FROM THE OFFICE
New Gate, New Access!
The new gates may already be in place when this
newsletter is published, but if not they will be soon
after. Expect to have the gates not closed for perhaps
a short time after installation, as everything gets test-
ed and checked out.
All residents will receive a
new way to activate the
entrance gate and it will
replace the “clickers” you
now have. The deposit on
your clickers will be ap-
plied directly to the new
system, so no refunds will
be made. The clickers are
of no value to the Park so
feel free to dispose of
them yourself. Do NOT
return the clickers to the Office, please!
The new system for proving your right to enter the
Park includes a card in a holder that can be attached
to the inside of your vehicle’s windshield. You will
receive one card for each clicker you have. These
will be distributed soon, along with instructions of
where to place the card and holder. You may also
keep the card in your wallet or elsewhere and simply
display it at the gate for entry.
You will also have a four-digit code that will operate
the gate. Those who were giv-
en a green sheet were given the
opportunity to provide their
own four-digit code since for
those there was no phone num-
ber on file or listed in the di-
rectory. All others will be as-
signed a code which is the last
four digits of your phone num-
ber on file.
With the new system, if you
have a guest arrive at the gate
simply give them your own
four-digit code for access. Also, anyone who arrives
at the gate can call you and you can press 9 on
YOUR phone to open the gate. That must be done
using the phone from which those last four digits
were taken for your code.
There have been problems with loose dogs in the Park lately. Please make sure you have
your dog on a leash AT ALL TIMES. If you aren’t willing to keep your dog on a leash
perhaps you should not have a dog.
This is what the new card/holder looks like.
Open House A Success!
The Open House event held by Royal Palm on June
17th was a rousing success, according to Linda Mil-
ler, Manager. She said that approximately 40 people
showed up to look through the houses for sale and
that two of them sold that day and another is pend-
ing! That’s good news for us all.
Linda said she decided to do the Open House be-
cause the gates were wide open anyway, and she de-
cided to take aDvantage of the opportunity. (She
would much rather have the Park locked up,
though.) Homes have been selling well in Royal
Palms with or without an Open House.

Open House event.

ROYAL PALM SPOTLIGHT
Her smile precedes her into a room, and she makes
everyone feel welcome. Peg Glidden is one of the
first people many newcomers meet after mov-
ing in because she likes to make new folks
feel welcome. And she will twist your arm to
get you to join one of the game activities (or
more!) that are so popular here in Royal Palm.
Right now she presses everyone she meets to
get them to come play bridge on Wednesdays
at noon, they need players!
Though born in Illinois, Peggy grew up in
southern California, in Pasadena and Altade-
na. Her father was one of the three who start-
ed the Gold Bond Stamp company in 1938.
Remember S&H Green Stamps? Those and
Gold Bond Stamps were used in those days as
customer incentives to get return business.
She remembers spending a lot of time in the
early redemption centers, fulfilling redemptions. Peg-
gy’s first husband worked for the company and to-
gether they moved around the country a lot as he took
on new jobs with the
company. She said that
during one 38 year period
of their marriage they
moved 39 times! And
they had two houses they
never moved into—he
got transferred before
they could move in. They
had one house in Mesa
that Peg had even gone to
and pulled weeds in prep-
aration for moving in;
their household items
were in a moving van and she had to tell them to de-
liver to Kansas City instead of Mesa! And even with
that, they did spend five years at one address.
During that time they returned to Medford OR sever-
al times, and one daughter lives there today. Peg also
has a daughter living in the Atlanta GA area and a
son living in Verrado in the West Valley.
Growing up in Pasadena meant lots of focus on the
Rose Bowl and the Parade each year. Her father’s
offices were right along the street where the parade
passed, so the family got excellent front-row seats for
parade-watching.
And here in the Phoenix area Peg has lived
in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Sun City,
and in Phoenix itself. She has lived here in
Royal Palm for about twelve years, and en-
joys it very much. This is the best place she
has ever lived, she says, because it has so
much of a family feeling. She really likes
our community.
Before moving to Royal Palm she and her
husband lived in a house and then in a fifth-
wheel here in Phoenix. Unfortunately, the
fifth-wheel trailer was too heavy for their
truck to pull so it stayed in the park where
they bought it down near Camelback Ave-
nue. But they would drive around, looking for another
place to live, and were always drawn back to Royal
Palm because she loved the idea of living among all
the tall palm trees.
Her first place in Royal Palm was on B Street, but
then she moved out for a
time. When she decided
to return she came into
the Park often, driving
around to see what was
available. She spotted the
house she currently lives
in and it was for sale, but
because it was being sold
furnished she did not
think she could afford it.
But Fran Hedrick, a
neighbor, convinced her
to look into it further and
she was able to swing the deal. John Koch joined with
her five years ago, and they continue to live in her
house on A Street.
A measure of Peggy’s attitude can be summed up in
something she said: “Living here I feel like I’m part
of “family”, I just hope others can see the Lord in
me.”

Bicycles continue to be attractive to thieves, even
here in Royal Palm. For your own protection you are
encouraged to keep your bikes locked when not in
use.
More “50/50” Sharing At Social Club
Events?
There have been fewer events this year that raise
funds to support the Social Club, so the question was
raised at the Social Club meeting on June 17th
whether residents would like to have “50/50” sharing
at all or most Club activities. The response was an
overwhelming “YES”.
Phyllis Pawlak has volunteered to organize this activ-
ity, and will be seeking others to help with the events.
The exact nature of how each event would operate
has yet to be determined, but raffle tickets will be
sold and the proceeds will (probably) be split with
50% going to the Social Club and 50% being split
among one or more raffle winners.
Watch for more details in future newsletters and lis-
ten for announcements at future Social Club events.
And don’t forget to bring extra $$$ to future events
to be able to purchase raffle tickets!
Chris Filling In On Directories
Chris Nugent, L277, (708) 516-5247, will be filling
in for Cheryl Ringer during July and August on han-
dling directory changes and updates. Please contact
Chris for any changes.
Thanks To Walgreen’s
Kevin, manager at the Walgreen’s at 35th Ave and
Dunlap, has graCiously offered to donate items to be
used at the raffle on the July 4th event. Many thanks
to Kevin! And thank him as well for advertising in
this newsletter.

TECH TIDBITS
How To Enlarge Your Screen
(Windows)
Are text and images on your PC computer screen too
small to see comfortably? Simply hold down the
Control key (Ctrl) and scroll the wheel on your
mouse away from you. That will make everything
larger. To make it smaller scroll the mouse wheel to-
ward you. Don’t have a wheel on your mouse? Hold
down the Control key and press the + key to make
thiNgs larger, the - key to make things smaller.
Want To Avoid Having To Login In Win-
dows 10?
If every time you start your Windows computer or
when you return from it being in a sleep mode you
are forced to sign in and you don’t want to have to do
this, simply follow these instructions.
Right-click your mouse on the Start button at the
lower left of the task bar and select Run. You will see
a dialog box like this:
Type netplwiz as shown, then click OK.
You will then see a dialog like the following:
Select the user for whom you want to cancel logging
in, then uncheck the checkbox beside “Users must
enter a user name and password to use this comput-
er”, then click OK. You will then see a dialog that
asks you to enter your password twice. Do this and
click OK.
You will have to shut down your computer for this
change to take effect. When you restart you will be
automatically logged in.
You need to be aware that doing this allows anyone
who has access to your computer to be able to start it
and access any of your programs and files, so don’t
do this if you have that concern.

SENIOR RESOURCES
about 1993, though. The report also included names
of neighbors at those addresses, including many who
were not there when I was. Also listed were business-
es I used to own, including their current incorporation
status. And properties owned were included along
with mortgage data and real estate transactions. All of
my social accounts were shown, such as Facebook,
Twitter, and even Amazon Wishlist; there were some
listed there I have no idea about! They listed people
who were also associated with those business ad-
dresses even though it was not at the time I was there
and even though I had no idea who they are. But they
missed the names of people from whom I leased the
business properties; strange.
One thing that came up right away was that they did
not have my current address, so I went to my Credit-
Karma.com account and updated that. I will follow
through with the credit reporting agencies as well.
I also noticed that there were some reports for a dif-
ferent David Violette—in fact several. I’ll have to
clean those up in time.
I next did a Google search on my name. This showed
many listings, none of which were mine; there used
to be several for me when I was more active. A
search at Whitepages.com brought up 64 results on
the name David Violette, one of which was me.
I will have a lot of followup work to do the clean up
some of those results.
Is it worth it the pay for that information? Maybe.
While Truthfinder is not a credit-reporting agency,
businesses might use it or a similar site to do back-
ground checks on you and the results might affect
how much you pay for somEthing or might cause you
to be turned down for something. So I suppose it
might be worthwhile to check at least once just to see
what might be there, especially if something shows
up that is detrimental and needs correction.
A word of caution, though; if you sign up for one of
these services, be sure to cancel before the end of
your initial period. Otherwise they can continue
charging your credit card month after month!
What’s In Your Public Profile?
Have you ever Googled yourself? For this story in-
stead of writing in reporter mode Ye Editor will
switch to personal mode to tell you some examples
of what you might find out from personal experi-
ence.
This got triggered by info at a web site I happened
onto suggesting use of Truthfinder.com to get a re-
port of what is publicly known about you. I went
ahead and tried it out. Truthfinder starts by asking
some info about you such as name and so on. After
a search of about 5-7 minutes it replied that it had a
report ready for me. Up to that point there was no
charge, but to actually rEad and save the report I
had to sign up. The exact price depends on which
membership package you buy. You can purchase
unlimited people reports for a period of one or three
months. Once that billing period is over, your plan
will automatically renew unless you cancel your
membership. I went ahead and paid.
The report seems quite thorough, giving me info
about my own history and giving me an opportunity
to get reports on friends and relatives as well during
the period I had paid for.
What info do they gather and whEre do they get it?
“TruthFinder is a people search engine that com-
piles public records from a constantly expanding
base of data sources. Look up someone you know,
and you might find arrest records, criminal convic-
tions, driving-related offenses, addresses, phone
numbers, birth dates, information from social media
profiles, and even a list of nearby sex offenders.” I
recognized some entries as being on one or more of
my credit reporting agency reports, so I know they
look at those.
They reported on jobs I have held, but did not go
back more than about five years or so. They report-
ed on other people that may have been associated
with me in a residence or business. This included
people who had lived at some of my previous ad-
dresses, even though I had no idea who they were.
They reported previous addresses I have had but not
my current address. The oldest address was from

ROYAL PALM WOMEN ON THE GO
Women On The Go
Women on the Go is an informal group of women
residents in Royal Palm who go out to lunch together
just to have fun. A diffErent member is designated as
Hostess for each time and gets to choose the place.
The Hostesses for June were Elaine Violette and
Mary McDougale, who sadly could not participate
due to her broken bones. The group went back to The
Horny Toad in Cave Creek again, it having been so
popular the first time.

activities or to volunteer to Hostess a future outing.

Sharing the Shortcake
The Horny Toad restaurant has earned numerous
awards for their made-from-scratch Fried Chicken
and homemade secret BBQ sauce, and several or-
dered that. Their Strawberry Shortcake was awarded
Best Dessert by New Times Magazine and you can
see the result in the photo at right. That one was
shared by five at the table. The HorNy Toad restau-
rant is the oldest, original restaurant in Cave Creek
and has been the location for many "Old West" mov-
ies and photo shoots, so it is an interesting place to
visit.

A CHALLENGING GAME - - HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT SEARCHING?

This game involves searching through this newsletter and finding the letters in the articles (not the ads) where a single uppercase

subsCribe (but this one does not count). Collect as many such letters as there as spaces in the entry form below then unscramble
the letters to form a phrase and write the unscrambled phrase in the spaces.
If you don’t want to tear your newsletter there are copies of this entry form at the office and Card Room

ROYAL PALM BLOCK WATCH
YOU Are Block Watch!
While we have a group of residents who patrol as
part of Block Watch, that is not the only aspect of
Block Watch in Royal Palm. Everyone in Royal Palm
is part of Block Watch! Some of us display Block
Watch signs at our homes that let strangers know that
they are being watched. But we should all be on the
lookout for suspicious activity such as strangers on
foot, on bicycle, or in vehicles cruising Royal Palm at
any time and especially during the evening or night
hours.
Block Watch Volunteers Needed
We need at least one more Block Watcher volunteer
for patrol duties. Contact one of the Block Watch
Captains, or George Immerso for more info about
patrol duties or to volunteer. A golf cart is available
for use if a volunteer does not have one.
Do Not Call Block Watch About
Coyotes
Block Watch can do nothing about the coyotes in the
Park. Calling Block Watch for this only makes their
job harder aNd adds to what they must deal with.
Call the Office and register a complaint if you must.
Don’t Call Block Watch!
If you see someone or something that looks out of
place, do not approach them, do not call a Block
Watch member, do not call the Office—CALL THE
POLICE! Block Watch is out there to be our eyes
and ears only, not to become involved with a poten-
tial miscreant.
CALL THE POLICE!!
Call 9-1-1 first if an emergency.
Call Crime Stoppers (602) 262-6151 for non-
emergency crime reporting
If the police are not involved then there is no official
record of the event.

Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child I thought “Nap Time” was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation.

The sight of my mother cleaning her dentures fascinated my young son. He sat riveted as she carefully took them out, brushed and rinsed them, and then popped them back in. “Cool, Grand-ma!” he said. “Now take off your arm.”
