    airport's busiest day ever

as thousands of specta-tors arrive for the XXXOlympic Games. Thou-sands of athletes arealready in London. Oneof the favourites for goldin the mens 800 meters

in athletics is David Rudisha, who is coached by aCatholic religious brother, Brother Colm O'Connell.Brother OConnell has lived in the Kenya Highlands formore than 35 years, and has trained many top levelathletes in schools run by the Brothers of Saint Patrick. He spoke to Vatican Radio about why he sees athletics

as a tool of evangelization.I had a sports background, but only in general. I didnot have an athletic backgroundat that time Kenyawas still a relatively new country, and there was a lot ofwork being done in trying to promote education, hesaid. I got involved in education, and I also consideredthat sports would be an important part of the life of ayoung person, so I also used my interest, and my abil-ity, to try to help young people to become good insports. He said he sees his work as a missionary activity.Being a Catholic, very often our approach to develop-ment and to our own missionary work is not just about

an academic education only, Brother O'Connell ex-plained. It is about character formation. It is about val-ues in life. It is about behavior, and giving young peo-ple a good foundation. It is a little bit unusual for a mis-sionary to see athletics or sports a missionary en-deavor, but I think sports or any of these activities thatgo on outside the classroom, can even be more effec-tive sometimes than the academic work.

MOVIE REVIEW The Dark Knight Rises By Adam ShawCatholic News ServiceNEW YORK (CNS) -- Paradoxically, sometimes success at the box office can turn out to be a burden for a movie director. Havingcreated one popular picture, Hollywood helmers can find themselves faced with impossible expectations for the sequel.

That problem is especially acute in the case of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy, of which "The Dark Knight Rises" (WarnerBros.) is the final installment. Given that the feature stands in the shadow of 2005's successful reboot of the franchise, "BatmanBegins," as well as 2008's "The Dark Knight" -- a film described by some critics as one of the greatest movies of all time -- the ques-

tion arises: Can the director and co-writer (with his brother, Jonathan Nolan) make lightning strike thrice?

The answer is neither a conclusive yea nor a definitive nay. While this lavish closing chapter will certainly delight the Caped Cru-sader's dedicated fans, more casual viewers may find its 164-minute running time bloated and unwieldy.

Set eight years after "The Dark Knight," the latest adventure finds Batman's alter ego -- billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne (ChristianBale) -- injured, exiled and grief-stricken. The events of the previous film have not only deprived him of the company of his child-hood friend and love interest, Rachel Dawes, they've also made him an enemy in the eyes of the police and the public at large.

The answer is neither a conclusive yea nor a definitive nay. While this lavish closing chapter will certainly delight the Caped Cru-sader's dedicated fans, more casual viewers may find its 164-minute running time bloated and unwieldy.Set eight years after "The Dark Knight," the latest adventure finds Batman's alter ego -- billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne (ChristianBale) -- injured, exiled and grief-stricken. The events of the previous film have not only deprived him of the company of his child-

hood friend and love interest, Rachel Dawes, they've also made him an enemy in the eyes of the police and the public at large.Yet, inevitably, Wayne and his chiropteran persona find themselves pulled out of retirement. Initially, that's due to the arrival on thescene of slippery cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) -- a morally ambiguous character out to pilfer Wayne's jewels and flirtwith him at the same time. But it's the aptly named terrorist mastermind Bane (Tom Hardy) who really forces Batman to don the cowl once more. In the face ofhis criminal onslaught, the cops -- led by jaded commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman) -- fall to pieces, despite the dedicatedefforts of idealistic officer John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).Hardy's Bane, a worthy successor to Heath Ledger's show-stealing Joker in the previous movie, seeks to claim the city of Gothamon behalf of "the people," thus providing a violent fictional twist on the real-life Occupy Wall Street movement.

Although Nolan's visual style favors the bombastic set piece, his screenplay evinces a surprising amount of humanity and emotion.Especially so as it shows us the protagonist's touching relationship with long-serving butler Alfred (Michael Caine) who acted as afather figure to the young lad after Wayne's parents were murdered. These personal touches accompany a message about self-sacrifice that makes more explicit than ever the altruism that has always

characterized Bob Kane and Bill Finger's comic-book creation -- who made his debut on the printed page in 1939. Batman's rejec-tion of anger and revenge -- as well as his refusal to employ unnecessary violence in fighting crime -- are also emphasized. So too,of course, is his desire to do good.Nonetheless, the bone-breaking nature of the mayhem on display excludes the youngest batfans, who would also likely find theirattention spans taxed by the lengthy proceedings. Some parents may, however, deem "The Dark Knight Rises" acceptable fare forolder adolescents. The film contains frequent and intense action violence, including gunplay, an implied nonmarital encounter, a few uses of profanityand some crass terms. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America ratingis PG-13 -- parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago

de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its highpoint a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typi-cally, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through roughterritory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodgingfacilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, theirsongs and prayers. When their journey is documented prop-erly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only ofJames the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human be-ings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, thosewho wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging andhospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign ofa Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highlyprized.

In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed thepilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and dan-ger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn

gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you makeyour summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrim-age: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to achurch, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through lifeshills and valleys.

Do you suppose the authors of the four Gospelswere aware of todays first reading from the second bookof Kings? Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed ahundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to proveGods power. This same miracle, now multiplied by morepeople fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all

four Gospels. In todays passage from John we evenhave the detail that the loaves were barley, remindingevery pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. YetJesus went into hiding when they wanted to make himking. It is the passage from Pauls Letter to the Ephesiansthat gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesuscomes from God. It is not meant merely to feed us, or toprovide one group with a king. There is one Lord, onefaith, one God and Father of all who works through JesusChrist and through us all.
