PRAYER & WORSHIP

Burdens do not feel light when you must carry them alone. So many times, you can feel overwhelmed and not able to carry on. During this time of the Covid 19 pandemic, life can feel like that. You ask how did we get here and what can be done? Today’s readings give a glimpse into how we can survive and come out the other side with smiles and strength.Jesus tells us in the Gospel to come to Him when you are burdened and feel like giving up. Our God is with us, holding us and helping us get through what life throws our way. Do we really believe this? I think I have seen the strength of our faith in the faces of all of you. I see your deep faith and belief that we can come out the other side and still be strong. I thank all of you for giving witness to what you believe and hear in our readings today. Be strong! Live your faith in love and let people see that God holds us in the palm of His hand. Our yoke is easy when we let God help us carry it.

Sr. Karen Collier, SSL

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN DID YOU KNOW?Tips for keeping calm and parenting during stressful times

We are living in unprecedented times, and many parents are stretched to capacity. The added stress of pandemic living can make it hard to parent calmly and effectively when children are acting out, but it’s important to remember that children are also going through a huge period of change right now. Instead of reacting in anger, try these ideas to keep your cool. Talk to a friend – many people are suffering from a lack of physical community, so reach out by phone or text. Pray together as a family, asking for patience, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get you through the day. Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it when you need it and grant it when they do. For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Say it on repeat: I am going to keep my calm!” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

OUR CATHOLIC LIFEArchbishop José H. Gomez has joined the Catholic bishops of California in a special presentation of the Stations of the Cross to overcome racism in our hearts and society. The video, subtitled in Spanish and Vietnamese, is available at https://lacatholics.org along with a Stations of the Cross guide.“As we pray today, we recall that our Church and our local community here have been shaped by the faith and the gifts of African Americans from the beginning,” prayed Archbishop Gomez. “So let us ask our Lord today to bring us closer as brothers and sisters, and continue to build the family of God here in California and everywhere in our nation and world.” Archbishop Gomez introduced the special prayer from St. Odilia parish in South Los Angeles – the first African American Catholic Church established in the west built by African Americans as a beacon of faith, hope and love. The parish, established in 1926, is a hub for social and religious activities in the community. Many African American Catholic families from throughout the Archdiocese of Los Angeles can trace their family’s Catholic roots back to St. Odilia’s. Anderson Shaw, Director of the Archdiocese’s African American Catholic Center for Evangelization, lead the opening prayer. Each of the 14 Stations of the Cross – reflecting on the persistent sin of racism as a rejection of the full humanity of the children of God – was led by a bishop of a California Catholic diocese at pertinent locations throughout California. The Sixth Station was prayed at the Fruitvale BART station in the Diocese of Oakland, the scene of a fatal shooting of Oscar Grant III in 2009 by a police officer. The Diocese of San Diego presented the tenth Station of the Cross in central San Diego where the headquarters of the KKK stood in 1920.
