Message from the President

By Jerry Farmer, 94.5 ROXY, Chamber President

Summer is here! After an extremely long February we’re positioned to actually

see that mysterious yellow round thing in the sky again. Summer means one thing above all—barbecue! We’ve got two of them.

First, as we have for the last few summers, this month’s Forum will be an informal affair. An in-forum, if you will. Come on down to Woodland Creek Park at the

Lacey’s Community Center off Pacific Avenue and join in for a little bit of 2-B Barbecue—Burgers and Brots that is. The cost is just $5.00, the setting is in the picnic area, and it’s a great time to network with your Chamber friends and family.

For the full-on smokin’ real deal, it’s the first ever South Sound BBQ Festival coming up on Saturday July 9. It’s going to be an amazing affair with lots of professional vendors like Red Wind Casino, Adesso, Daddy O’s, Lucky Eagle Casino, Rub Dubs, Quinault Resort, Ricardo’s, and Little Creek Casino, with the Lacey Chamber selling grilled corn and liquid refreshments. There will be 16 backyard Joes, including community organizations like the Port and the City, that are scheduled to appear as well. Look for a special appearance by the Time Bandits of TV fame, and there are 21 community vendors participating and taking advantage of all the traffic Cabela’s has to offer.

Plus, there will be a wing eating contest sponsored by ACU to really kick up the fun, entertainment by Blues Redemption and Lacey’s own Chris Ward Band headlining, and a special appearance by the Lakefair princesses.

A big thanks to Al Eckroth for all his hard work getting things cooking. He’s had to pull the fat out of the fire more than once in this culinary and community endeavor and there’s no argument that he’s the best. Al assembled a great team and they have done an outstanding job putting together what

promises to be a great event and the first of many to come.

Thank you to Mike Thompson of Capital City Press who sponsored all the printed materials, and a very big thank you to Jason Hammeren, manager of Cabela’s, for providing the space and being the generous host for our event. Thanks, Al, and a big thank you to your team.

We’ve talked a lot this year about the partnerships that make the Lacey Chamber special. I’d like to take this opportunity to especially thank our most faithful partners—without whom this Chamber couldn’t function as well as it does—our ambassadors. They’re the people that keep us going, showing up at all the after-hours events, helping at the forums, and generally being the ambassadors of goodwill that make our Chamber strong. They are also the people that aren’t afraid to dig in and pitch in when and where needed, volunteering their time and efforts to make the rest of us look good.

A big thank you to all our ambassadors: Barbara St. John, Bonnie Vandver, Brent Walz, Caleb White, Erich Brown, Charlotte Dickison, Dawn Peterson, Diana Grantham, Janice Swain, Jeff Kopp, Joann Bell, John Bradburn, Kamarie Wilson, Madelin White, Mike Harris, Mike Wolfe, Pat Lenehan, Ray Foisy, Ross Irwin, Ryan Betz, and Tabitha Johnson. You can see them on our website at www.LaceyChamber.com. Or, of course, in person at so many of our networking events. Ambassadors meet the last Tuesday of the month at noon at Dirty Dave’s Pizza Parlor. Want to take advantage of all the Chamber has to offer? There’s no better place than the Ambassadors Committee—one of the many options for opportunity from your premier business resource, the Lacey Chamber of Commerce.

Welcome to summer! See you at our two barbecues.

As a new chapter opens in the history of the Lacey Chamber of Commerce, I

am thrilled and honored to have been chosen to lead this orga-nization in our mission of being your premier business resource. I am also excited to work with the outstanding professionals that make up the Chamber staff and the board of directors. As Cham-ber members you deserve the

best from your staff, and we stand ready to deliver outstanding service and value for you.

For those not already familiar with me, I have spent most of the past half dozen years managing banks. Prior to that I was fulfilling my entrepreneurial spirit as the owner of eight busi-nesses from Bellingham to Chehalis. With that background I understand the needs and concerns you have when it comes to improving your business and increasing sales and profit-ability. We will be looking at what the Chamber offers you and making changes to ensure you are getting the maximum value from your membership.

My vision for this first year has a number of priorities including resurrecting new member orientations and developing train-ing on methods and techniques for networking. I will con-tinually look for ways to save the Chamber money and work toward developing a reserve fund to prepare for the financial emergencies of tomorrow. Membership growth is another vital priority. Growth will happen as your excitement about the progress and offerings of the Chamber grows.

In order for that excitement to happen, I will need your help in my most ambitious project. That project is to gather the opinions and information needed to evaluate the current programs and committees offered by the Chamber and make sure they are in alignment with the needs and priorities of you, our members. There will be surveys and questionnaires for you to provide input, but the most exciting part of this (for me anyway) is that I will be visiting each member organiza-tion to personally discover what you want from your Chamber membership. I won’t say that I have all of the answers, but I will have enough questions that, together, we will forge a new and exciting Lacey Chamber of Commerce that will truly be “Your premier business resource.”

Military Affairs UpdateBy Carlene Joseph, Harborstone Credit Union, Military Affairs Committee Chair

The month of May was very busy on Joint Base Lewis McChord and I have to say

that your Chamber has been very active in support of our soldiers and Airmen.

Earlier in May, the 446th Airlift Wing hosted the Air Force Reserve Command’s “Tour for the Troops” program with Jay Leno on McChord Field. Prior to the show,

civic leaders attended a pre-reception at the LeMay Family Foundation and met Jay Leno in person. Special thanks to Col. William Flanigan, the commander of the 446th Airlift Wing, and LTC Anna Sullivan for sending invites to some of our business leaders in Lacey.

On July 21, the Lacey Chamber is having a picnic for the Air Mobility Command Rodeo home team. During the picnic Famous Dave’s will be on hand to provide the food for the fine Airmen of McChord Field. This is a Lacey Chamber event, so we need sponsors for the picnic. If you’re interested, please

contact me at [email protected]. The picnic will be held at Joint Base Lewis McChord’s Heritage Park.

Finally, we’re getting closer to finalizing the 3rd Stryker Brigade’s “Adopt-A-Unit” program. On June 29, the participating businesses and units within the 3rd Stryker Brigade will congregate at a “Meet and Greet” reception to meet for the first time. We’re still looking for a couple of businesses to adopt some of the units. If you’re interested, please contact me and you’ll be invited to attend. Should you decide to adopt a unit, you’ll be expected to form a reciprocal type of long-term relationship with your connecting unit. I have to specifically thank the City of Lacey, the Lacey Chamber of Commerce, Harborstone Credit Union, and the Lacey Subchapter of the Association of the United States Army for rolling up their sleeves to pull this program off. Once done, we’ll be implementing the same program in Puyallup and Tacoma to support the 2nd Stryker Brigade and Madigan Healthcare System, respectively.

As you can see, the Lacey Chamber is gearing up for an extremely busy summer. We hope you join us. Again, you can reach me at [email protected] to sponsor the Rodeo or to adopt a unit.

L to R: Jordan Haines from CoinForce.com and Jay Leno.

Our May 5:01 Surge was hosted by FASTSIGNS! We enjoyed seeing the latest and greatest machines and services that they have to offer. One of the new

signs they offer is a “vehicle wrap!” Check it and other signage options out online at www.fastsigns.com or visit them at 4127 Pacific Ave. Remember “Signs work when you can’t!”

Thanks again to Grace Kendall and all of her staff for inviting us in to their business and hosting a great networking event.
