ANSWERING JESUS’ CALL

Many of our young people have volunteered to help those less fortunate

than themselves. Many of our adults have volunteered to help those

struggling to survive from the tornadoes that decimated numerous homes

and businesses.

When Jesus began his public ministry he quickly had more work to do

than he could possibly handle by himself. So he selected twelve apostles, but

even that was not enough. There was more to do than even the apostles

could get done. Therefore Jesus called 72 additional people.

Today’s gospel tells the story of how Jesus selected 72 disciples and

sent them out in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He told

his workers as he sent them out: “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers

are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his

harvest.”

Two thousand years later the problem is still the same - an abundance

of work and a shortage of laborers. There is more to do than Christ and his

helpers can possibly get done. I think there is a way that we can all respond

to our Lord’s call. However, before we do, let me offer a few observations.

Jesus devoted his entire life to helping people. Some of you may think

the business of Christ is mainly a religious matter. His work is saving souls

and safely ushering them into heaven. But think back to his earthy ministry.

What did he do? He fed the hungry. He healed the sick. He befriended the

lonely. He forgave the guilty. He rebuked the proud. He defended the

oppressed.

It is still the same today. Christ cares about a lot of things, but his chief

concern is people. A second point I’d like to make has to do with where we

would have to go. And there’s good news here. We don’t have to travel to

some far-off place to work for Him. There are people who need to be loved

right where we are. There are human necessities that need to be met in our

home, in our neighborhood, in our schools—every place that our daily lives

may take us. The main thing that most of us need to do is cultivate an

awareness. The job opportunities are all around us. We simply fail to see

them.

One of the amazing characteristics of Jesus was his awareness of

people. He saw Zacchaeus in the tree and called him down and changed his

life. A poor widow dropped two pennies in the temple treasury and Jesus

made her a classic example of generosity. A crippled man lay beside the pool

of Bethesda for 38 years. He had been there so long that no one noticed him

anymore. But Jesus came, saw him and healed him. He was always aware of

people.

We don’t need to go to some far-off place in order to serve Christ. We

can start today, right where we are. All we need are eyes to see, a heart to

care, and the will to try. There is work waiting to be done all around us. Jesus

is calling each of us. Will we hear his call and respond?

IMPORTANT WELCOMES

Welcome to Sister Mary Ann Barnhorn, a Sister of Notre Dame de

Namur, coming from Cincinnati, who will be with us next weekend at all

Masses as this year’s Mission Cooperative Plan speaker. Parishioners

will recall that each year all archdiocesan parishes receive a mission

speaker coordinated by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati Mission Office.

Sister will be offering a reflection at all Masses next weekend which

will integrate the Sunday Scriptures as well as some dimensions of her

order’s missionary endeavors. Please say a prayer for Sister Barnhorn.

She will be doing something I’m not sure I would be able to do: have the

energy and stamina to speak at six Sunday Masses!

It is with joy that Incarnation Parish welcomes two new staff

members. After a two month search process we have hired Jayne LoConti

and Deacon David Gillespie. Let me offer a very brief introduction of

each.

Jayne, who has been hired as our director of religious education,

comes to us from St. Mary Magdalene Church in Arizona where she

worked for many years in the same capacity. She moved to the Mason

area a year ago to be closer to her mother. The interview team

appreciated that Jayne is very experienced and possesses great creativity

in engaging parents of children in faith formation. She is also light on her

feet, as Jesus was, having flexibility in ministry, since the growing church

where she ministered did not always have facilities readily available for

classrooms and even her office!

Deacon David Gillespie, our new pastoral associate, is from St.

Patrick, Troy, making a transition to full time parish ministry after a career

in the business world. David has a hearty laugh and a bright smile, just

like one would imagine Jesus having. He has worked with youth in

scouting and in parish life and has a great deal of evangelical zeal.

We will be getting to know both Jayne and David better as they will

be sharing their history and hopes in the bulletin and on the app. Also,

toward the end of August I will be inviting them to introduce themselves to

parishioners both formally and informally at Masses.

As you will recall, last bulletin and app. article found me offering

words of thanks for inspiration in parish life. What I didn’t say is that I ran

out of room in my article! Wonderfully, there is always room for more

thanks for inspiration!

For example, I am greatly inspired by ushers who are doing a great

job reaching out in welcome to parishioners and guests. They are doing

this by striving not to chat among themselves, but rather by spreading out

and being at different doors offering a warm greeting!

To that inspiration add the dozens of people who are considering

becoming Eucharistic Ministers after an appeal was made at weekend

Masses. As I related in my homily two weekends ago, while we have

enough ministers, some are on the schedule several times a month and

some even most weekends. Thanks to those who heard Jesus’ call to be

made worthy by him to minister his presence in an even more profound

way!

There are times when a family has no one who feels comfortable

proclaiming the Word of God at their loved one’s funeral. This makes

perfect sense, because more than anything else, as grieving family

members, they ought to be ministered to by us rather than ministering to

themselves.

Recall, over the past months, about a dozen retired parishioners

offered themselves to be funeral servers. They are doing a great job and

they represent all the People of God at Incarnation as we minister to the

bereaved, providing three great works of

Mercy: burying the dead, comforting the

afflicted and praying for the living and the

dead.

I am wondering whether there might

be current lectors and Eucharistic

ministers who would be open to

ministering at funerals. In this manner

there would be a more varied presence of

Jesus ministering at funerals.

Pastoral Associate, Stacy Stang, who

leads funeral ministry, would keep that list

handy in case we might need a minister or

two. Again, this would not be a frequent

ministry.

Continued thanks to Shari and Phil

Kern and so many volunteers in parish life

who have laid the groundwork for a great

parish picture directory! Many thanks to

Kristin Neighbors, our parish

administrative assistant, who is fielding

dozens of calls a day about different

dimensions of the directory!

We have added three additional

picture days, August 13, 14 and 15, which

will probably be filled even before you read

this! Hopefully we will continue to add

days, so please go online or call Kristin in

the parish office to schedule an

appointment!

In the meantime, as we receive the

pictures from our scheduled sittings,

parishioners are invited to submit “event

pictures” from parish, PREP and school

life.

In past directories, it was common to

have pictures of all our ministry groups,

the servers, choir members, church

cleaners etc. Such pictures require an

incredible amount of organization to

schedule and there are always many

ministers who can’t make those photos.

Instead of having organized ministry

pictures, we will have several pages of

pictures of parish and school life. Many

times these are like a collage. Therefore,

if you have a picture or two that you would

like considered for the parish picture

directory, please send it to the parish

email [email protected]

with the subject line in all caps: EVENT

PICTURE.

Sincerely and With Love in Christ,

Fr. Pat

PILGRIMAGE TO OBERAMMERGAU, GERMANY

Join parishioners from Incarnation and St. Veronica

Parishes to see the renowned Passion Play June 26 -

July 5, 2020. In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau,

Bavaria, Germany vowed that if God spared them from

the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would

produce a play thereafter for all time every 10 years

depicting the life and death of Jesus. The production

involves over 2,000 performers, musicians and stage

technicians, all residents of the village. Fr. Smith will be

joining us on this pilgrimage so we will be able to have

Mass most days. This pilgrimage may be a performing

choir tour depending on how many choir members travel

with us. We will be traveling to Germany (Berlin, Leipzig,

Nuremberg, Salzburg, Augsburg, Munich etc.) and

Austria for 10 days and see the play on July 4, 2020.

The cost is $3,584 (excluding airfare). I have printed,

detailed brochures of our itinerary and booking

instructions for anyone who wants one. Please feel free

to see me after any Mass or call me at the parish offices

937-433-1188 or email me at
