CLUB NEWS

If you are unsure if your favorite club activities carry on at a normal schedule it

is time to check before you show up bright and early one morning to an empty

hall.

A couple of activities do happen in July. The July 1st “Tea Dance” will be

sponsored by the the Evergreen Club as part of of Courtenay’s Canada Day

Celebrations. The tea will take place at the Native Sons Grand Hall on Friday

July 1st and starts at 2pm. Music will be provided by the Georgia Strait Big Band

and its FREE ADMISSION. Cake and refreshments will be served. A second

July happening is the”Market Days Pancake Breakfast” on Saturday July 16th.

This always very popular Evergreen Club sponsored breakfast will be held in

the Conference Hall from 7:30am until 11am and still sells at $5 per person....

arguably the best breakfast deal in town.

August will be a fairly quiet month at the Evergreen but come September things

will once again get busy. A couple of special events to look forward to are the

Fall Garage Sale on Saturday September 17th and the annual Variety Show

presented by the Evergreen Choristers on Wednesday September 28th. As

for the garage sale, it’s time to start thinking about doing some summer de-

cluttering and making those unwanted items available for the sale....remember

that what’s junk to you is likely a treasure to someone else. The Variety Show

theme this year is “Happy Songs” and will most likely include many of your old

favorites. This is always a very popular show and always very well done by our

very own Choristers....get your tickets early as it will fi ll...$5 per person.

Volunteers from the Meet and Greet Singles Group were highlighted in last

months newsletter. They are a very active organization run very successfully

by those folks at the helm...congratulations to all the volunteers who make this

club work so well. There are 40 plus clubs within the Evergreen and it takes the

dedication of these types of people to keep them all active. If you feel you have

skills that will be a good addition to one or more of our many clubs the it may

be time for your leadership.....we’re ALWAYS looking for good people to get

involved.....

Time to send this copy to press....enjoy the wonderful Comox Valley summer

with all your family and friends.....the next newsletter will come out in late

August so we’ll see you all then.....and I’ll leave you with this little gem.....I

sent 10 puns to a number of my old friends hoping that at least one of the puns

would make them laugh....”NO PUN IN 10 DID”...........ADIOS...gk

The Camera club encourages members to expand their horizons as well as show

off their work by holding an internal competition every two months. We have a

set subject, albeit usually one with many interpretations. We each select 5 images

from those submitted and the 8 or 9 with the most votes are then displayed in the

Evergreen Lounge for a month. All those visiting the centre are able to vote for their

favourite. In May, our subject was ICE and 9 images were displayed. This month

we are featuring the both the fi rst and second place images. The fi rst place winner,

Winter Beauty taken by Dave Suther at Buckley Bay, is on the front page. The second

place winner, Frozen Puddle taken by Karen Isenor at Mt Washington, is on page 8..

they are printed). June sessions will

include taking pictures in less than

optimal conditions and taking picots

will displayed during the month of

July. Our Lightroom group continues

to meet before the regular meeting

and is looking at output modules.

We break from regular meetings

for July and August but have several

“drop in” photoshoots planned as

will have a fun time!

We are a welcoming, non-judgemental

group of beginner and experienced

players. The fi rst part of the session is

dedicated to easier songs/music, and

then followed up by music that can be

just a bit more challenging.

If you require more information about

our group please contact Howie at

[email protected]

Our only requirements are that you

love to sing and play the uke (or wish to

try it out), have a current membership

Can’t believe it but it is June already.

Seems the months just fl y by. We still

have a small group pf regulars who

come to play on Mondays and we

have some fun games. As soon as the

sun arrives we have some t.t. players

who drift onto the golf course and

others who tend their gardens.

Tuesday we had a new player, he

hadn’t played for a while but it didn’t

take him long to get his game back and

we had some really strong games.....

it was exhausting but fun. Had a nice

chat to Jack West a while ago he has

been a regular for many years. He is

not playing and we miss him, such

a good player. He is taking it easy

right now. Another player we miss is

Alex, he used to travel from Campbell

River and a very powerful player. He

has also decided to take a break and

watch the ocean.

If you are interested in playing we

meet Mondays 11.30 am to 1.30 pm

and Tuesday 12.30 pm to 3.30 pm.

Bats and balls are available and it is 75

cents per person for members.

Have you ever referred to or been

called a DUFFER? You probably

thought of an old man or even as a

form of endearment towards that

perhaps clumsy old man. But that’s

not what it was back in old England.

I’ll tell you all about it at the end of this

article.

Our last meeting in June was our wrap-

met for lunch in the lounge and then

proceeded upstairs for our usual

Volunteer Opportunities

BingoIt feels good to be back among those

I regard as friends, calling the bingo

session. I hope I don’t frustrate them

too much by not calling their numbers,

but I can only call what the machine

tells me.

Are you looking to enjoy a few hours

on a Friday aft ernoon? We would like

to see you. We start at 1pm and go

until 3pm.

Cards are only .50 each and are good

for all twelve games. As well we have a

50/50 tickets for sale, two for $1.

You’ll never send your grandkids to

college on the winnings, but I believe

the fun and camaraderie will more

than make up for that.

Look forward to seeing you.

Bob, Sue and Justin

1:00pm, Friday Sept 9th in the

Soroptimist Lounge is the next

meeting of the Computer Club.

Have a great summer!

There is a $1.00 drop-in fee.

Computer Club

Camera Club

The Camera club encourages members to expand their horizons as well as show

off their work by holding an internal competition every 2 months. We have a set

subject, albeit usually one with many interpretations. We each select 5 images

from those submitted and the 8 or 9 with the most votes are then displayed in

the cafeteria for a month. All those visiting the centre are able to vote for their

favourite. In May, our subject was ICE and 9 images were displayed. This

month we are featuring the both the fi rst and second place images.

The fi rst place winner, “Winter Beauty” taken by David Suther” at Buckley Bay,

is on the front page.

The second place winner, “Frozen Puddle” taken by Karen Isenor at Mt

Washington, is shown here:.

PM SHIFT FOOD SERVICE HOSTESS/HOSTS

This is a good place to meet new people and work alongside

another volunteer during a quieter time in the kitchen. We will

have some aft ernoon shift s to fi ll starting in September. Only want

a shift once a month? Twice? Or only to be a spare... we want

to talk to you! 1:00pm –3:00pm you will be scheduled to serve

customers, do kitchen duties and begin the shut down process. It

would involve staying past aft er 3pm to follow the full shut down

procedures list. Food Safe is preferred but not mandatory -

training is provided!

GARAGE SALE HELPERS

Our Fall Garage Sale Convenor, Nicky Arsenault, is

looking for a team of helpers with the upcoming Fall

Garage Sale. This is a wonderful fundraiser for the

Evergreen Club. Help may be needed with accepting

donations, the Friday set up, and the selling on the

day of the sale, Saturday September 17th. Many

hands make for light work! New to volunteering at the

Evergreen Club? This is the perfect event to come out

and give it a try.

Where is the next generation of volunteers at?Our beloved kitchen volunteers need new faces in the kitchen. You are able to

join the Evergreen Club at 55... So where are the ‘newbies’ at? Many of our

kitchen volunteers have been volunteeringt for a long time and we now need

new volunteers to step up and help in that natural turn over process.

Did you know Thelma Bird has devoted 39 years of volunteering to the

Evergreen Club Kitchen? She announced at the recent kitchen volunteer

meeting that it’s time for her to hang up her apron. We will miss her greatly!

Also, our Muffi n Hero volunteers are enjoying a much needed break this

summer from their early rising in order to open and prep the Evergreen Club

kitchen.

If you see Bea, Joe, Gail, Dennis, Danielle, Tom, Starr or Larry, give them big

thanks for volunteering throughout the year!

They too are always looking for new faces to volunteer and lighten the volunteer

scheduling.

Picture time and Q & A with our new Summer Kitchen Supervisor Alisha Tinga. She will join our food services and fi ll in the holes of the kitchen volunteers that

book off for July & August.

Q: I hear you’re a mom, Alisha, tell us about your family?

A: I have a 5 ½ year old son and a 3 year old daughter. Currently, I’m a stay

at home mom and I’m excited about getting to meet new people again! And

about new things other than Scooby Doo and Paw Patrol!

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

A: I love travelling and girl’s nights

out with my friends. I also have two

cats ‘Porsche’ and ‘Bella’. And when I

have the time, I love to sky dive!

Q: Any new plans this year?

A: I’m looking forward to taking a new

course in the fall. I’ll be taking the

Medical Lab Assistant Program.

Typically this time of year,

Things slow down a bit at the

Evergreen Club. It usually is seasonal

But, due to the transition of Susan’s

Retirement and the new

position, I’ll be around much more to

assist with all of the volunteering and

event needs. So check to see if my

offi ce door is open. I might just be at

my desk. For those of you that
