Whether you are a parishioner, a visitor, a Catholic returning to the Church or someone

seeking faith, we hope you find your time among us inviting and welcoming. Please feel free to ask

anyone for assistance.

We welcome Frida McCall Schmidt to the Church as she celebrates the sacrament of baptism. May the seeds of faith grow always stronger in her heart and may our prayers support her parents and godparents in their responsibility of

July 21st, 2019 16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3

As a Religious non-profit corporation in state law, certain aspects of parish life are dictated by civil law. Like other civil corporations in the state of Wisconsin, every parish has a Board of Directors, and the board of directors of each parish corporation must meet at least once annually wherein they confirm the filling of the roles of Trustee-Treasurer and Trustee-Secretary and transact other business. Know that the offices of President and Vice-president are filled ex officio by the diocesan Bishop and the parish pastor. A fifth officer of the corporation is a Vicar General of the Archdiocese as designated by the Archbishop. The annual corporate business meeting for St. Monica will be held on July 28th in between the regular Sunday morning Masses in Donovan Hall. The agenda for this meeting will include prayer, a short Pastor's Report, Trustee Report, and comments from Pastoral Council and Finance Council chairs. An opportunity for Q & A will be offered. All registered parishioners are welcome to attend.

PASTOR’S CORNER Friends, I may not be a civil lawyer, but I know enough to believe an adage from the legal world which asserts that a conspiracy is the hardest crime to keep a secret. And the cover-up of a conspiracy is even harder to keep secret.

Think through the logic – the more people who are involved, the more likely it will be that someone cracks and rats out the others, or someone brags and lets the secret slip. I share this thought as a preface to completely discounting one of the favored legends about Christianity among novelists and conspiracy theorists throughout almost two millennia. Let’s be clear – Mary Magdalene was not the wife of Jesus; she did not father a child (or children) with Jesus; and she was not secretly the real head of the Church instead of St. Peter. Advocates of the conspiracy theory contend that the marriage and family of Jesus were, for an inexplicable reason, kept hidden from the world and never even alluded to in the Scriptures or the writings of early Church Fathers. Furthermore, according to contemporary suspense novels and movies, for two millennia the Church has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep this secret, and to keep iron fisted control on the descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene. While there are plenty of ways to debunk these loopy theories, the simplest is to consider what the priorities and manners of 1st Century Jerusalem would have done. If the one whom you thought to be the Messianic King was executed, either immediately or eventually, the heir to the throne would be brought forth for his own triumphal entry into Jerusalem - or at least to become the universally looked to high priest of this new Christian faith. This never happened, and furthermore there have been no schisms in the Church because of a refusal to reveal the secret. So, the theory doesn’t make sense. I bring all of this up first, to offer a somewhat lighter column during these midsummer days. Second, to take an opportunity to touch on the importance to the Church of St. Mary Magdalene – even if she was not the wife of Jesus. Just three years ago Pope Francis chose to elevate the annual Memorial of St. Mary Magdalene (July 22nd) to the liturgical level of a Feast. This decision reflected long-held theological and evangelical understandings of the saint. According to the

formal decree making the change: “In fact this woman, known as the one who loved Christ and who was greatly loved by Christ, and was called a ‘witness of Divine Mercy’ by Saint Gregory the Great and an ‘apostle of the apostles’ by Saint Thomas Aquinas, can now rightly be taken by the faithful as a model of women’s role in the Church.” The fact that Mary Magdalene was the first to encounter the risen Christ, and followed His instructions to tell the Twelve of the Resurrection, warrants for her the Thomistic title of “Apostle to the Apostles”, and the honor of having a Feast Day of the same precedence and importance of the Apostles in general. But her great lesson to us today is not her role – whether factual or mythical – it is the disposition with which she came to Jesus in the first place. As Catholics we hold that she was the sinful woman who washed and anointed the feet of the Lord and desired only his mercy in her life. Were it such that we, two millennia after Mary Magdalene, made such humility and hope for mercy our first and most fundamental encounter with Christ. Refresh your heart, and your desire for Christ’s mercy by celebrating the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene on July 22nd this year and every year. Blessings to all.

St Monica Parish is actively seeking volunteers that would be willing to serve on the Church Safety Team. Team members, after receiving training, will be asked to support the ushers and other staff or ministers, monitor the church service and respond to incidents as they arise. This could include medical emergencies, providing calm reassurance to parishioners during a crisis situation, and/or calling police. Further, members will monitor doors and the parking lot as a security measure. A short period of training will be provided. It is envisioned to have at least one Church Safety Contact assigned for every Sunday and Holy Day Mass, and other large liturgical services. It is prayerfully hoped that there will never be a need. Persons with professional experience of calm in crises roles are encouraged to assist your parish in this way. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Paul Hartmann, [email protected].
