Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers and Sisters.

Today’s scripture readings offer us great hope. The first reading is to the Israelites who have returned from exile in Babylon and have no king at this present time. The prophet tells them that their God will defeat their enemies and give them a king like no other, a gentle, humble and just leader who will take care of them. Clearly for us the image is that of Christ entering Jerusalem and so to is the promise for us that our Savior will take care if us.

In Romans, Paul tells us that because we are Christians we no longer live in the flesh, that is, in the world, because we have been redeemed. To the extent we focus on the things of the world we are not acting as like redeemed people and we risk losing eternal life. The way we live redeemed, that is, according to the spirit, is by following Christ’s command to love one another, even with those we disagree.

The gospel message from Jesus is directed to all of us. It follows His rejection by many of the towns where His miracles were discounted. He regrets the pride that prevents the so-called intelligentsia from accepting His message of love and forgiveness but He welcomes those of us who are humble enough to accept His invitation to join Him.

After emphasizing the closeness of His own relationship with His Father by using the affec-tionate term of “Abba” several times He invites all of His audience to learn of this intimacy and to join in it is so that our own trials and tribulations will not overwhelm us. His language references a Hebrew scripture from Sirach that His audience would know references a call to humility in order to be free.

The same offer Christ makes to the Jews He makes to us today and everyday. The more we act according to His command to love one another the more we are accepting His invitation to follow Him. God bless.

Dcn. Brian

PEACEMAKERS In bringing world leaders together to work for peace, Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is a Christian working for peace. Even after being President, Jimmy Carter has worked as a negotiator in hundreds of peace talks. He has traveled around the world for the purpose of making peace. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He established the Carter Center to advance human rights. The Center mediates and prevents conflicts in the world, monitors free elections processes and improves global health.

Quote: “We become not a melting pot, but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”

“We have a tendency to condemn people who are different from us, to define their sins as paramount and our own sinful-ness as being insignificant.”

“We should live our lives as though Christ was coming this afternoon.”

ADORATION HOURS CHANGE EFFECTIVE NOW, The hours of Adoration on Thursdays will be cut back from 10a.m. to 11:45a.m. with Benediction ending at 12p.m. This has become necessary because it is no longer possible to guar-antee attendance with the necessary minimum of attendees dur-ing the rest of the day and has become a safety concern as well as a liturgical one. As previously done, confession will still be offered after Mass on the Thursdays before the First Friday of the month and Adoration will be offered on the First Friday of every month for one hour after daily Mass from 10a.m. to 11a.m. A heartfelt thank you to all the people who have given generously of their time to keep Jesus company in the Blessed Sacrament.. Sincerely, Elaine Lahey Adoration Ministry Coordinator Queen of Apostles Church
