THE LESSONSThe People SitA Reading from the New Testament Romans 7:15-25aI do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Clergy The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 145:8-15Typically, we read the Psalms responsively. Online, we will read the Psalms in unison as a symbol of our enduring connection.

8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, * slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The Lord is loving to everyone * and his compassion is over all his works. 10 All your works praise you, O Lord, * and your faithful servants bless you. 11 They make known the glory of your kingdom * and speak of your power;

12 That the peoples may know of your power * and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; * your dominion endures throughout all ages. 14 The Lord is faithful in all his words * and merciful in all his deeds. 15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; * he lifts up those who are bowed down.

THE HOLY GOSPELMatthew 11:16-19,25-30Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREEDThe People stand as able and say together

We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty,maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light,true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father.Through him all things were made.For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirithe became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father.He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,who proceeds from the Father and the Son.With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.He has spoken through the Prophets.We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead,and the life of the world to come. PRAYER FOR HEALINGGod whose vision spans all the ages of the earth, help us to see in this moment the pain and suffering our sisters brothers are subjected to, and give us the will to right the wrongs we have done, by our actions and our inactions. Ease the pain of all your people. Help us also to see beyond this moment and to embrace the wider perspective of your whole creation. Deliver us from fear and lead us into a way of love and justice that makes room for all peoples. Send your spirit among us that we may know the healing power of your love, All this we ask through your son, Jesus, the reconciler of the world. Amen.

PRAYER FOR COMMUNIONThe People say together God of Love, we thank you for bringing us together in this place, on this day to honor and to celebrate you and your People, the living, loving Body of Christ. Jesus told his disciples, “Whenever two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Bless this gathering as a sacramental rite, a visible sign of your love for us, and our love for one another. Even in the absence of the bread and the wine, let us feed on You, your Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, in our hearts, with faith and thanksgiving. Amen.
