“Ride Season is in Full Swing” July-August 2018

Our 2018 riding season is in full swing and the Chapter has plenty of rides and fun events planned! We will continue to send our “alert” e-mails as the date of our events and rides approach to keep everyone informed of up-to-the-minute instructions and/or changes due to weather. It is always helpful (especially for Lisa) when members respond back to our e-mails even if you are unable to attend an event. The response helps in several ways. One, it tells me that you are receiving my e-mail and two, it is helpful when Lisa calls a restaurant or vendor to give then a head count. It is especially helpful when we are attending with a lot of members (which has been great…..thank you for participating). Also, Yeah or Nay’s are always helpful so we can keep a look out for those who are attending and when we are assembling at a meeting place before a ride. SO keep those e-mail responses coming, we appreciate the feedback.

What you may have missed in June Chapter happenings:On June 15th and 16th - John Van Deusen and Rick Reardon again put their teaching and riding skills to great use by teaching a Trike Riding Course class offered by NY District and hosted by Chapter D. The seminar portion was held at the Chittenango Fire Station and the range exercises were held at the North Syracuse Baptist Church in North Syracuse. On June 13th , Chapter D held its regular gathering at RFH Hide-a-Way. We had 20 members and 1 guest attend. Lisa and I would like to thank all those who were able to attend the gathering as your input and suggestions are so important to the success of our events and rides throughout the year. On June 17th, we had our annual Father’s Day Brunch at the Linklaen House in Cazenovia. This year’s group was a bit smaller than we have had in the past, but, the fine food and friendship were great. This is always a popular event. We want to thank Pam and John Van Deusen for leading us on a nice ride through Southern Madison County after the brunch. The weather was simply perfect for a ride! Finally to end out the month of June our monthly Dinner Ride took us to Tabatha’s Family Tree Restaurant in Baldwinsville! Tabatha’s has been a long time sponsor of Chapter D and she is always happy to see the group. I should mention that the food always has that home cooked touch! And of course the desserts are awesome! Thank You Tabatha’s for being a sponsor for Chapter D-NY!

As we jump into the month of July, our Chapter will celebrate our Country’s birthday on the 4th with an Ice Cream Ride and a ride through the Ilion Gorge. At our June gathering we had a great show of hands from those who are planning to participate. I have laid out an exciting ride through the Mohawk Valley that will take us through the Ilion Gorge to The Ice Cream Station in Ilion, approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. Our return will take us along the Historic Erie Canal. Please check your e-mails for specific information on meeting place/time, kickstands up time etc.

I am working on our route of travel down and back from Newburgh and hope to have it completed shortly. I will send out the maps and itinerary as soon as I have it completed. Here are the arrangements we have at this time:

• Lodging at the Newburgh/Stewart AFB/West Point Days Inn, 915 Union Ave., New Windsor. Call 1-845-564-7550.

• Departure Friday 17th: The plan will be to leave mid-morning (exact time TBD). Lunch at Brooks BBQ before traveling thru the Catskill Mountains. Arriving at hotel late afternoon. Dinner at a near-by restaurant and some social time back at the hotel.

• Saturday 18th: Hudson Valley/Bear Mountain Ride: Saturday will be spent riding the Hudson River and Bear Mountain. Lunch and Dinner options to be discussed.

• Sunday 19th: Motorcyclepedia Museum/Chapter X Gathering: the motorcycle museum opens at 10:00am, a small fee of $11 is required. We will tour the museum, attend Chapter X Gathering (note: Dash-4-Cash points) and depart for home following the Gathering. Plan to arrive back home late afternoon.

August 25th- (a Saturday) has been selected as the date for our annual Chapter D Progressive Dinner ride. We have hosts for the main course and the dessert course. We are currently looking for a host for the salad/first course. Please feel free to e-mail Lisa at [email protected] if you would be willing to host our first course for the progressive dinner. Lisa and I want to extend our gratitude to each and every one of you for your continued support and participation. Without you there would be no Chapter D NY and without your comments, concerns and suggestions we would have a very dull ride/event calendar. We are always looking for volunteers to lead and organize a ride. If you see something on the schedule that you would be willing to plan a route and lead the ride, please let me know and we will work out any details that work for you. We all like to ride and attend events! Let’s not make a few do all the work.

Riding in the Rain

I don't know of anyone who seeks out rain in order to go ride in it...but with the correct skills, gear and mindset, riding in the rain is not that big a deal. I'll be riding around 500 miles this weekend, and from the looks of the forecast, my ride home will be many hours through constant downpour. With the miserable, wet weather we've had this spring, this is nothing new.

There's nothing worse than being wet, cold and miserable when riding. Not only that, it can be absolutely dangerous - the distraction of being miserable, plus the very real threat of hypothermia (even during warm temperatures) can sap your strength and divert your attention. That's why I go out of my way to carry quality rain gear with me that I know will keep me dry, even in the worst weather. I can remember on a recent trip to Canada, when I pulled up to the border crossing, the rain was absolutely pouring. The border agent took one look at me, shook his head, as in "you're crazy to be riding in this," and waved me through. The thing is - I was warm and dry!

Rain-slicked roads present an extra challenge for the motorcycle rider. Traction is severely decreased, particularly during the first portion of a rainstorm, when dry, oil-covered roads are just starting to get wet. The new 2018 GL1800 has a "rain mode" that dampens throttle response to help, but a gentle touch on the throttle and especially the brakes is prudent for any rider.

Rain can be tricky but with proper preparation and precautions it can be dealt with effectively. A good rule of thumb is to reduce the number of surfaces you are looking through. If you are going to use a visor on a helmet, then try to see over the windshield. The road conditions will play a part in this. As mentioned, the oil (center) lane will become slippery, especially in the first 30 minutes or so of the rain. Painted striping will become more of a hazard. Additionally, if the road being ridden is paved, the car tracks in the road may have become troughs, which will hold water. I have ridden on roads where these tracks have held in excess of 1½” of water. As you are aware of this, it can be dealt with, just keep in mind that water can hide potholes. I personally still ride in the left tire track, I get a bit more water thrown at me, but I find less potholes then the right tire track. Know your tires! Hopefully, you keep an eye on your tread wear at all times. The more your tires are worn, the easier it is to hydroplane. I have floated several times in heavy rain and it isn’t fun. As a side note: If you are riding a trike, trike’s often will hydroplane easier than two wheelers. Most important, don’t be in a hurry and know your skill level. If you feel you are getting to the height of your current skill set, pull over or find a road where you can travel slower.

….…to our Chapter MEC....

Besides calling NEW or PROSPECTIVE members or calling you, our Ch D members, to remind you that your GWRRA dues are up for renewal, I also attempt to bring some FUN into the Chapter. It's up to the Chapter MEC to make contact with the members and make sure they feel welcomed at our gatherings and/or chapter events. This month I decided to add some FUN into our newsletter as I really didn't know what else to write about. This way some of our members who don't attend our gatherings regularly ~ missing out on hearing my jokes, will be able to enjoy a little FUN when reading our newsletter! Here goes...
