Dear Parents and Caregivers Welcome back to Term 3. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

Bomber Command Memorial – report from Kendall Brown From the 19th June to the 7th July, I had the fortune to be one of two Air Cadets selected nationwide to attend the unveiling and dedication of a memorial to RAF Bomber Command by HM Queen Elizabeth II in London. The trip was absolutely fantastic, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and to be able to travel alongside 32 of our Bomber Command veterans from WW2 was an absolute privilege. As well as having the best two weeks of my life, it gave me a good chance to reflect on the heroic actions of the men and women that served in Bomber Command, and how they fought for the freedom that we are so lucky to have today.

Members of the NZ Delegation

The members of the official New Zealand Delegation were made up of 32 veterans, care staff provided by Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand, Defence Force personnel (mainly Army nurses) and myself along with CDT W/O Jordi Hoult, who is from Christchurch. We flew in the RNZAF’s 75th anniversary Boeing 757, having overnight stops in Darwin, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai and a refuelling stop in Sicily. On the flight in, I was very lucky to be able to go up to the flight deck and sit in the jump seat for the landing at RAF Brize Norton. It was really cool to see what the pilots did as they brought the plane in to land. We had around a week in England, so that gave us plenty of time to see the sights, do some shopping (lots of souvenirs) and attend the ceremonial services that were scheduled for us. We also had a visit to RAF Hendon, a huge air force museum located a

few miles out of London. It was quite emotional for the veterans, as they told us some fascinating stories of the missions they flew even as we were taking photos of the bombers they flew in.

Warrant Officers Kendall Brown & Jordi Hoult

If I were to pick a highlight of the trip, it would be the memorial itself, which took place at Green Park, five minutes from Buckingham Palace at 12 noon. It was a beautiful day, with temperatures exceeding 25 degrees, so all the Defence Force personnel were dripping in their dress uniform, while we cadets were lucky enough to just have long sleeved shirts and trousers! It was awesome to be in the presence of the highest royalty and her immediate family. There was also a flypast by five RAF Tornado G24s, and to top it off a one million poppy drop by Britain’s last airworthy Avro Lancaster Bomber, which I am sure sent shivers down the backs of most of the 6000-strong crowd, mine included! But what was really the best part of the memorial was to see the veterans finally acknowledged for their service after decades of controversy surrounding their incredible actions during the war. It was a very emotional time for many of them, as the memorial provided a fitting sense of release for them and many of their friends who did not make it back. I am forever grateful to the Unit Commander of No. 41 Squadron (City of Porirua) Air Training Corps, FLTLT Tristan Will, whose recommendation to the Commandant of New Zealand Cadet Forces helped me to get selected for this incredible opportunity. I have taken from this trip many great memories, and to be able to meet these veterans who fought for our freedom is something that I will never forget.

LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

French Department Nouméa Trip 2012 Just before the holidays another group of French students left for 10 days in Nouméa, the capital city of New Caledonia, one of France’s colonial remnants in the Pacific. There were 19 Year 11 and 12 students, accompanied by Mr Salter and Miss Kelly. The purpose of the trip was to take the classroom French the college students had spent three or four years building up and drag it screaming into the real francophone world! Almost everyone, I think, experienced first the nerves and the hesitation that come with trying a language out for the first time on native speakers – but everyone also experienced the satisfaction that comes when you are able to get things done in that language. Even if it is only to buy a baguette, or ask for the toilet! We flew out of winter, into… winter. But winter in Nouméa means temperatures in the early 20s, so no one needed their fleecies for the rest of the week. The first night was corridor surfing at the hotel, or walking along Anse Vata beach looking

for a light meal in one of the cafes. We saw old men playing pétanque by the beach, and wondered how outrageously expensive “Le Roof” restaurant was, perched over the water. Mornings were mostly spent at CREIPAC Language School where we shared classes (all in French!) with students from other NZ and Australian schools. In the afternoons we had activities about town. Nouméa passers-by will never forget Tawa College students hailing them from the Tschou-Tschou Train tour. We bought

picnic lunches from the supermarket and had a couple of these on the beach. Then there was the Museum, or shopping in town for souvenirs, or the Big Géant Supermarché Expedition, where the teachers filled their bags with cheese and pâté but the teenagers bought only Orangina and bubble gum. There was ordering McDonalds in French, or finding that ‘Quick’ is not fast food.

The weekend was spent doing what the host family had planned, so there were different experiences for some.

A highlight of the trip was the Amédee Island day excursion for snorkelling, lighthouse climbing and the beach. It was the coldest, wettest day in terms of weather, but everyone enjoyed it

anyway. There were a lot of ‘tricot rayé’ sea snakes on the beach digesting their meals, and the fish around the reef were big and plentiful. There was a great deal of photo posing by some

(no names), some hula dancing, some hula avoiding… It was a very successful trip and for me one of the small highlights was when I heard a student speaking to (a Kiwi) air hostess on the plane home: “Would you like an Anzac biscuit?” “Euh – oui, merci! Oh… did I say that in French?” AUSTRALS DEBATING

Congratulations to four volunteers - Nik Bain, Daniel Wrench, Calvin Jones, and Michael Kalpage –helping at Australs 2012 at Victoria University recently. This international debating tournament is “like a battlefield as they completely destroyed each other’s arguments. One minute

you were sure one team was going to win, the next the debate was turned upside down.” Monash dominated – being both sides of the Grand Final. “The event was a great learning experience and it provided skills and knowledge that will prove vital throughout life. I’ve definitely developed my debating skills. The adjudicators and debaters were encouraging and offered advice, and the debates were on contemporary issues - about the global community.” As the tournament provided 85 international teams – from New Zealand, India, Singapore, Australia – it’s unlikely to be back in Wellington anytime soon. So, congratulations to the guys for being there!

In week 8 of Term 3, 49 Art students spent a crazy fun-filled 30 hours straight working on their respective painting, printmaking, photography and/or design projects in A block. Most students also completed one or more A4 sections of a mural titled ‘Be a hero for a better world’. For completing the 30 hours, each student raised $50.00 in sponsorship for World Vision. More money was raised through the sale of art works produced during this time. In addition to this we are hoping to

sell the mural to raise more funds for World Vision projects in drought ridden Niger and Mali. To view the mural in colour, visit Trademe http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=493417037

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

On the last Friday of Term 2, the Tawa College Hall was transformed into the General Assembly of the United Nations as 80 Year 10 students took on the role of delegates representing different countries debating matters of international importance. The students hotly debated the future of the fictional African nation of Equatorial Kunduz with the goal of arriving at a resolution fixing its internal civil war, drought, and famine.

The activity helped build public speaking skills and an increased awareness of international issues. Many promising leaders of the future emerged with Samuel Godfrey representing Switzerland claiming the award for being the most influential delegate.

Right from the kick-off it was apparent that the 1st XV were not going to be overawed by the Colts. The score at half time was 10-3 in favour of the Colts. A number of penalties, a couple of tries to each side and a late red card saw the score reach 17-14 to the Colts with only 3 minutes to play. The College 1st XV decided that it was "all or nothing" and scored a well deserved try in the dying minutes of the game. College 19 Colts 18. The Don Furrie Cup remains with the Tawa College 1st XV. Big Sing National Finale Our Twilight Tones Chamber Choir has been selected to attend the Big Sing National Finale, making them one of the top 18 choirs in the country at secondary level. Huge congratulations to the students involved and especially to their director Mr Isaac Stone. The students involved will be attending this event from Wednesday 15 August to Saturday 18 August. We are lucky that this event is in Wellington this year so family and friends can go to the Wellington Town Hall and support our students. The students will have three public performances during the festival. Their first one is during session 2 of the festival, which begins at 4.30pm on Thursday August 16. The second is on the Friday evening during session 7 beginning at 6.30pm. Along with all the other choirs they will also present one item at the gala concert on the Saturday evening. This concert will commence at 6.30pm and includes a prize giving and a massed item performed by all the singers taking part. The Secondary Students Choir will also present a concert at 12.30pm on the Saturday. This will be the last chance to hear the current choir members sing together before a new choir is selected at the end of the year. There are two Tawa College students in this choir. During the day, entry to sessions is $5, in the evening $15 Adults and $10 for Children, and the gala concert is ticketed through Ticketek ($25/$15 before Ticketek fees are added on). LIBRARY

Now that we are into Term 3, it is becoming increasingly important that students deal with their overdue library loans. A few facts may help to give you some idea of the situation. Currently:

There are 1140 items on loan to students - 877 of these are overdue.

87 students are unable to borrow, due to very overdue items (due Term 1, 2012 or earlier).

Of the 87, 33 are in Year 11 and 26 are in Year 12.

There are still 29 items outstanding from 2011, 5 items from 2010, and 1 item from 2008.

At the end of July I will be suspending borrowing privileges for those students with items which were due back by the end of May; after that I will be sending out invoices for the replacement cost of these items. Can I please ask you to stress to your children (especially if they are Year 11 or 12) that they need to deal with their overdue items. It is very unfair to other students who may need these items. Many thanks for your assistance.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Girls in Computing On Tuesday 26th June the Digital technologies Department held a presentation for approximately 50 girls studying computing. The overall aim of the presentation was to increase the number of girls studying computing in senior classes and secondly to demonstrate career pathways with a focus on programming. Susan Weekes the Wellington Futureintech Facilitator brought one of her ambassadors to talk to the girls. Megan Heyward from Fronde Systems Group Ltd gave a wonderful talk about her studying at Otago University, the subjects she studied and her life as a first year programmer at Fronde.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION 2012

Classes for Term 3 start the week beginning 23 July. New classes this term include Beginner NZ Sign Language 1A, Portuguese Cooking, Writing Skills, Computer Essentials, Wood Carving, Cheese Making and Advanced Indian Cooking. Cheese Making is so popular that an additional class the following Saturday has been added to the programme. ESOL classes are offered on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for anyone wanting to improve their English Conversational skills or there is a Writing Skills class on Monday evenings for anyone wanting to write a story about their personal journey. If you know of anyone who is interested please let them know about the classes. For the second time this year the Parents as Driving Coaches seminar will be run on 7 August. This two hour session is very valuable for anyone who is teaching or about to teach a student to drive. If your student already has their restricted licence then it is important for them to attend a Defensive Driving course. A very successful team building evening was organised through Tawa College Community Education for a local group of primary school teachers. They met on a Friday evening, learnt how to cook a Chinese meal and then sat down to share what they had cooked. The tutor provided the food which made approximately six different dishes. This team building exercise can be arranged for any group using one of the Tawa College Community Education cooking tutors. If you don’t want to organise a group then why not attend one of the many cooking courses held during the week for Indian, Chinese, Italian or Portuguese cooking. If you are interested in a new craft then courses that may interest you include making a felt brooch, a felt scarf or felt hat or even take up patchwork and quilting or Raranga flax weaving. If the class you wish to attend is not offered or you are interested in taking a class please do not hesitate to contact the Coordinator Judith Havill [email protected] Further details of all classes can be found from the web site www.tawacomed.co.nz
