In the matter of life’s basic loyalty, temptation is a many-heated monster.” Christians often neglect to see is how poisonous idolatry can be. In 1982, seven people in Chicago were killed after taking Tylenol that had been laced with cyanide. These seven people woke up one day and took Tylenol, which they thought would help them, only to find out too late it would be the cause of their death. It’s sad, but idolatry works the same way in the hearts of people. There are a lot of people who will be denied entrance into Heaven on the Day of Judgment because their hearts were not focused on God. Because, even though they loved the Lord, they didn’t place Him first in their life. Those Idolatrous items in our lives might make us feel good for a moment, but in the end, will be the cause of our eternal death. There is nothing greater than God, and therefore nothing worth placing over Him. We need to put to death the idols in our lives that control our very soul, (Colossians 3:5). Maybe the question we should be asking ourselves is, what is our soul worth? Matthew 16:26 says, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Are you willing to give up being in Heaven for whatever idol you might be holding onto on earth? I will admit that it can sometimes be hard. We all have different things that we enjoy; spending time with our family, watching movies, playing sports, or hanging out with friends. The problem is when we place those things above God when we begin to focus or desire those things more than our relationship with the Lord. So, re-evaluate your life. Check and see what is most important to you, and if you notice that you have created an idol in something of the world, then re-prioritize and start focusing on God again. “Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry,” (1 Corinthians

First, I just wanted to say a quick thank-you to everyone who helped with the Bay Area Wide Devo. Second, I’d like to thank everyone for their support and help with all the events for the youth this summer. We would not be able to do these things without your support and assistance. The summer is almost over, and we have just a few events left before the summer comes to a close and school begins. These busy summers always seem to fly by and seem shorter and shorter. With things like VBS, camps, Trek, and the Bay Area Wides the summer goes quickly. It is easy to get caught up in all the events and going throughout the summer and forget the message of these events: Christ. We look at having fun and being with friends, which is great but should not be the focus. I remember being a teen and looking forward to camps and devotionals to see friends, forgetting that it was more about learning about Christ and how to be a better Christian. Even when we become adults, we can forget what or why we are doing things. We are sharing the gospel with others by our actions whether we realize it our not. The summer is a busy time and it is almost over. Don’t forget the important things. Remember not only who you are, but WHOSE you are. Zach

Thinking About Idolatry! When you think of idolatry, what comes to mind? When you read verses like 1 John 5:21 which says, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols,” what do you visualize? Do you imagine the golden calf that was commissioned by Aaron in Exodus 22? Does the word “idol” remind you of the statue of Dagon, in 1 Samuel 5, and how fervently the Philistines bowed down before it? I wonder if we understand, truly, the warning against idolatry throughout the Bible? This was not something mentioned only during the era of Jesus Christ and his teachings, but something taught from the beginning of time. God is a jealous God; as He should be considering that mankind has always sought something or someone greater than He (Exodus 34:14). In Ezekiel 20:7-8 it sadly describes idolatry when it says, “Each of you, throw away the abomination which are before his eyes, and do not defile yourselves with idols of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. But they rebelled against Me and would not obey Me. They did not all cast away the abominations which were before their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said, ‘I will pour out My fury on them and fulfill My anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.” As Christians we must not defile our lives with the abomination of idolatry; therefore, we must not allow the world to take priority above God. Although we may not create physical idols like people in the past once did, we must acknowledge that idolatry can come in many shapes and forms. We must realize that anything we place above God is an idol and should be destroyed. As one writer wrote, “Today’s idols are more in the self than on the shelf.” James Packer, author of Your Father Loves You, wrote, “What other gods could we have besides the Lord? Plenty. For Israel, there were the Canaanite Baals, those jolly nature gods whose worship was a rampage of gluttony, drunkenness, and ritual prostitution. For us there are still the great gods Sex, Shekels, and Stomach (an unholy trinity constituting one god: self), and the other enslaving trio, Pleasure, Possessions, and Position, whose worship is described as ‘The Lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life’ (1 John 2:16).
