Blessed with God’s love and grace, we celebrate gifts of diversity.
By Jesus Christ’s example, we welcome, in love, all who rejoice and worship with us.
+ + +
God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy.
As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.
*Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison.
Prelude What a Friend We Have in Jesus Chiming of the Hour Welcome
Introit
To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, Who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life gate that all may go in. Praise the Lord; praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord; praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, And give him the glory: great things he has done! (hymn 634)
*Call to Worship (from Psalm 42)
Sing to the Lord a new song; God’s praise from the ends of the earth! Let the sea roar and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants. For God will turn the darkness into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things God will do, for God’s people will not be forsaken.
*Hymn 837 Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
*Invitation to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
God of steadfast love, you have shown us what really matters in life—to love you with all that we are, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Yet, we continually miss the mark you have set. As a result, our priorities are in disarray, and our allegiance is far from you. Have mercy on us, Lord. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, so that our actions might reflect your realm of compassion and justice; through Christ our Lord we pray.
(time for silent confession) And let God’s people say: Amen.
*Assurance of Forgiveness
*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

Sermon Five Essential Questions in Life Sharon Youngs #5: “What Really Matters?”
*Affirmation of Faith (from A Brief Statement of Faith)
In life and in death we belong to God. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Amen.
Call to Prayer (hymn 835, refrain)
Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to thee; let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

WORSHIP NOTES
We conclude this month’s sermon series entitled,
“Five Essential Questions in Life” this morning.
The series was inspired by James Ryan’s
commencement address to the 2016 graduating
class from Harvard’s Graduate School of
Education. The five questions: I wonder…, Wait,
what?, How can I help?, Couldn’t we at least…,
and What really matters?
Our hymns and anthem today are in a gospel style.
They were written in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, and bear a certain “family
resemblance” of musical style. Often used for re-
vival and camp meetings, these hymns are easy to
sing and harmonize, and the rhythms will have
your toes tapping!
Thank you to John Purifoy and members of the
Sunny Side Band for sharing their musical gifts
with us this morning.
“FIFTH SUNDAY” CELEBRATION
Join the fun after worship today. It’s our “Fifth
Sunday” celebration in the fellowship hall. There
will be a friendly competition in the fine art of
banana split building—but the main attraction is
the chance to spend time with your FPC family!
