Yet, at the same time, I find comfort in the teaching of the Talmud, "Whoever mourns properly for Jerusalem will be rewarded by experiencing its rejoicing." Indeed, this dichotomy is revealed as Tisha B'Av is called a "Mo'ed", a holiday, in Megillas Eichah (1:15), and therefore Tachanun is not recited on Tisha B'Av or Erev Tisha B'Av during Mincha. Since Tisha B'Av falls on Shabbos this year and is observed on Sunday, the prayer of Tzidkascha Tzedek at Shabbos Mincha will not be said. May our proper observance of both the letter of the law and the spirit of the law during the Three Week period be a fulfillment of the Talmud's teaching and thereby make us worthy of rejoicing in the rebuilding of Bais Hamikdash and Jerusalem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ by Rabbi Simcha Hopkovitz Dear QJC Members & Friends, Thank you for your steadfast support ! A Thought For the Three Weeks Once again this year, I conduct a personal review of the Laws of Tisha B'Av and the entire Three Weeks period. I do so with a heavy heart because it is further proof of our prolonged stay in exile. Yet, at the same time, I find comfort in the teaching of the Talmud, "Whoever mourns properly for Jerusalem will be rewarded by experiencing its rejoicing."

Indeed, this dichotomy is revealed as Tisha B'Av is called a "Mo'ed", a holiday, in Megillas Eichah (1:15), and therefore Tachanun is not recited on Tisha B'Av or Erev Tisha B'Av during Mincha.

Laws of Tisha B’Av ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tisha B'Av (the 9th day of Av) is the day which saw the entire city of Jerusalem in the hands of the enemy and the Bais Hamikdash in flames. It has, therefore, become a day of mourning and fasting. Tisha B'Av is different from other fast days in that it begins at sundown of the 8th and continues to the night of the 9th. This year, the 9th falls on Shabbos and fasting is postponed to the following day. Thus the fastof Tisha B'Av begins Sat. evening July 25 and ends Sunday evening, July 26. Shoes and sandals containing leather may not be worn from 8:17 pm on Saturday until 9:02 pm on Sunday night. Whenever possible, work is curtailed and it is customary not to sit on chairs until midday (1:02 pm). It is forbidden to bathe; it is also forbidden to greet one another. Since study brings joy, it is suspended except for those segments on the Churban - destruction of the Bais Hamikdash and Jerusalem- and admonitions. When Tisha B'Av falls on Shabbos and is postponed until Sunday, the consumption of meat and wine is permitted as of Monday morning. On Sunday evening however, it is still prohibited. Bathing, washing clothing, and haircuts are permissible Sunday evening.

DINNER OVERVIEW ~ by Herb Schonhaut - 2015 Dinner Campaign Chair

The 72nd Anniversary Dinner was a happy, successful affair with over 130 people in attendance and all accommodated very nicely in the beautiful catering hall of The Young Israel of Hillcrest. Ari and Abie, the long-time exclusive caterers at the Young Israel and their staff did an excellent job providing a full course chicken dinner including salmon appetizer, soup and dessert. Thanks to Naomi Nussbaum-Antis and Gloria Grossman, while being honorees this year, for still doing the dinner chair work and all it entails. A beautiful Scroll of Honor was distributed to all thanks to Annette Browdy, dinner scroll chair and designer. Thanks to Miriam Selengut, Margy Cohen and Irina Gulyaev in the office, as well as Helene Rubenstein and Sol Friedman for successfully executing a myriad of task towards the event. Special thanks to Lillian Nelson for getting ads from local businesses. My appreciation is extended to Susan Lieberman and Jack Nussbaum for assisting me in the overall work of organizing everything for the Dinner. The over 4 hour event began at 5:00 pm with a beautiful reception where everyone got to mingle with old friends. Festivities continued with Cantor Aryeh Rendel’s rendition of the National Anthem and Hatikvah. Our President, Gedalyah Shatz, then welcomed everyone and expressed everyone’s joy in seeing Rebbetzin Grunblatt who had surprised us by returning from Baltimore after eye surgery just for this event. The presence of Eugen Gluck was also acknowledged. After a most eloquent description of our shul and the honorees, Gedalyah introduced our Morah D’Asrah, Rabbi Simcha Hopkovitz who presented a timely D’var Torah and spoke about the Sisterhood and its accomplishments. He then presented Dr. Gloria Rapoport with the Community Service Award, a beautiful tzedakah box, and spoke about her dedication to learning and service to the shul. Gloria responded very warmly and spoke about how much the shul has meant to her over the years and thanked everyone for the honor and for attending the Dinner. Presentations of roses were then made to Honey Berger as well as Rebbetzins Grunblatt and Hopkovitz. In the second part of the program, the 12 Sisterhood Officers Guests of Honor were seated in the front of the room as our elegant First Lady, Rifky Shatz gave a wonderful presentation about the importance of the Sisterhood. Rifky also mentioned the dedication of Honey Berger who has been active in Sisterhood since 1958 and has served as its President since 1973! She then presented each of the honorees with a beautifully framed certificate. Toni Gordon then spoke on behalf of the honorees, giving a brief history of the Sisterhood and its many contributions to the shul while also remembering former active members who are no longer with us. This was followed by an original song about the Sisterhood, containing entertaining rhymes about each honoree, performed by Herb Schonhaut, Jules Halpern, Jonathan Herz and Zev Schramm. A slide show video presentation prepared by Annette Browdy and Herb Schonhaut was shown while dinner was served; thanks to Jonathan Herz, Mario and Lorraine for their help in setting up the equipment. Everyone enjoyed seeing the many pictures of present and former members and the children who grew up in our shul. Eric Grossman and Josh Blustein sang special moving renditions of well-known prayers to their respective grandmothers and everyone joined in a round of simcha dancing while Dr. Flug and his son, who served as musicians, entertained us until the evening ended with all expressing their appreciation for a heartfelt enjoyable event.
