TRAVEL AND YOGA- HANSAJI JAYADEVA YOGENDRA

ravel is a double-edged sword - while it may bring us to a place of Trelaxation and much deserved peace and quiet, the way there can be stressful, be it travel within a busy city, in a cramped bus or

sitting for hours on a train or plane. There is much stress when dealing with airport security, immigration procedures and long lines even for the bathroom. And upon reaching one's destination, exploring a new place can have its stressors too. In short: Travel can bring many disruptions to our peace of mind and body. This is where yoga can bring immense benefits.

These are tried and tested, as in olden times, Yogis would travel from one place to another frequently, sometimes throughout the country. They believed that travelling helps the mind be more open and receptive as we gain knowledge of the diversity in our environment. Travelling was also a means of absorbing nature, receiving strength from the undiluted and the Sattvik forms of nature that prevailed. Yogis knew that the entire approach to life expands while travelling, and sitting with oneself helps one become more self-aware. That is why they would sit and meditate in order to see the reflection of the world within themselves. In fact, it was widely believed that to know oneself means to know the entire universe as the entire universe as we see it outside of us is also present within us.

Given our largely polluted atmosphere and fast-paced life today, getting out from time to time and into a healthier, cleaner and quieter environment is important for relaxation and rejuvenation of our body systems and our mind and overall good health: The cells receive more oxygen, the lungs clear up, our metabolism is balanced and our thinking becomes more positive.

However, travel itself may be the reason for physical and mental stress for many of us, especially frequent travel or the daily commute. We are exposed to air and noise pollution and there is a risk of air-borne infections and even unexpected situations like theft or accidents. Our best protection is always with us: An alert and free mind will be proactive rather than reactive in the face of adversity. Hence, one should keep one’s eyes and mind open when outdoors to ensure safety at all times.

Though rather difficult in a place like Mumbai, in public transport, avoid physically touching people as much as possible. There should be absolutely no breathing through the mouth as the air does not get filtered on its way to the lungs. Applying some natural oils or fragrances will be appreciated not only by you but also by those around you. Upon returning home, a bath and doing jalneti will help cleanse the body and replenish one’s energy. In addition, ensure that your hands and feet are warm and sit calmly in a meditative posture for some time.

Then, eat an early and light dinner, latest by 7 pm, comprising of nourishing food like soup, daal and cooked vegetables with rice or roti.

Avoid raw vegetables or salads during monsoon. Go to bed early and sleep sufficiently to recover well from the exhausting journey.

The creation of a repository of go-to yoga poses for various situations is a must, a user's manual for situational yoga. This especially in scenarios of travelling long-distance, on flights for example. Simple techniques like lifting the legs, bending forward, sideways, twisting and stretching upwards while sitting on the seat can help to exercise core muscles, relieve stress from the neck and back and maintain circulation in the internal organs. Walking as much as possible when off the plane is important to release tension from the body. Mentally, one must have a subject to ponder upon and keep the mind focused.

One also needs to ensure that the body remains well fed and rested. Listen to your body, eat only when hungry and chew your food thoroughly well. Eat mindfully, being aware of quantity and when unsure about the ingredients or the quality of food, eat with restraint. Digestives (mukhwas) like saunf, dhaney ki dal, mint, etc. can be chewed to prevent bloating. In case of international travel, to remain hydrated, drinking warm water sip by sip or fresh lemon juice (without artificial sweeteners) helps prevent jet lag.

To prevent tiredness while travelling, keep your eyes closed and do some alternate nostril breathing, equal breathing and abdominal breathing. Nispandbhava is also one of those beautiful techniques where the sounds that surround us in public places can be used to focus on and keep the mind calm.

Even when we stay alert and equipped with these helpful tips, we must remember that there will always be uncertainty in life and nobody can escape this law of uncertainty. It often fills us with anxiety, tension and worry before and during the travel. The only solution to this is acceptance: When we surrender to reality, we are ready to face all unexpected situations instead of fearing them. Life becomes an adventure and one should be ready and packed for it. This state of mind will make your travel something to look forward to, with enthusiasm.

YOGASATTVA 06

shvar means 'the supreme lord' and Pranidhan means 'complete Isurrender’, surrender of 'I' to the divine power. We think we are the doers when in fact, we are mere instruments in the hands of God. It

is the realisation that God alone is. God who is unlimited, infinite and subtle. Our limited, material-driven minds cannot understand God, whereas knowing God comes from the soul within - God reveals himself as inner joy, inner peace, inner love and wisdom.

For me, the supreme Lord is Meher Baba. He was an Indian spiritual master who said he was the Avatar, God in human form. He gave numerous teachings on the cause and purpose of life, and said that the phenomenal world is an illusion. He taught that the Universe is merely imagination, that God is what really exists, and that each soul is really God passing through this imagination to realize individually his own divinity.

I have been following him since the time I was born. With all my faith now, he is my Rama, he is my Krishna, he is my Shiva and he is my Ganesha.

I believe, and I am very fortunate that I got to observe my mother following complete ishvarapranidhan since childhood. And as they say, you teach children not by instructing them what to do, but to start doing it yourself and then, they will mimic every action of yours.

My mother always told me and my sister to take one courageous step towards what we want in life, keeping him with us and he would take care of the rest of the steps and make sure we excel. My mother never explained to me what surrender to God is, but she made me experience it, which has had an impact on me that stayed with me in both prosperity and diversity.

You thank the lord first in your good times, and remember him in your hard times so not to complain but ask him for his presence, which will give you the strength to face it all. He is your constant companion, whether you realise it or not. This is beautiful and gives you immense power, when you realise it and feel his presence not just during the time that is assigned for regular rituals but during all the general and daily routine activities that you do.

Life is hard and challenging sometimes and we can be so busy feeling cheated, victimized and hurt when life is not the way we want it to be and

we almost miss every new opportunity that life is offering us at the moment.

God knows the end from the beginning; nothing that we go through is new to him. He will always be there to guide you, not so that you can skip or avoid the challenges in your life, but so that you can make it through them and make yourself a better 'You'. I believe that you can only make it through when you completely surrender to the divine.

I desperately need his presence in my life and so I acknowledge him as my father, mother, friend and forever companion. I want to tell him every single day that I cannot do without him and I need him. Believing so much in God often reveals things that need removal in my personal life and that is what has helped me tremendously to let go of things that are not important and to have acceptance towards the facts.

I practise ishvarpranidhan by praying. I believe when you pray, he really hears it all. I have also been angry with Baba and have demanded answers to my questions and solutions to my problems like his child, and each time I have observed that my questions were answered through different mediums and wishes were fulfilled in the best possible way that is meant for me, at the very right time.

Studying and practising yoga for the last 2.5 years, the talks about ishvarpranidhan have helped me understand this topic so much more. My everyday mantra now is 'Give it to God and go to sleep'.

Let God have your life, he can do more with it than you!

What is Astigmatismstigmatism is not an eye disease nor does it mean that you have Aan eye health issue or bad eye. It is simply a “Refractive error.” Refraction is a bending of light as it passes through one object

to another. Vision occurs when light rays are bend as they pass through cornea and lens. This occurs when your cornea is curved too much or your eye is longer than normal. In this condition, the eye fails to focus the light equally on the retina leading to blurred or distorted vision.

Astigmatism symptoms

Astigmatism usually causes vision to be:

• blurred or distorted at all distances

• distress

• headache

• squinting

• eye strain

• difficulty driving at night

• eye irritation

• double vision

What causes astigmatism?Astigmatism happens when the cornea and lens has an irregular or curved shaped instead of round like a ball, and because of two different curves the light rays will focus on two different points on the retina instead of one and this causes blurry vision and sometimes double vision if the astigmatism is severe.

3 types of astigmatism

• Myopic astigmatism

• Hyperopic astigmatism

• Mixed astigmatism:

How to Cure Astigmatism?A cure for astigmatism means to fix astigmatism without glasses. So can you fix and cure astigmatism without glasses? Of course, you can because glasses only make it worse.

So, to improve astigmatism naturally you have to treat the root causes in three areas of your life:

Astigmatism and Yoga:

Trataka and eye exercises can cure astigmatism.

Trataka: The Concentrated gaze

YOGASATTVA 07

Trataka is a practice where the gaze is fixed on an object for some time and then that object is visualized clearly with the eyes closed, as an inner image at the eyebrow center. Trataka has several benefits, which would be helpful to everyone. It improves concentrative powers and mental resolve.

Trataka is practiced by following:

• Candle gazing

• Sun (Surya) gazing

• Moon (Chandra) gazing

• Star (Tara) gazing

• Planet (Graha) gazing

Dynamic Trataka: Sit or stand near a window, comfortably erect and without leaning or taking support from anything. Stare into the distance at a far away object for a few seconds and bring your focus to a nearby object. Then keep alternating the focus from far to near objects for a couple of time.

Below are some of the exercises you can do at home to treat astigmatism:

Exercise 1. Eye Yoga: strengthens eye muscles, sharpens focus and improves vision.

Exercise 2. Rectus muscle relaxation: relaxes the rectus muscles.

Exercise 3. Eye Massage: restores the shape of the cornea.

Exercise 4. Reading: helps to release the strain and pressure caused by astigmatism.

Exercise 5. Vision Breaks: relieves eye pressure and strain.

Exercise 6. Head Tilting: helps the extra ocular muscles to regulate the force they exert on the eyeball.

Astigmatism is curable. Proper guidance is the key. Yogic techniques provides answers to most of the issues and causes of Astigmatism.

Amit Motwani is a survivor. In the most literal sense of the word. He is a flight steward with 15 years of experience whose body, mind and life got shattered on the morning of March 22, 2016. This was the day of three horrific suicide bombings, two of which occurred at Brussels airport, Amit’s stopover destination. At 7:58 am that fateful morning, one explosion happened only 14 feet away from him, and left Amit bleeding from his head, nose and mouth. Though multiple surgeries repaired his body, he was still bedridden upon returning to Mumbai and to make matters worse, his father, who could not take the stress of seeing his son in this condition, collapsed and died soon after. To say that Amit’s life had come apart at the seams would be a gross understatement. Where does one go from there? Among other avenues, Amit found his way to yoga, completing his 3 Months-TTC in January 2019.

Q: What was your mental, emotional and physical state when you came to the Yoga Institute?

A: There were lots of fluctuations, lots of spikes of up and down. I had to manage that. Physically, I used to do yoga a few years back, before the accident. Then, I did sarvang asana very comfortably, which now I couldn’t do any more. I had certain restrictions in terms of bending and holding poses because of my eye. I used to do all asanas very slowly; I took it easy, accepting the fact that I cannot force myself. The mind-body-connection was very important for me, the balance and alignment.

Q: Was there anything in particular that helped you when doing the TTC?

A: All asanas helped; before doing the TTC, that was my mindset because asanas were the only part I was exposed to. Otherwise, I was interested in most subjects; they all played their part. It is a very good course and I

would highly recommend it. I found it to be very, very useful, my condition really improved. When I used to come to this place, I really loved the aura and the ambience; you really don’t feel like you are in Mumbai. I was here for a purpose - I was learning, understanding. Training myself and learning to become a better person.

Q: Any techniques that you do on a regular basis now?

A: I do my yoga practice every alternate day because I have a gym routine too. Techniques like introspection and nispanda bhava really helped, also staying away from negativity, surrendering yourself and accepting whatever has happened. That was important for me, to accept what happened to me, the three years I lost and getting away from why it happened towards trusting in a plan, a higher reality.

Q: What was the biggest change?

A: The little things really; coming to the Institute and having Sattvik food at regular timings. For me, that was all new after 15 years in the service of an airline where schedules are erratic and indulging and overindulging is almost encouraged. Sticking to a routine was very challenging! I also noticed that my sleep patterns changed and that the quality of my sleep has really improved.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: It is your mind and your belief, so it is up to you to change your mindset. If you don’t value certain things, then it is your problem. It is up to each of us to keep learning and to find our own balance.

THE DIVINE AND THEDEMONICAL QUALITIES

YOGICINSIGHTS

YOGASATTVA 31

hat may appear ordinary and simple, acquires greater Wsignificance when set in contrast to complicated and meaningless objects around. Simple qualities like purity,

understanding, humility, etc. may appear colourless to men of the world, but when contrasted to wicked and dehumanizing qualities in evidence all around us, the simple virtues are few: to be fearless, to possess discipline, to be given to self study and to acquire knowledge thereof, to enjoy mental purity and peace, etc. But how meaningful and worthwhile they appear when we have a look at the way most of us function under fear, lack of discipline, extrovertism, confusion and disquietude, etc.

Impure men who believe in the sensory world and deny the existence of anything higher give themselves over to sensual pleasures. They are filled with insatiable cravings, they collect unjust possessions and have the wrong means of livelihood. How often do we see ourselves and others acting aggressively as a result of limited understanding? Many believe pleasure to be the sole motive of existence. To satisfy this craving for pleasure, they resort to violence. Such men do not believe in the Absolute or in any higher authority. “I am good”, they will say. “I did this and I will do that. I will straighten out those who are opposed to me.” They go on raving like this and all the time, their thoughts also move in the same groove, “I am perfect, I am strong, who is there like me?” Overpowered by ignorance, they actually feel proud of their achievements.

It is not surprising that men who are egoistic ultimately harm the world process, which is interrelated. They achieve their gains through unjust means. Such men remain constantly worried and mentally disturbed. These men are really sick persons dragging others along with them. It is a well-known fact that desires, anger and greed are the doors to hell.

The wise man believes in and lives according to higher laws. He respects the scriptures, he believes in philosophy and follows the ideal. What is enjoyed in these wise writings is to be taken into account when one acts. The past experiences of wiser persons is not for nothing. In the old writings, what is right and what is wrong action has been settled. So that one who prefers to live in a manner as contributes to his highest good, definite assistance and guidance become available. He from these can thus cultivate the simple but really divine qualities and avoid the demonical qualities described earlier.

YOGASATTVA 32

he successful cheat hardly realises that the victim of his Tdeception is none other than himself. Our evil design actually metamorphosises our own inner being, before it affects another

person.

Calling a simple person a fool because he does not know the ways of the world, and because he is incapable of practicing the art of hypocrisy, untruthfulness, dishonesty and cheatin, is a common place criticism. And so often one wonders whether one’s being honest and truthful is the right thing to do, or whether one’s being selfish and immoral is the correct thing.

In fact, this habit of deceiving another creature is seen in its crudest form in men enticing birds and animals while hunting. Trading on the weakness of the others, man invents such traps that innocent creatures fall into. Look at the fish caught in the angler’s rod, or the elephant that has fallen into a pit. However, the art of deception takes on newer hues when man deals with another man. The formation of most of our trade and commerce practice is of this kind. We usually keep big margins of profit in selling things that were acquired at considerably less cost. We need the profits to quench our ever growing needs.

No doubt, the art of deception is getting perfected in modern times “Remember this, that success in life is dependent on acquisition of wealth, which comes from a single-minded devotion to oneself. One who is unselfish needs to be condemned for continuing to live on this earth”. This seems to be the popular sentiment all around, especially against a simpleton – if one were ever detected!

But can anything beat this: when our clever worldly wise man thinks of

deceiving God Himself ?

God is worshipped as Almighty, Great, All-knowing, All-powerful, and yet petty minds scheme up little deceptions to as if deceive God Himself. What about those who visit a temple, or a mosque, or a church, or those

who sing and pray loudly? Do you believe that most of these devotees really get absorbed into God consciousness, or hold their attention long on God?

In fact, men are busy at such moments in other thoughts than of God. How they could gain some advantages through their mock prayer, or how they could make believe sincere devotion when they hold none, are the secular thoughts that are fleeting through their minds most of the time. If this is not the highest form of deception, what else is deception?

There is the story of a man who forms a resolve as he set out from his home, that he will contribute to God one-eighth of whatever he gains that day. The idea was great. But as he proceeded on the way, he came upon a silver coin. Per his resolve, he was committed to pass on a small fraction of this find to God. However, he was so overpowered with the thoughts of his possession, that he felt sad at the thought of parting a fraction of it to God. He thereupon made a decision that he would not give away anything to God. And towards that end, he began thinking. Proceeding a little further, he stopped on the way, looked up to the sky, extended his arms upwards and said, “God, how merciful thou art! You put a silver coin on my way. You are also omniscient and all-knowing. You knew beforehand that I had to give up one eighth of the amount I gain, and so you very wisely placed before me a defective coin, rusted a little on one side and probably a counterfeit. You knew that this coin will fetch one eight less in the market. How cleverly you took away your share before I give it to you. Probably you did not trust me”. Saying this the man went away with the silver with a clear conscience.

One must remember here that the temporary gain earned through deception is lost in the long run. There is no question of deceiving man or God, since in the end, one deceives oneself only. The physical reaction of the action stays, the impression and memories leave a scar on our personality – a personality that we inherited so pure and healthy.

GREENYOGASPHERE

GIFT A LIFEOf all the marvels of the nature, giving birth is considered to be of the supreme kind.

Mothers, hence hold an important place in universe’s creation. We can all have the bliss of becoming mothers! Yes, making a sapling from seed is akin to motherhood…putting seed gently in the womb of the earth and caring for it till it bursts in to a tiny sapling ready to embrace the earth.

How to make a Sapling:

You can make your own sapling by following a simple process

1. Save the seeds from fruits and vegetables that are in season…Mango, Jamun (Indian Black Berry) Tomato, Chilli, Karela (Bitter gourd). Clean and dry them well.

2. For planting, you can use any environmental friendly bags, pot, container, used bottles or get creative with coconut shells.

3. Punch few holes in the planters for aeration and drainage of soil.

4. Put well aerated and rich soil mixed with organic compost.

5. Sprinkle with some water and keep in ventilated place where it can get some sun and warmth.

6. Your sapling will be ready in few days depending on the species.

Benefits:

1. Making a sapling is giving back to nature the same love that it bestows on us.

2. Reducing pollution and environmental hazards by creating more greens.

3. Connecting to all Panchmahabutas, especially Prithvi cultivates stability or sthithi. This helps people with neurological conditions of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s etc.

4. Gardening helps in reduction of stress and alleviates conditions like Cardiac problems, Hypertension, Depression and Anxiety.

5. A fun way to build environmental awareness amongst Young children.

Do it Yourself – Rainy season is one of the best times to grow saplings! Give this method a try now by saving mature fruits and vegetables for seeds, as germination success is highest when seeds are obtained from mature fruits In case you are new to gardening, you can attend Sapling workshop at The Yoga Institute or join for our Tree Plantation Drives. You can also visit the campus to experience the bliss of nature. For more information, follow us on our social media channels.

TESTIMONIALS

“YOGASATTVA 34

Though my introduction to asanas was quite early in childhood, I did not know much about yoga and its philosophy. When I decided to do a TTC, I came with an open mind, not imagining the vast philosophy behind this term "Yoga". It felt like I had found answers to questions from the past 22 years and a direction. I also realised that I had tried to follow some of the yamas, niyamas and other concepts but never had a term to describe them. I'm grateful for teachers and a batch so giving, full of love and joy. Yoga taught me to love selflessly, smile at the hardest of times and practice empathy and compassion. Hansaji’s stories are life lessons that I cherish every day. Yoga is a way of life and has shaped me into the person I am today. My connection with the Institute is profound - a peaceful happy place filled with positive energy - that never fails to put a smile on my face.

I express my profound gratitude to The Yoga Institute for deputing your Yoga teachers on the 5th International Day of Yoga. The Yoga Teacher and his assistance provided the practice of different asanas and the demonstration to explain the benefits of Yoga as an option to help distress the body and the soul in this busy life. It was a very informative session, highly appreciate it.

Congratulations on completing 100 years!

My association with The Yoga Institute goes back to June 2016 when I started my 1 Month TTC. I have always regarded Hansa Ma as my spiritual mother and listening to her lectures in Parisamvad really had a wonderful impact on my mind. I then started my 7 Months TTC in July 2016, a turning point in my life. Daily yoga practice at the Institute completely changed my attitude towards my life; it became positive and optimistic. Previously, it was all about asanas and pranayama but after coming here, I came to know the real essence of yoga as yoga is taught as a way of life. The Institute has also made me understand the importance of our great ancient yogic culture and tradition and it is the best place to practice meditation. Heartiest thanks to Pranee Ma’am and Hrishi Sir for their wonderful management, for being there at every step.

TESTIMONIALS

I have a genuine heartfelt feeling that the Yogendra family and TYI are specially and simply here for the welfare of mankind; a life-school, a phenomenal place. Yoga transcends beyond physical boundaries into the mental and spiritual realm. A place that has introduced me to myself on a path of truth. Yoga is presented in a simple, understandable manner. Not considering anything as unacceptable, love and compassion is the practical power of daily living here. My faith cultivated to greater levels, thereby realizing the importance of duties that turned me positive, full of life. A balanced state of mind is important, between materialism and spirituality. When desires exist, there is no understanding. Speaking minimum, preferably being quite, made me sincere in listening to others. Awareness has increased towards my thoughts, words and deeds. All I can say is without judging, I have humbly received. Here I have learnt a novel way of living life, am really blessed to be at TYI.

“Probably the most beautiful place one could dream of learning yoga. Exquisite setting and facilities and accommodation - it felt like paradise. All the staff (teaching, support, kitchen, and grounds) contribute to a happy and peaceful atmosphere and are always ready to help and make your experience a great one. The course itself changed my life - the personal growth was so much more than I expected or ever could have hoped for.

I hope that helps! I loved it so much

It took almost 9 months before I finally came to the decision to attend a yoga TTC in India. In my long-term journey, I met hundreds of travellers who decided to do this type of course for very different reasons: to challenge themselves, to get a new experience, to become a Yoga teacher, but for me, it was more about getting in-depth knowledge about Indian and Yoga philosophy. I have been recommended several schools all around India, but none of them had what I was looking for. I stopped searching, and at that time, the right school came to me. The Yoga Institute gave me the chance to experience the meaning of spirituality and to be connected with my body, thanks to its highly experienced and passionate teachers. The intensive 3-Month TTC was pretty tough, but a life-changing experience too. Having the opportunity to apply and integrate yogic concepts and practice in my life during my internship at the Institute, the changing is ongoing. I am thankful and grateful for being part of this wonderful family in this moment of my life.

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

The story of the intoxicated one narrated here is like a poser to all “goody-goody” spiritualists-if you are a conformist and a conventionalist you cannot reach very high in spiritual life.

DELUSION can grow on us. False impressions and opinions get compounded, one layer insidiously entering another and strengthening it, till the whole covering becomes too massive to be broken out of. In fact such is the hold of false ideas and opinions that one practically never comes out of them. Large occurrences have resulted from false impressions. Brothers who were close to each other separate out, familistic life gets disrupted. Behind all major catastrophies like war, lie delusion and false knowledge. You just cannot easily eradicate another man’s opinion and belief however false it is.

Behind such an opinion is the “I” and the “Me”. In fact selfishness is the key factor here. The solution apparently lies in selflessness, sacrifice, and acting without desires. Equally important is scrupulous avoidance ofpossessing wealth gained through illegitimate means.
