5 Excellent Reasons to Advertise in Community Newsletter Magazines1. Top of Mind Brand Awareness: Consistent advertising leads to increased sales. Companies maintain and gain

High Readership: 68% female | Even distribution of Millennial, Gen X, and Baby Boomer readers4. AUBURN BAYCOMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

Plans for our first community event scheduled for August 29 are well underway. AHS has ad-

vised us that we are still at the 100 people max with food having to be provided by food trucks. All the supplies for games will have to be sanitized in between groups. I am sure that we will still have a lot of fun. Our large party tent has arrived, and we will be setting it up for the first time that day. If all goes well, we will be hoping to utilize it more during the year for other community events.

Part of learning about new details for this event is that I learned that there are a couple of disc golf courses in the city and am looking forward to getting out and try-ing them.

At our online September 2 meeting, the CA board will be discussing hosting an informal Community Clean-Up, with more details to be posted on our website and social media. The link to join the meeting will be posted on our website and there is a local phone number for you to join by phone. Everyone from the community is welcome to attend.

We have been getting some amazing community in-volvement/engagement after posting the Playground Ambassadors videos. The kids did an amazing job with their assigned playgrounds. I know that they have been shared on our Facebook page and Celina is working with our IT company to get them shared elsewhere. Thank you to the following sponsors who made the gift bags for the kids possible: A&W Auburn Station, Big Pink Chair Realty, Superstore Seton, Auburn Station Co-Op, Boston Pizza Seton, Red Skull Comics, 247 Electric, and Foot-hills Soccer. In addition to our Elected Officials: MP Tom Kmiec, MLA Matt Jones, and Councillor Shane Keating.

Another main complaint I have been seeing online is the fact that many dog owners are not being responsible in picking up their pets’ waste. The fine is $250.00 and leav-ing it on the ground exposes any other pets to any of the bacteria/diseases which can also wash into the drains and back into our rivers. The City has placed various garbage cans along the Blvd/Ave to ensure that there is adequate coverage to be able to dispose of the waste. If they need to be emptied, please call 3-1-1 and let them know of the location needing service.

Just a reminder that the main roads of the Blvd and Ave are both two lanes of traffic, with the right lane being a

“parking lane”, as needed. We have asked the city to ex-tend the lane marking by the lights since many people are driving in the middle of the road once they pass the lane markings or will just randomly change lanes, or turn right from the left lane.

If you are having issues with a neighbour, please note that https://www.communitymediation.ca/ has a free service that you can utilize. We know it can be hard to have a conversation and they can help with the dialogue.

Recently I discovered a food program that is offered by Community Kitchen where you can order a box of mixed seasonal fruits and vegetables. They are delivered to various depots throughout the city. I set up a secondary depot in the community for any new people who want to try out the program. Please see our website and Face-book page for the link to the next order, which is due by noon on September 7, 2020. The form has photos of the recent box as an example.

We have had a rash of thefts from yards around the com-munity. I wanted to repeat the details of the free bike registry that allows people to register various equipment such as stollers, wheelchairs, skateboards, bike trailers, and personal mobility devices, just to name a few. If the equipment is stolen, the registry can help with return-ing it if you report it. Please check out their site, https://bikeindex.org/, for additional information and https://bikecalgary.org/theft/ has additional resources and tips.

The one great thing about our community is the social media presence we have with over 65 groups that relate to almost every interest you might have, from Seniors to Gardeners to Good Food Box. We have been asking for feedback on various community projects. Please re-member we need your input to help us understand what concerns/issues you feel we need to work on.

My favorite quote is “Volunteering is the price you are willing to pay for the community you want to live in”. What does your community look like and have you paid the price to live there? Our next online meeting will be on September 2, 2020, and we look forward to having you there for your input.

Guess which age group is now growing the fastest in Calgary? The seniors’ group. Wow – I did not know that! And the same census (2019) showed us that the number of babies and toddlers declined! I did not know that either!

Historically, we have always thought of Calgary as a young city – but that is no more. “...the city is aging quickly as the number of births appears to have declined – rapidly – while the number of senior citizens has skyrocketed.” (From an article entitled “the greying of Calgary”). From 2016 to 2019, the number of people in the 65 to 74 group swelled by over 23%! This will have a great deal of influence on community services (among other things) sup-plied to us in the present and the future.

Just how many seniors are there in Auburn Bay? 1560, to be exact; of a total of 17,607 people. That is almost 9% of the population! So where are we hiding?

I don’t think it’s a matter of where we are hiding; it is more a matter of we don’t have a common place or reason to get together. I have recently been appointed as the Newsletter Director and want to develop Senior Activities for the Community Association. As such, it is my job to find out what you want to do and supply it. In that regard, I am working with the Program Coordinator of the Residents’ Association. She would also be interested in finding out what seniors in this community want to do. We will be working together – I, as Seniors’ Activities Director, will be helping her with senior activity only, a small part of her job.

We are both severely restricted by COVID-19. For example, Auburn House is not even open at this time. We now have to wear masks if meeting inside. Food cannot be shared. We have to social distance (I call it anti-social dis-tancing). It is particularly difficult to try to start a group doing something together during a pandemic. But, as seniors, we have to be particularly vigilant.

We tried a survey to try to understand your needs better, but got such few responses, we could not properly analyze that data.

So, here’s my idea for us! It is only a temporary thing, but it is better than nothing. I propose that on Tuesday, September 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, we meet in a “party tent” that our Community Association has recently purchased (think large tent with sides, rather than for a party). It will be near the green shed just west of Prince of Peace School on Auburn Bay Avenue. Please bring your own chairs and social distance. The purpose of the meeting will be to meet each other, and begin to talk about what we will eventually be able to do. Please come out to meet me and begin com-municating with each other! I look forward to meeting you.

TAKE ON WELLNESS

by Rosanna D’Agnillo, B.A., M.A. Certified Meditation Instructor and Vocal Teacher

You’re not alone if isolation and the fear of becoming sick is giving you the blues. Deep down, we know it’s

not healthy for us to be alone and fearful. Science backs up our intuition: living under constant stress limits our creative, problem-solving brains to flight-fight-freeze instincts, where every interaction with people is gauged as a threat to safety.

It’s easy to overlook mental self-care when fear of survival is number one. That’s why it’s really im-portant to make manageable, regular commit-ments to mental health. It’s deeply intertwined with physical health. Meditation is one of many tools for mental-self care. It’s free, can be done anywhere, anytime, with no special equipment.

Meditation is sometimes misunderstood. Some people tell me they can’t clear their heads or sit still. They’d rather do exercise to relieve stress, or they don’t think it fixes problems. Meditation is not emptying our minds, forcing ourselves to relax, and pretend everything is okay. Nor is it a planning and strategy session, or a replacement for exercise.

Today, try this short, easy meditation: sit quietly and count ten deep, easy breaths. Notice where your thoughts wander when you lose focus. No-

tice how you feel. Fidgety, overwhelmed, worried, reliving past events? Take two more deep breaths. Relax your belly and shoulders. Notice how good

that feels. Remember that feeling for later. After, start paying attention to how often your mind is occupied

with those thoughts and emotions. That’s a good clue about how much stress you’re under.

Meditation is a physical and mental discipline of si-lent attention to train focus, reach equanimity with our thoughts and emotions, and achieve compas-sion for self and others. Just like with exercise, reg-ular practice delivers the awesome side-effects:

self-control, keeping cool under pressure, sleeping better, and more.

GREAT NEWS MEDIA

RE-OPENING?

let us help you GET THE

WORD OUT.

SAFE & SOUND

Back-to-School SafetyAlberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and students about some road safety tips, as roadways become more congested, with the return of the school year. Pedestrians and motorists both have an important role to play—road safety is a shared responsibility.

Motorists•Avoid talking on cell phones, texting, or any other be-

havior that diverts your attention away from driving;•Give right-of-way to pedestrians who have activated

overhead crossing lights, or who are waiting to cross from a street corner;•Remember, it is illegal to pass vehicles—other than

those that are parked—in school zones or playground zones, during posted hours.

Around school buses•Flashing amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to

stop—motorists should do likewise; •No matter which direction you are coming from, STOP,

when approaching a school bus with activated flash-ing red lights—unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway from you;•Driver courtesy goes a long way. By simply being alert

and cautious when approaching a school bus, you are contributing to school bus safety.

Pedestrians•Cross only at marked crosswalks, or street corners that

have clear visibility from all directions; •Make eye contact with all drivers before crossing the

street, and keep distractions to a minimum;•When activating overhead crossing lights, pause be-

fore stepping off the curb to ensure motorists in both directions have come to a complete stop;•Stay within the crosswalk lines;•Obey pedestrian lights at intersections. Cross the

street only when you see the ‘walk’ sign and only when all cars have come to a complete stop;•If you are with young children or pets, hold your child’s

hand firmly and keep a solid grip on leashes when crossing; •Remember: children learn by observing. By dem-

onstrating safe crossing habits, you can reduce the chances of your child being involved in a preventable auto/pedestrian collision.

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

City Offering Event GrantsWe know Calgarians are looking for ways to safely par-ticipate in arts, culture, sport, and recreation events like they did before the COVID-19 pandemic. So, we are of-fering a Microgrant Program to support public events, in-person or virtual, with grants ranging from $500 to $4500. We hope to support events with the additional costs they now need to cover to meet health and safety guidelines and regulations. Up to $75,000 is available for eligible events.

Calgary’s festival and event community has been hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the cancellation of in-person events from April until August 2020. We want to support our communities which are normally active and vibrant with festivals and events throughout the year with amazing opportunities for citizens and visitors to enjoy Calgary’s community spirit.

On July 3, we began accepting applications for com-munity events as well as drive-in, drive-thru and non-competitive walks and runs on City land that meet provincial and city guidelines and regulations. If you are a non-profit, charitable or Business Improvement Area organization planning a public event on City land, pri-vate property or virtually, please consider applying.

We are accepting applications until November 13 for public events held between July 20 and December 31, 2020 that meet all provincial and city guidelines and regulations.

Research has repeatedly shown cultivating positive rela-tionships with others in our lives to be the single most critical element in contributing to our overall well-being. The benefits of relationships stretch far beyond the warm emotions we experience in cuddling up to our partner or indulging in a glass of wine with friends. In addition to our psychological well-being, relationships have been shown to have direct impacts on our physical and mental health.

Let me share with you some great reasons why you should invest in your relationships:1. Not surprising, marriage is a stronger indicator of hap-

piness than satisfaction with a job or finances.

2. Interpersonal relationships can buffer us from disease and the effects of stressful events by providing us with a variety of social supports.

3. A correlation has been shown between keeping so-cially engaged and putting family first to living longer lives.

4. Relationships and work groups contribute to our well-being by providing us with a sense of meaning.

One way to foster positive relationships is through ex-pressing admiration, appreciation, and affection in our partnerships. Another is through spending quality time together in ways that encourage communication, con-nection, and good old fun!

DOLLARS & SENSE

Free merchandise from Amazon delivered right to your doorstep might sound like a big win. However, Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning consumers that there is a scary downside to this recent scam where phony companies benefit from your delivery jackpot.

How the Scam WorksThe scam is called ‘brushing’, and BBB is receiving re-ports across North America about it. Boxes of unordered merchandise from Amazon will suddenly start arriving at your doorstep. You have no idea who ordered the items for you and there is no return address except that of Amazon. As for the items being delivered, they are also quite varied. In one case reported to BBB Scam Tracker, a humidifier, hand warmer, flashlight, bluetooth speaker, and a computer vacuum cleaner arrived.

Why Would Such Merchandise be Sent to You?The companies sending the items are usually foreign, third-party sellers that are using your address and Amazon information. They want to create the impres-sion that you are a verified purchaser of their products and have written a glowing online review about them. They then use your account information to post a fake, positive review to improve their product ratings, which means more sales for them. The payoff is highly profit-able from their perspective.

Why is this Bad News for You?The fact that someone was able to have the items sent to you as if you purchased them suggests that they have some of your Amazon account information. Cer-tainly, they have your name and address, and possibly, your phone number and a password. Once the informa-

tion is out there, it could be used for numerous crooked enterprises. If your credit card is linked to your Amazon account, they could use it to purchase the products that are delivered to you. In the end, they get the money for the purchase, increased sales numbers, and seemingly all positive reviews.

Then there is the ‘porch pirate’ angle. There are instances where thieves use other people’s mailing addresses and accounts, then watch for the delivery of the package so they can steal it from your door before you get it.

What Can You Do?•Notify Amazon. Brushing and fake reviews are against

Amazon’s policies, so contact Customer Service if this happens to you. They will investigate and take action on the bad actor. Go directly to Amazon’s website to get their contact information. Be cautious while searching for support phone numbers.

•Change your account passwords. This may be a sign that your personal information has been compro-mised. You may want to consider a password manager service to improve account security. Keep a close eye on your credit report and credit card bills.

•You are allowed to keep the merchandise. In Alberta, the Consumer Protection Act says companies cannot require you to pay for unordered goods or services unless you agree in writing to pay. If you don’t agree, you don’t have to pay.

If you have spotted a scam, even if you have not lost any money, report it to BBB.org/ScamTracker. Your report can prevent others from being victimized.

After months of uncertainty and adapting to at-home learning, I am pleased to share that Alberta’s schools will be welcoming students back to classrooms this fall. This decision has been made with the safety of students, teachers, and other staff members being the highest priority. This coming school year, students will be wel-comed back to their classrooms under scenario 1, which allows students to be in the classroom with enhanced health measures. As Alberta’s students prepare to go back, the Minister of Education will continue to work closely with Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Hin-shaw, as well as school boards, to ensure that all schools are prepared to welcome students back.

As students return to the classroom, several new mea-sures are being put in place for their safety. While school may feel a little different at first, these measures will allow a safe, near-normal return to class. Each school will imple-ment public health measures, including frequent clean-ing of surfaces, introducing hand sanitizers to school and classroom entrances, grouping students in cohorts, and adjusting schedules to allow for greater physical distanc-ing. To prepare for these changes, resources are available for parents at alberta.ca/returntoschool.

It has been several months since the COVID-19 pan-demic changed our daily lives, and I know that fatigue with new ways of life is setting in for many. I want to encourage everyone in our community to continue the hard work of practicing physical distancing, frequently washing hands, and staying home when sick. As we continue to work on reopening and recovering from this pandemic, it is essential that we continue to take steps that protect ourselves and our loved ones from spreading COVID-19. For the latest information and re-sources on COVID-19 in Alberta, I encourage you to visit alberta.ca/covid19.

Hello, Ward 12.

I’d like to start off by saying thank you to everyone taking precautions to keep themselves, and their neighbours safe during this difficult time of COVID-19. Although we’ve seen a lot of uncertainty, Calgarians can sure roll with the punches. With September approach-ing, and hopefully some calmer weather, I have a few updates for you all.

Staying Open is in Your HandsAs we head into fall and prepare to go back to school and work, staying open is in your hands. In a recent sur-vey, 99% of Calgarians say that they know what to do to stop the spread of COVID-19; now it’s time to put that knowledge to the test. • Keep 2 meters of distance between yourself and

others.•Ifyoucan’tmaintainasafephysicaldistanceof2me-

ters from others, wear a face covering. •Continuetowashyourhands, especiallybeforeyougo

outside and when you return home. • Ifyouarefeelingunwellstayhometoprotectothers

and limit the spread.

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

About Bobcats:The smallest of Alberta’s wild cats, bobcats are about twice the size of a domestic cat. Bobcats feed mostly on rabbits, hares and other small mammals like mice and squirrels.

Typically wary of people, bobcats have become more habituated to humans in Calgary, resulting in more sightings.

Co-Existing with Bobcats:Bobcats are an important part of Calgary’s ecosystems and the biodiversity of Calgary’s Parks.

It is extremely unlikely that a bobcat will attack a human. These predatory cats feed mostly on rabbits, hares and other small mammals like mice and squirrels.

What to do if You Encounter a Bobcat in Your Area:In the City:Bobcats are opportunistic hunters. Keep cats indoors and supervise small dogs when they are in the yard, as they may be vulnerable.

On Your Property:•Keep cats indoors and supervise small dogs.•Dogs, rabbits or other animals that live outdoors

should be kept in a secure enclosure with a strong roof. •Remove food, shelter or water that may attract them

to your property.•Close off areas under decks and outbuildings. Add mo-

tion detector lighting to walkways and driveways.•If there are no kittens, be sure the bobcat has an es-

cape route – open gates on your property and do not block its exit. The bobcat will leave in its own time.•Trapping and relocating a bobcat several kilometers

away is not an effective method of removing a bobcat from your property. •The best solution is to make your property unattractive

to wildlife. See tips on the back of this sheet.

Who to Call:Call Fish and Wildlife if you are concerned for your own safety or the safety of others: Calgary office (403-297-6423) or the Alberta Report a Poacher line (1-800-642-3800).

Tell The City about your sighting. Wildlife sightings help us make better choices about land management. Con-tact 311.

More Information:For more information on co-existing with bobcats, please visit www.alberta.ca/bobcats.aspx.

How do I prevent bobcats from coming to my property? To prevent conflict with bobcats, remove the food, shel-ter or water that may attract them to your property: •Do not feed wildlife. •Keep your garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids. •Put your garbage and recycling out only on the morn-

ing of collection, not earlier. •Do not leave pet food outdoors. •Remove bird feeders and bird baths so bobcats are not

drawn into your yard to prey on the birds. •Trees, shrubs and even grass should be kept trimmed

so there is no shelter for bobcats to hide in. Spaces under decks and outbuildings should be closed off for the same reason.

•Add motion detector lighting to walkways and driveways. •Dogs, rabbits or other animals that live outdoors

should be kept in a secure enclosure with a strong roof.
