Ronnie Scott’s bigger than theOlympics........And so finally the centre piece of 2012 heaves into view and castsits ringed shadow over the city. The Olympics have been the focus ofso much attention for the past six years it’s difficult to think of lifewithout them, a bit like pregnancy, or Afghanistan. I have mixedfeelings about it, not keen on the dictatorial nature and elitism of theorganisation but don’t mind a bit of sport. At the club we assumedthere would be a ‘great boon for British business’ so like the rest ofthe town we looked forward to liberating a few grand from the CocaColas of this world, but to date we have had no ‘Olympic’ businessat all. Indeed the only slice we were to enjoy, a party with Seb andthe Prime Minister et al, was cancelled as there was a ‘brandconflict’. Yep that’s right, Ronnie Scott’s is officially too big a brandfor the Olympics to handle. Paranoid?

Anyway we expect to be busy by default so we are staging a seriesof classic jazz nights featuring the music of some of the greatsplayed by the cream of the UK jazz scene, thereby dishing out a lotof work to UK jazz guys and gals, paid work I might add - take noteLOCOG - and at the same time catering for what may end up beinga heavily tourist crowd. We also expect to be very busy for the LateLate Shows, which might be interesting as that’s the only time of daywe are allowed to get beer deliveries. (Got to keep the artery freebetween the Dorchester and the shoe shops).

And before and after? Well as ever its musically brilliant, in JulyAverage White Band have sold out already but you can still enjoylegends Pharaoh Sanders, Jimmy Cobb, Take 6, and Stanley Clarkewith the Police’s Stewart Copeland as well as a very special eveningwith Al Jarreau. And after the sports? Roy Ayers, Booker T, Pee WeeEllis and Seth MacFarlane all drop in so although it may seem asthough it won’t, life will go on post ‘London 2012’, rather pleasantlyhere at the club.

Footnote. We are saddened by the premature death of trumpeter andfriend of the club Abram Wilson. It’s a plain tragedy..

AWB are widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in thehistory of music. Though perhaps best known for their timeless instrumentalmega-hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' the band's strength actually lay in theirconsistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across several gold sellingalbums and multi- grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records.Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took theinfluences of their R&B heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown,Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own 'authentic' soundwhich was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere.

An extremely welcome return to Ronnie Scott’s for vibist, vocalist andlegendary bandleader Ayers, once one of the most visible jazz vibraphonistsof the 1960s, then a funky jazz and R&B bandleader extraordinaire inthe 1970s and ‘80s, Roy Ayers’ reputation is now that of one of theprophets of acid jazz, a man decades ahead of his time.

Perhaps acid jazz would have emerged even if Roy Ayers had neverexisted, but it certainly would have sounded different. Scores of DJs,hip-hoppers, acid jazzers, and others have incorporated samples ofmusic created by Ayers into their own work, making his sound anintegral part of these emerging musical forms. His status as thegodfather of acid jazz, or jazz funk, or whichever label you prefer, represents a second life in the career of vibraphonist and composerAyers, who first rocked American dance floors in the 1970s with suchanthems as “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” and “Freaky Deaky.” Twentyyears later, Ayers is as ubiquitous in the dance clubs as he ever was.

Cottle, like almostevery electric bassist who plays jazz, has been influenced by the formerWeather Report star’s style that extended the range of Leo Fender’s humblefour string bass guitar to include high pitched harmonics, lead melody playingand of course intricate sax-like solos. Yet Pastorius’ musical legacy goes waybeyond his groundbreaking chops, and Cottle has created brand new scoresthat magnify the smallest musical details that often result in tender harmonicflourishes or dazzling multi-layered contrapuntal melody lines.
