(Published in the Savage Pacer on Saturday, July 3, 2010; No. 2249) ISD 719 S CHOOL B OARD NEWS Gruver receives good marks The results of Superintendent Sue Ann Gruver’s annual evalu- ation were released at Monday’s School Board meeting, and the board came to a consensus that she has performed her duties “adequately” while acknowledging the difficult budgetary and curriculum issues the district has faced. Board Chairman Tom Anderson read a summary of the results at the June 28 meeting, stating that Gruver “has shown ability to learn and adapt” but that “there are still opportunities for her to grow in her role.” Gruver will not receive a raise this year, due to her own re- quested pay freeze, a response to the district’s tenuous nancial situation. Drug, alcohol sanctions changed Prior Lake High School students who participate in sports and activities will have another reason to “just say no.” That’s because the Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board ap- proved an increase Monday (June 28) in the severity of punish- ment for PLHS student athletes and activity members who get busted drinking alcohol or using drugs. These students, if they get caught just once, will now be forced to sit out for six weeks’ worth of games or events. For each subsequent violation, stu- dents will be suspended from their sports or activities for a full calendar year. Armed with an envelope of 15 student chemical-use violations that occurred June 9-13, Prior Lake High School Activities Direc- tor Eric Rodine presented the plan to the board. He said the origi- nal two-week penalty destroys team unity and a six-week penalty will not have that effect. Rodine said the new policy is one of the strictest in the metro area. The governing high school sports and athletics body, the Minnesota State High School League, currently sets the stan- dards for violations of its chemical-use policy at three strikes. Upon the rst incident, a student is out for two games or two weeks. Strike two means a six-week or six-game suspension, and only upon a third violation would a student miss a full calendar year. The board adopted the proposal by a vote of 5-1 (with Board Member Dee Dee Francis absent). Board Member Eric Pratt dis- sented, saying he felt the program should be a one-year pilot pro- gram. The policy went into effect July 1. Activity fees rise for 2010-11 The Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board has voted to imple- ment a hike in activity fees for the next school year. Activities Director Eric Rodine presented the price increases at the School Board’s June 28 meeting. The smallest increase is $15 for all middle school activities as well as the following high school programs: soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross-country running, cheerleading, baseball, softball, track, knowledge bowl, speech, theater, music and chess. Football, swimming, basketball, cross- country skiing, wrestling, dance and synchronized swimming fees will go up $30. Gymnastic participants will have to pay an additional $55, hockey will now cost another $100, and golfers’ fees will go up $115. Golf, gymnastics and hockey cost more for the district to provide, which is why those fees have steeper increases. Rodine said the higher fees are due to rises in activities ex- penses, and in spite of the hike in fees, the amount will still not completely cover the cost the district incurs in providing the activities. – Compiled by Meryn Fluker Catch up online...... ...... ISD 719 SCHOOL BOARD NEWS

Gruver receives good marksThe results of Superintendent Sue Ann Gruver’s annual evalu-

ation were released at Monday’s School Board meeting, and the board came to a consensus that she has performed her duties “adequately” while acknowledging the diffi cult budgetary and curriculum issues the district has faced.

Board Chairman Tom Anderson read a summary of the results at the June 28 meeting, stating that Gruver “has shown ability to learn and adapt” but that “there are still opportunities for her to grow in her role.”

Gruver will not receive a raise this year, due to her own re-quested pay freeze, a response to the district’s tenuous fi nancial situation.

Drug, alcohol sanctions changedPrior Lake High School students who participate in sports and

activities will have another reason to “just say no.”That’s because the Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board ap-

proved an increase Monday (June 28) in the severity of punish-ment for PLHS student athletes and activity members who get busted drinking alcohol or using drugs. These students, if they get caught just once, will now be forced to sit out for six weeks’ worth of games or events. For each subsequent violation, stu-dents will be suspended from their sports or activities for a full calendar year.

Armed with an envelope of 15 student chemical-use violations that occurred June 9-13, Prior Lake High School Activities Direc-tor Eric Rodine presented the plan to the board. He said the origi-nal two-week penalty destroys team unity and a six-week penalty will not have that effect. Rodine said the new policy is one of the strictest in the metro area.

The governing high school sports and athletics body, the Minnesota State High School League, currently sets the stan-dards for violations of its chemical-use policy at three strikes. Upon the fi rst incident, a student is out for two games or two weeks. Strike two means a six-week or six-game suspension, and only upon a third violation would a student miss a full calendar year.

The board adopted the proposal by a vote of 5-1 (with Board Member Dee Dee Francis absent). Board Member Eric Pratt dis-sented, saying he felt the program should be a one-year pilot pro-gram. The policy went into effect July 1.

Activity fees rise for 2010-11The Prior Lake-Savage Area School Board has voted to imple-

ment a hike in activity fees for the next school year.Activities Director Eric Rodine presented the price increases

at the School Board’s June 28 meeting. The smallest increase is $15 for all middle school activities as well as the following high school programs: soccer, volleyball, tennis, cross-country running, cheerleading, baseball, softball, track, knowledge bowl, speech, theater, music and chess. Football, swimming, basketball, cross-country skiing, wrestling, dance and synchronized swimming fees will go up $30.

Gymnastic participants will have to pay an additional $55, hockey will now cost another $100, and golfers’ fees will go up $115. Golf, gymnastics and hockey cost more for the district to provide, which is why those fees have steeper increases.

Rodine said the higher fees are due to rises in activities ex-penses, and in spite of the hike in fees, the amount will still not completely cover the cost the district incurs in providing the activities.
