From the Pastor Dear Parishioners, I will be gone during the month of July. In my absence, Fr. Michael Ewert, O.F.M. will assist Fr. Ken and Fr. Vernon. Some of you might remember Fr. Mi-chael as Fr. Novatus Ewert, O.F.M. Father was appointed here at St. Francis as a newly ordained priest a few years ago. At this time the priests from St. Francis are also helping out at Bishop and Island Grove during Fr. Joe Carlos, O.F.M. absence who is on a sabbatical. Some friends of Fr. Ed and myself are taking us on an Alaskan cruise. We thought about it for some time and agreed now is acceptable time for both of us to take an extended vacation. This past year has been difficult for us with the passing of our dear brother and sister. We don’t know what the future holds for us. So please be patient, kind and understanding with Fr. Ken and Fr. Vernon. Thank you so much for your kindness. Please remember me in your prayers that I may return healthy and renewed. Peace, Love, Joy Fr. Austin

Meditation for July 4 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Galatians 6:14)

Why would Paul “boast” in the cross? Isn’t it wrong to brag—especially if it’s about something you didn’t do in the first place? These would be good ques-tions if Paul really were “boasting” in this way. Actually, the Greek word that we translate as “boast” (kauchaomai) can also be understood to mean “rejoicing in.” And that’s what Paul meant here. He made it clear that he was re-joicing only in the cross and not in his own accomplish-ments or abilities. Why? Because it was by the power of the cross that he became a new creation, set free from the grip of sin and death (Galatians 6:15).

How freeing is this message for all of us! We don’t have to spend our lives trying to measure up to im-possible standards. We don’t have to keep trying to make ourselves good enough for God to accept us. He has al-ready forgiven us. He has already taken our old, fallen lives and crucified them with his Son. And even more amazing, he has filled us with his Holy Spirit, making us a vessel of his very own divine life and love!

Today, think about all that God has done for you through the cross of Jesus. Celebrate the fact that because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, you are a new creation. Sin has lost its power. Death has been destroyed. The gates of heaven are open wide. Nothing can separate you now from the love of God!

At Mass today, feel free to enjoy the Eucharist. Don’t worry about the areas of your life that still need to be changed. They’ll be there waiting for you after Mass. Instead, let the Bread of Life remind you of everything Jesus has done for you. Then in your prayer, go ahead and boast in the cross of Christ. Boast in his kindness and love. Make this a day filled with great rejoicing.

“Jesus, all praise and glory are yours! You have made me a new creation, and I rejoice in you!”

Tune in to Catholic Radio Sunday mornings on AM 1090—FM 104.7 WCRA Effingham Missionary Speaker

This weekend, July 3/4, we will host a missionary speaker, Bishop Moses Costa, CSC, the Bishop of the diocese of Dinajpur in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is surrounded by India and the Bay of Bengal. Approximately 20,000,000 people live in this country. Of this amount, 10% are tribal of different groups and the number of tribal Catholics is 42,000. The tribal are double minority for being aborigi-nal and Christian. These aboriginal people are looked down upon as second-class citizens because they are mi-nority, illiterate and landless. The Dinajpur diocese works with evangelization, justice issues, provides educational services and health care services for these people. You are invited to help Bishop Moses Costa, the priests and reli-gious of his diocese with your monetary and prayerful as-sistance. Thank you for your generosity.

FAMILY CORNER Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment or just do something nice for no reason. Charles, a jet fighter pilot in Vietnam flew 75 combat missions when his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Charles ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was cap-tured and spent 6 years in a Vietnamese communist prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day while having lunch with his wife in a local restau-rant, a man at another table came up and said, “You’re Charles! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam for the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk. You were shot down!” “How in the world did you know that?” asked Charles. “I packed your parachute,” the man replied. Charles gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, “I guess it worked!” Charles assured him, “It sure did. If your chute hadn’t worked, I wouldn’t be here today.” That night, Charles couldn’t sleep. He kept thinking about that man. What did he look like in a Navy uniform—a Dixie cup hat, a bib in back, and bell bottom pants. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said good morning, how are you or anything else because, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor. Charles thought of the many hours the sailor had spent on a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn’t know. Who’s packing your parachute? Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. When his plane went down in enemy territory, Charles needed many kinds of parachutes—physical parachute, mental parachute, emotional parachute and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety. This experience should remind us to prepare ourselves to weather whatever storms lie ahead. As you go through this week, recognize people who pack your parachute! Give them a call, send an e-mail, write a note or shake their hand. Let’s pray for all those who pack parachutes!!!

Please Be Aware Please be aware someone is taking pallets from the back of the paper depot. If you have seen someone taking them or know of information concerning this, please call Ken Hardiek at 857-3610.

CONTRIBUTION ENVELOPE ERROR There is an error in the July/August contribution envelope mailing. When the envelope company added the special envelope for the Missionary Cooperative collection, they also changed the name of the Effingham Catholic Charities collection envelope to Missionary Cooperative. So, you will have two Missionary Cooperative collection envelopes in your packet. The company is correcting the problem by doing a mailing of just the Effingham Catholic Charities collection envelope at no charge. You should receive your Catholic Charities collection envelope in the mail during the week of July 19th. Please use this envelope for your contributions. Thank you.

RCIA invitations will be in next week’s bulletin. Watch for them and think seriously about who you may invite to the further study of the Catholic faith. (non-practicing Catholics, non-baptized persons, persons from another faith tradition that are seeking something more)

Holy Humor… A Mensa convention for people with high IQs was taking place in a major city. Several attendees lunched at a local café. While dining, they discovered that their salt shaker contained pepper and their pepper shaker was full of salt. How could they swap the contents of the bottles without spilling, using only the implements at hand? The group of intellectuals debated and finally came up with a brilliant solution involving a napkin, a straw, and an empty saucer. They called the waitress over to dazzle her with their plan. “Ma’am,” they said, “we couldn’t help but notice that the pepper shaker contains salt and the salt shaker...” “Oh,” the waitress interrupted. “Sorry about that.” She unscrewed the caps of both bottles and switched them.

Lost and Found—A set of car keys was found by the tennis courts at the grade school. If you are missing your, please claim at the parish office.
