Of an estimated 5 million species of fungi on earth about over 600 have been documented to cause human mycoses. The Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections (GAFFI) estimates that over 300 million people of all ages suffer from a serious fungal infection every year.

WHO has recently incriminated subcutaneous fungal infections; mycetoma and chromoblastomyoses among the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The need for intricate understanding of the diverse, bizarre fungal pathogens has now become paramount to mitigate invasive fungal infections (IFIs). Serious fungal infections occur concurrent to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), haematological malignancies, chemotherapy, solid organ transplantation and prolonged corticosteroid therapies. The proposed workshop envisages heightening the awareness, and technical acumen of clinical and scientific communities towards diagnosis of fungal infections.

The objectives of this workshop will be imparted by lectures, interesting case discussions, quizzes, slide seminar and laboratory demonstrations on topics such as:

Choice of specimen, collection, processing of clinical specimens and algorithms for lab diagnosis

Conventional and automated methods for fungal infections

Conidiogenesis and identification of filamentous fungi

Taxonomical updates on medically important fungi

Global overview of epidemiology of fungal Infections with a special focus on current scenario in South East Asia

Approaches for serodiagnosis of fungal infections

Evolving molecular methods in mycology and extraction of fungal genomic DNA

Updates on guidelines for management of invasive fungal infection and understanding the anti-fungal susceptibility protocols

Preservation techniques for fungal isolates and avenues for identification from reference labs
