Helping Hands of Midland 1301 Brinson Lane
(432) 520-8900
We recently received a letter and a check in the mail: Dear Helping Hands, Enclosed is a check for $500. I hope that it will be used to help some people with their utility bills. I have been blessed over the past couple of years even though I was experiencing extreme challenges physically and professionally. As such, it is my wish to help those who don’t have the advantages I’ve been fortunate enough to have. I’m hoping to continue support of Helping Hands of Midland in the future. In speaking with this gentleman, we found he was inspired to send his donation after reading our column in the past of a similar person who had made, just such a donation. I asked this man if we could write about how his donation was spent, and he agreed. We paid the electric bill for a 49-year-old man. His wife had recently passed away and he had used all of his money for her funeral expenses. A 31-year-old mother of 4 children faced the devastation of her husband being deported. While he worked hard and provided well for his family, he was here illegally and, when found, was sent back to Mexico. We paid her electric and gas bill. Please pray for this family. They are facing hard times. A 55-year-old woman needed help with her electric bill because she had used an excessive amount of gasoline driving back and forth to visit a friend of hers who was dying. They had been lifelong friends and she felt she owed it to both of them to be together during this difficult time. Her friend passed away, but she needed a little help paying her electric bill this month. A 92-year-old woman called us in a panic. Her electric bill had soared to $250 during the extreme heat we experienced last month. She was in tears. Her Social Security was only $650 per month and there was no way she could afford to pay that kind of money. A lot of our efforts have been focused on helping those people who are either out of work or suffering from hours being cut due to COVID. We cannot forget that there are still others out there who are not directly affected by the virus, but who also run into financial hardships. We are so blessed to have the assistance of the Abell-Hanger Foundation who has made it possible for us to assist those needing help with utility bills (as they have done for us for so many years now). Thank you Wade, Mark and all of the other very kind people from Abell-Hanger for their continued generosity in letting us be their arms in reaching out to our Midland neighbors in need.
