let you down,Don't hide your tears behind a frown.Take my hand and talk to me,By sharing things, you can be free,For all the things I say and do,I was sixteen,And just like you.

The Friends of old St. Margaret's

Last month on a fine Sunday morning ten of our volunteers descended on the Millennium Garden to carry out planting of the summer bedding and other tasks.

This year we have planted a red, white, and blue colour scheme of Sa lv ias and Pelargoniums in the boat. The small bed inside the ruins has been planted with English Lavender and Rosemary. While we were on site the rose bed and island bed was weeded and edged.

The hedge along the Coast Road was cleared of undergrowth and given a trim. A large quantity of ivy branches were also removed near the rose bed.

Look Beyond the Uniform

Anglian Water is urging people to take extra care to make sure they're protected from bogus callers. The advice comes as the longer, warmer summer evenings mean the number of attempted break-ins to business locations, like Anglian Water sites, generally increases. The water company works hard to prevent these intruders, thefts and invest in tighter security but they are still targets for crime. Recently Anglian Water branded clothing was stolen, hence the need for extra vigilance. The water company is asking local communities to be vigilant and carefully inspect ID cards of any doorstep callers. Sarah D o b s o n f ro m A n g l i a n Wa t e r s a i d : “Unfortunately we hear of cases of people targeting vulnerable or elderly customers. Criminals know Anglian Water staff are often t r u s t e d b y h o m e o w n e r s a n d l o c a l communities and need access to people's homes. Sometimes they impersonate genuine Anglian Water employees, but there are usually some tell-tale signs that something isn't quite right, such as arriving with no Anglian Water van in sight, hurrying you or being aggressive.

“We want all of our customers to feel safe in their own home which is why it's important they know what to expect from a real Anglian Water employee. Even if you don't think you are at risk of such a crime, please help share this message with a friend, relative or neighbour who might be more vulnerable.”

Top tips for staying safe

A genuine Anglian Water member of staff will always carry an ID card.

If you are unsure of a person's identity alert the police or call 0800 145 145. Our call centre team will be able to describe the person to you and confirm they are a genuine employee.

Most Anglian Water staff will arrive in Anglian Water branded vans.

Anglian Water staff would never force their way into someone's home.

“From time to time we do make unplanned visits to customers, to take water samples and carry out other checks. However, they will always be willing to wait and let you confirm they are who they say they are. We would never force our way into a person's home.

“All of our employees carry identification and will happily hand it to you while you check it. Calling our Freephone number 0800 145145 at any time of day will put you through to a member of our team who'll be able to describe the person to you and confirm they are a genuine employee.

“If in any doubt we urge customers to check with us and not be pressured into letting someone into their home.”

Customers in any doubt should close the door and phone Anglian Water, for free, on 0800 145145 or alert the police.

Photography competition launched to capture the sounds of Suffolk

Take a moment to imagine if you couldn't hear the birds singing, your friends talking in the pub, or your favourite song playing on the radio. This is reality for many people who experience hearing loss and a major new photographic competition is being launched by one of Suffolk's best-known businesses to raise awareness about the importance of hearing.

Titled 'Sounds of Suffolk' the competition is being launched as part of Deaf Awareness Week, a national initiative also aimed at h i g h l i g h t i n g h e a r i n g i m p a i r m e n t .Award-winning hearing care specialist, The Hearing Care Centre, based at Rosedale GP Surgery in Carlton Colville, is inviting amateur and professional photographers alike from across the county to enter the competition with pictures which demonstrate the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our beautiful county and may not otherwise be heard by those with hearing loss. “It could be the sea crashing against the shore at Southwold, birds singing at Minsmere, the bells chiming at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral or screaming thrill seekers on a ride at Pleasurewood Hills” says Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre. “In fact any picture which depicts the sounds of the county in a powerful way,” she says.

“People with good hearing often don't realise the impact even mild hearing loss has on the enjoyment of ordinary things around us – we want our competition and the campaign to draw attention to some of the sounds that hard-of-hearing people cannot hear.”

Karen explained: “It can take years for some people to decide to do something about their hearing loss - it's estimated that there over 119,000 people in Suffolk who experience hearing loss, yet so many have yet to do anything about it. We want to get the message across that they really are missing out on life and CAN do something about it.”The Hearing Care Centre, which has 24 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, is putting up a top prize of £250 for the best picture, followed by £100 for second place and an annual subscription to Suffolk Magazine for third place.

The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th July 2017. For full information about the competition and the entry details, visit

Twinning

Celebration lunch at The Model Village Great Yarmouth

The weekend at the start of the Great Yarmouth Festival of Arts and Music saw our household host four French people from to the Twinning group of Rambouillet. Two of the male members were drummers in the French band. The other two were a young married couple, the husband being the official French photographer. Delightful people, we had so many laughs with my poor French and their slightly better English, lots of sign language and gestures it was a tearful farewell when they left, with promises of a reunion in France next year.

We also went to the various concerts and events put on by the Arts Festival people headed by chairman Hugh Sturzacker. The concert in the Minster at Yarmouth was excellent, the orchestra being a youth orchestra from Norwich with a very high standard. Another event was a ballet at St Georges which too was of an excellent standard, finally we attended a coffee morning at St Georges where a pianist and soprano sang and played to music by Lloyd Webber and other composers. All in all a wonderful week of culture that I had not realised was put on in Great Yarmouth and which I will certainly look out for in future. Thank goodness we offered our home to the twinning association which began it all.
