By the time you read this, 2013 will be half over. It has been inspiring, to

say the least, seeing the excite-ment in the Clubs and Units over the groundbreaking work that is being done throughout the jurisdiction. Some of my most prideful moments have been when I have talked to Shriners who have seen what is being done by their club or unit, or have read the excit-ing articles in the Desert Dust, and want to get involved again. This enthusiasm is contagious, and the greatest benefactor is our “Kids”.

Hello Nobles, Ladies, and Friends of the Shrine. My items this

month will be rather brief since our infamous, I mean famous Desert Dust Editor tells me that there are lots of items for this month’s issue. Since I don’t have a great deal to report, this has worked out perfectly for me.

O.K., I was reading the Impe-rial Shrine Protocol manual the other day, as I’m sure most of you also do on oc-casion. These rules get into the “down and dirty” on how we should conduct Shrine business and ourselves. I’m sure I have read some of the rules before, but a refresher was quite interesting and I would like to share some of my findings.

Parades...of course we can’t throw candy in a parade, but, a Shriner can walk alongside the road and hand out candy. Now here’s a little known fact, at Imperial parades, no temple offi cer is permitted in a parade unless there are at least 15 members from the temple’s units there, or unless the Imperial Potentate has giv-en express permission. I did not know that one.

When the Imperial Potentate comes ‘avisitin, make sure that during ceremonials and business meetings he is seated to the immediate right of your Potentate, with the Chief Rab-ban being seated on the imme-diate left. And, your potentate should personally escort the Imperial Potentate to their table. Now Canadian protocol

is a bit different, but you can read up on that one yourself.

Ah, now a little bit about the fez. The fez is to never be worn at a Masonic lodge communication or meeting. At non-Shrine functions, if a temple offi cer is representing the Shrine, he may wear the fez. No other Nobles there are to wear the fez. I didn’t know this one either. No other per-son is ever allowed to wear a Noble’s fez. No more than two clasps or pins are to be used to secure the tassel. Inter-esting isn’t it? O.K., if you’re heart isn’t racing yet, here’s one for you, how should a Shriner wear his lapel pin on a sport coat or jacket? On his left lapel of course. And, a Shrine pin cannot only be worn at non-Shrine events,

but is actually encouraged to be worn.

O.K., that’s probably enough for this learning session. Wow, the time does fl y. As I mentioned last month, the 2013 Oasis Shrine Circus telemarketing is in full swing, and I would encourage ev-eryone to contribute to the Mom & Pops Program which should be out, according to our Circus Chairman Rodney (the circus man) Morgan in early July. Join Rodney and me by contributing at the Ringmaster level this year!!

Well, I’ve rambled long enough. Things are going well here at Oasis, and we would love to have your stop by and visit your temple. Take care until next month, and remember, the work you do for our fraternity and philanthropy is sincerely appreciated and essential to our hospital children.

Gary

For those of you who were fortunate enough to attend our Spring Ceremonial, you know what a great time was had by everyone. The weather was absolutely beautiful, the pa-rade was great, and the streets were packed with spectators. The most important part of our weekend was that 56 Shriners were made – the largest class of new candidates in recent memory. Our class was high-lighted by two Shriners who have close ties to our hospitals. One is the grandson of one of the fi rst patients to be cared for by the Greenville hospital dur-ing the 1930’s. The other was a burn patient at our Cincinnati

hospital during the 1970’s. I had the pleasure of presenting the fez to our patient/Shriner, along with Illustrious Sir Bill Harward on Saturday night. His enthusiasm is a true inspi-ration to us all. Both will be featured in upcoming issues of The Desert Dust. I want to thank all who were involved for making our weekend a grand success.

I also want to thank all of those who came to the Ladies Lun-cheon to support Lady Rhon-da. Outer Guard Ken Bowen presented the program, with a focus on our hospitals, and on the role our signifi cant oth-

ers play in our Shrine activi-ties. My son, Warner, started his own project by making pot holders, selling them to raise funds for our hospitals. Thanks to the generosity of our ladies, he raised nearly $400.00.

I had an interesting email wait-ing for me when I returned from Blowing Rock. A Noble who moved from Washington, DC to Denver, NC contacted me and wanted to know how he could become a member of Oasis. I called him, introduced myself, and explained the pro-cedure to become an Oasis member. I also explained that Oasis was the #1 Temple in the world in both contributions and membership. He was truly surprised to learn this. I went on to tell him that his Lady was welcome at Shrine Club meet-ings, and told him that our La-dies are a major player in our success. He was shocked at

the involvement of the Ladies of Oasis, and said that was not customary where he comes from. He was very excited to visit the local Shrine Club, and to join Oasis. I am excited to spread the good news of what Oasis has to offer.

By the time you read this, Fam-ily Fun Day at beautiful Red Fez Shrine Club will have come and gone. I hope you were able to

join us for a day of great fun, food and fellowship. We will have a full report in the August edition of the Desert Dust.

In closing, always remember the real reason you became a Shriner. Our only goal is “Put-ting Kids First”.

Yours in the FaithFred

DonATion fRom Sunshine Elementary SchoolIt was on a Friday after-

noon in cool, green, clean Blowing Rock. People

were planning BIG things for a huge Shrine Ceremonial. In a small meeting room within the Chetola Resort sixteen people who had served their Masonic Lodges as Master sat on the edge of their chairs. They came from throughout Oasis Shriners Jurisdiction to say, “What can I do? I want to be involved in something great!”

When the meeting ended Noble and Past Master Gordy Peeler, Secretary reported

that there were now 15 Past Masters covering 17 Masonic Lodges as Ambassadors, and that we had added four new Past Masters to our number just prior to the meeting, and that there were now

198 Past Masters in the unit.

Captain and Past Master (and, Past Potentate) Terry Jones predicted that by the conclu-sion of the Blowing Rock Cer-emonial, the Past Masters Unit would have over 225 mem-bers!

The by-laws are being revised by P.W.M. Ed Becton, and meetings are being planned at each ceremonial.

If you are a Past Master of your Lodge, and you would like to investigate the possibil-ity of becoming an Oasis Am-bassador to your Lodge, or if you have questions regarding the unit, please do not hesi-tate to call Illustrious Sir Terry Jones at (336) 764-5502. Also, Past Master’s Secretary, Gordy Peeler can be reached by e-mail at [email protected]. Gordy’s telephone number is (704) 279-5764.

There is a needed and wanted place for all Past Masters who are Shriners to cement the brotherly love and friendship. Please consider the Past Mas-ters Unit by calling either W.B. Jones or W. B. Peeler.

Noble Mike Neaves who serves as Oriental Guide, member of the Oasis Board of Directors, has had a rich history in Masonry, and in the Shrine.

Noble Mike lists his hometown as Lansing, North Carolina. He and his Lady, Bobbie, currently call Jefferson, NC home.

Noble Mike graduated from Ashe Central High School, and is the owner of Mike Neaves Trucking Company.

He was raised in Ashe Lodge 594 in June, 2000. He is a Life Member of the Winston-Salem Valley, Scottish Rite. Is a mem-ber of York Rite, and a member of Royal Order of Jesters #109. He served as Master of Ashe Lodge 594 in 2006, having the distinction of serving as Master of his Lodge and President of his Shrine Club, all in the same year. Full plates are what it is all about.

Noble Mike became a Shriner in November, 2000, and hit the ground running. He was President of Ashe Shrine Club in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, and led the club in the construction of their new Ashe County Shrine Club building,

noble mike neaves located at 117 Morphew Lane, Jefferson, NC.

Noble Mike is the father of Noble Christopher Neaves, a member of Lexington Shrine Club, and daughter, Chiquitha Ackerman.

He is grandfather to Riley and Mason Neaves, and Chasiti Jordan, who is the wife of Noble Terry Jordan.

Although Noble Mike is quiet and unassuming, he works hard in the background. He has generously in the past used his trucks to pick up and deliver the onions from Georgia, delivering them back to our Clubs.

In addition, he is a Patient Coordinator, a long time Tripster, is a Past Ambassador, and a Past Trustee for District 3 of Oasis Shrine.

He counts watching his son journey through the degrees in Masonry as being one of his most prideful periods in our Fraternity, and then seeing him made a Shriner. He cites the Caribbean Trip with Illustri-ous Sir John Sullivan one of the most special times since he has been a Shriner. His granddaughter, Chasiti, had just gotten married, and he and Lady Bobbie’s gift to them was treating she and her new husband to the cruise with them. Plus, he was able to keep his eye on his new

grandson-in-law, which he still does!!!!

The experience that is most memorable to him in the Shrine was when Illustrious Sir John Sullivan asked him if he would serve in the Divan line as a Director of the Board. It was indeed special to be asked to serve, and be a part of a Fraternity which he had worked so hard in.

Noble Mike is slated to become Potentate in 2017, at the will of the Nobility. I know he will have the full support of Oasis Shrine members. We welcome him to the ranks of the leadership of Oasis Shrine Center.

Congratulations to our newest Shriners!

Talk about a family affair. Warner Laxton, son of Illustrious Sir Fred Laxton, collected a total of $390.00 for Shriners Children’s Hospitals by

selling his hand-made pot holders at the Blowing Rock Ceremonial. Way to go Warner!!!!

The “Beat on the Street” Shows OffThe Oasis Drum & Bugle Corps held their 3rd Annual Car & Truck Show recently during the Mt. Holly Spring Fest, and we are happy to report that this “Hospital” fund raiser was a wonderful success.

The 2013 show had over 50 entries, the most in its short history. One great thing about this show is the variety of vehicles that enter. Strolling across the parking lot you can take in the beauty of brand new cars, old cars that still had their original paint, interior, & engine; hot rods, restored vintage cars, customs, rat rods, and pickups.

There was wonderful fellowship throughout the morning and early afternoon led by the Captain of the Corps, Dale Morton. The event was headed up by Past Captain Tommy Helms. Both of these Noble Brothers

would be quick to point out how many corps members and their ladies provided the backbone of support that you must have to make this type of fundraiser a success. They made the show more successful with their hard work in the raffl e, silent auction, 50/50 ticket and water sales. Keeping the air fi lled with music were The Boogie Woogie Kings, “Smokey” and “The Pope”.

Speaking of fellowship and unity, the Corps was thrilled to welcome members of the Oasis Ragtops to the show with their convertibles. Also, the Mt. Holly Masonic Lodge #544 was set up at the entrance of the show with their cookers and fryers. They had a very successful day and we understand that the fried bologna

sandwiches sold out early. One of the leaders of 544’s “cook team” is the Corps’ Drum Major, Eddie Wilson.

An additional unity & fellowship thought, if you please. The 1st Lt. of the Corps, Brian Wilson was able to bring out and set up the Oasis Big Rig Trailer with its’ walk through display about the hospital. At the end of the show, Brian reported that in addition to providing information to visitors, the donation jar had received contributions. Perhaps your club or unit will consider using this asset at an upcoming event to increase awareness about the mission of our hospitals. Contact the temple for more info.

As the early afternoon arrived, it was time to start announcing the various winners of the raffl es, auctions, and of course the Car & Truck Show. Best car award went to Neal Sparrow of Charlotte, for his red ‘57 Ford Fairlane. Best truck went to Robert White of Huntersville for his gold ‘75 Ford F-100. Lastly, the best of show went to Noble David Tuttle for his green ‘47 Ford. By the way, a “thank you” to the Desert Dust for helping the Corps promote the show. David Tuttle came to the show with his copy of the “Dust” in hand. He had seen the ad and entry form in the paper and had come to support the event.

The Drum & Bugle Corps is very grateful for each man and woman that made a donation to enter their vehicle in the show. When the “Hospital” wins, everyone wins!

These etchings were drawn by Presley McGinnis, a Shrine Hospital patient who has Cerebral Palsy. Presley was born 3 months premature, and had to spend the fi rst 3 ½ months of her life in the hospital. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at age 13 months by Shrine Childrens

Hospital, and has been a patient ever since. She is now 16 years old. She has had 9 operations thus far, and has used a walker since she was very little.

Due to her condition, she is unable to use a typical computer mouse, instead using a trackpad, which makes her etchings all the more amazing. At a recent graphic showcase, all of the graphic designers were stunned that the professional work you see here was completed by someone with such a signifi cant disability.

She is truly talented and amazing, and is ever so grateful to Shriners Children’s Hospitals for helping her. She says she likely would have never walked without their help. Another success story from Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

Dear Shriners and Shrine Ladies,

The 139th Imperial Session is only days away. We hope you have added this important event to your calendar. When Shriners and their Ladies gather together there is always fun and fellowship. However, it isn’t all about the fun. Your voting representatives will be meeting daily to conduct the business that is necessary to continue our great fraternity and health care system.

“SEND IN THE CLOWNS”

The largest documented gathering of clowns was in 1991 at Bognor Regis, UK, where 850 clowns, including 450 from North America, gathered for their annual clown convention. Nobles and Ladies, let’s work together to exceed the record of 850 clowns as documented in the Guinness World Records. Or, we’ll set a record for clowns in a parade in the United States. With teamwork, we can “Make-it-Happen!”

International Shrine Clown Association members, Noble Ernie “Rollo” Pearlstein and Noble Mark “Buzzy” Burgard have contacted Guinness World Records to secure our Claim ID #424879 and Membership #330549 for the application.

The leadership of ISCA under President George “Patches” Pipes will assist in complying with Guinness’ requirements to document the event. They will be aided by Murat Shrine Clowns and the Public Rela-tions Department, under the leadership of Amy Ritzel.

The Shrine Clowns will gather immediately prior to the pa-rade for documentation and registration. They will lead the parade by appearing be-fore the color guard in keep-

A message from the Imperial Potentateing with Shrine bylaws.

The recent Public Relations Seminar, under the leadership of Deputy Imperial Potentate John Cinotto and his team of Imperial Officers Dale Stauss and Gary Bergenske, provided an informative program to the PR teams from the various hos-pitals and temples. Corporate Public Relations Director Amy Ritzel and her staff added their valuable expertise to bring the seminar to a new level. Topics included Media and Marketing for a New Era, Dealing with Change, notification of Dromedary awards, Elec-tronic Media and Media training.

The Florida Shrine Association was hosted by Egypt Temple in Tampa, Fla., under the leadership of Past Potentate and FSA President Frank Mongiovi as-sisted by his Lady Nancy. The Potentate of Egypt Temple, Tom Robinson, and Lady Trish hosted the dinners and lunches at the temple and activity center. One dinner featured young wheelchair athletes playing soccer. Our patients participate in many athletic activities, encouraging one another and building their self-confidence.

Friday evening, the Prisoner’s Ball was organized by the Keystone Kops com-plete with a jail in the center of the banquet room. During a delicious dinner of “jailhouse stew,” arrest warrants could be purchased for a mere $2. Some of the alleged suspects had difficulty when appearing before the judge; others had difficulty finding anyone to bail them out of jail.

Next we traveled to Sudan Temple in New Bern, N.C., for their spring ceremo-nial under the leadership of Illustrious Sir Ken Bennett and his Lady Juanita. The event included a big parade in downtown New Bern. Friday evening clubs and units served BBQ, shrimp, hot dogs, hamburgers and much more. What a fun evening with music and dancing under the stars by the Trent River.

Al Bahr’s Centen-nial Ceremonial welcomed 44 new Nobles and their La-dies May 11th. Al Bahr’s Director’s Staff performed their first-ever Arch degree. Well done! Illustri-ous Sir Rudy Naza-reno’s goal this year is to remain GOLD in membership for the third year in a row.

His goal is to add 100 members – one new member for every year of Al Bahr’s existence. Illustrious Sir Rudy is on a roll.

The previous day, Imperial Sir Al and Potentate Rudy were interviewed by local media. Al Bahr’s clowns and the Tin Lizzies were also featured on the program.

Illustrious Sir Rudy Nazareno with Lady Evelyn at his side had all the details fine-tuned for a fantastic weekend. Saturday night’s 100th Anniversary Cel-ebration Banquet was held at the Scottish Rite Center.

We were also given a tour of Al Bahr’s Shrine camp in the Laguna Mountains by our personal Aide PP Don Wierman and his lady Shirley. It is a wonderful retreat for ceremonials, camping and other family events.

Acacia Past Potentate James Dodd and his Lady Donna welcomed Imperial Officers Wayne Lachut and Lady Janet, Jim Cain and Bill Bailey as well as Lady Jan and myself to the South Central Shrine Association meeting.

SCSA was “Rollin on the River” at the Belle Hotel and Casino in Baton Rouge on the Mississippi River. Acacia Shriners, under the leadership of Past Po-tentate and SCSA Past President Danny Johnson and his TEAM had all the details well organized for a weekend which featured motor corp and clown competitions, as well as lively performances by the Oriental Bands of Jerusa-lem and Acacia.

The Indy 50O Race visit hosted by Murat Shriners in Indianapolis, un-der the leadership of Illustrious Sir James “Jim” Priest and Lady Tammy, was a fun filled weekend. Friday’s activities included a heartwarming Memorial Service Luncheon at Mu-rat, a First Section ceremonial wel-coming six new Nobles and their La-dies, a sumptuous prime rib dinner followed by comedian Randy Riggle.

We attended the Carburetor Day Practice on Thursday at the speed-way, 500 Festival Parade on Satur-day, and the big race on Sunday, May 26th. Thank you Ill. Sir Jim and Lady Tammy.

The next day we traveled to visit with Hadi Shriners in Evansville, Ind., on the Ohio River. Illustrious Sir Kenneth S. Cooper and Lady Marilyn shared the temple’s history with us as well as their goals for its future. Hadi has a prominent location on the river and is very active in the community.

We look forward to seeing all of you in the beautiful city of Indianapolis from June 30th through July 4th.

Yours in the Faith,

The Potentates trip to Las Vegas, scheduled for October 3 – 6, has been cancelled. It has been discovered that the group rate for this trip is much higher than the rate members could get by booking individually. It is my desire to provide interesting trips at an affordable rate. I regret that this trip had to be cancelled, but feel it is in the best interest of the Nobility. - Fred
