Protecting the bridgeOver three days in late June and early July, resident Tim Bast (right) and Tim Sylvester (left), with a hand from Teresa Trawitzke, stained the north bridge.

Using brushes, rollers, and paint mitts, they applied 10 gallons of semi-transparent stain. The laborious process included a lot of time on ladders sunk in lake muck.

The high-quality stain should protect the wooden bridge from the elements for 3 or 4 years, said Bast, a professional painter. It also darkened the wood, so the two bridges are now closer in color.

Happy summer! It's a busytime around Tuckaway. Thereare lots of projects going on.Some are being done bycontractors and some byvolunteers. A big project, literally, was the staining of thenorth bridge.

More projects are detailed inTeam activity.

In the area describes a somewhat unnoticed (I guess until now) and underused hiking and biking trail in Franklin on Rawson Avenue west of Highway 100.

You'll also meet neighbors Dean and Jodi Paprocki, who have done a good share of volunteering over the years.

You don’t have to go far to enjoy nice summer evenings. Two nearby beer gardens offer food, live music, and, of course, beer (and other beverages). Summer is always a great time for traveling and also a good time to clean the car, which is made easier with a few Hot tips.

Meet your neighbors

Dean and Jodi Paprocki

Both Dean and Jodi have a history with Tuckaway Shores going way, way back.

“I watched them dig the hole for this lake,” said Dean. “I grew up in Greenfield. Working construction, we’d take our lunch break and watch them move dirt.”

“My parents moved here in ’85,” said Jodi. “When I left after high school, I knew one day I’d be back.” And in 2007, she came back. She bought a unit in Pier 4, and a year later, Dean moved in with her. They were married in 2017. Together, they have three grown children and three grandchildren.

Their careers keep them busy. Dean has been with FedEx for more than 25 years. Jodi spent 31 years with Aurora Healthcare but joined Walt’s Petroleum Service last year. Her company recently renovated the 7-Eleven gas station at the corner of 76th Street and Rawson Avenue.

Both are also active here at Tuckaway Shores. “We just love living on the water,” said Jodi. She serves as secretary with the Pier 4 homeowners group and often lends a hand to the Landscaping Team. And you can frequently find Dean repairing piers or fixing benches around the lake.

Team activityThe Board has created four teams, each with a specific focus, to help the Tuckaway Shores community. If anyone is interested in joining a team, please contact that team’s leader. Here is a short update on team activities:

Architectural Control (headed by Karen Grishaber)After many meetings, several walks around the property, and lots of emails, the Maintenance & Repair and Standards Guide is finally completed. Copies were emailed or mailed to all owners. Any future updates will be posted on the website and distributed to owners.

Finance (headed by Dawn Jasper)The team will review both the operating budget and the reserve study, as it relates to the capital budget, and provide recommendations to the Board prior to its annual budget meeting in August.

Landscape (headed by Annie Saqr)Sue Czerwinski, Rob Grede, Eddie Gunther, Teresa Trawitzke, and five Board members assisted in spreading mulch around the property, which saved the Association close to $4,000. In July, our tree service will trim 25 trees and remove 3 dying ones.

Towards the end of July, the landscapers will replace dead bushes, place additional stone, spruce up the main entrances, and tackle other issues identified in the spring walkaround.

Silt, originating from the RV lot, is flowing into the lake. We’re working with our landscape vendor to identify possible solutions.

Maintenance & Repair (headed by Candy Pegoraro)The hand-rail rope on the small island bridge was replaced. (The bridge will be replaced next year.)

The gazebo sinks were secured to the walls, and plumbing for the drains fixed to eliminate leaks. Shortly, downspouts around the property will be extended and then dirt added to low areas.

Rotting posts were replaced in a decorative fence blocking a 10-foot dropoff.

Efforts are under way to add the last number of cleats to the docks for securing water toys.

Fireplaces needing minor repairs will be handled on some Saturdays to avoid weekday scheduling.

Island careWith the warm weather, our island is getting plenty of use. Thanks to Carl Zaar, who maintains the beach and gazebo. He is also watering the potted plants and hostas that were planted by volunteers on the island this spring. They are looking good!

In the areaIf you’ve ever wondered what’s on Rawson Avenue going west past Highway 100, you’ll find the city’s appropriately named City of Franklin Hike and Bike Trail. The trail isn’t the most scenic or very long, but you’ll be traveling over a historic piece of property. The trail was originally a rail line over which electric streetcars ran from Milwaukee to East Troy. Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company operated streetcars on the line from the early 1900s to the 1950s. Today, the East Troy Railroad Museum operates restored streetcars over 7 miles of track at the end portion of the line. The paved trail begins at Rawson Avenue between Forest Home Avenue and North Cape Road. It runs 1.5 miles across St. Martins Road and then heads west, where it connects with the Muskego Recreation Trail. The Muskego trail runs another 6.5 miles over the rail right-of-way through Muskego to Big Bend. It is composed of stone and dirt areas.

You can park at Ken Windl Park, at Rawson and North Cape, or off St. Martins Road. Dogs are allowed on the trail but horses are not.

Go to a garden partyOn a warm summer evening, there is often no better a combination than beer, barbecue, and music. And two nearby parks offer pleasurable outdoor venues where can enjoy all three.

Open Thursdays 5–10 p.m., Croatian Park Beer Garden is just a mile south on 76th Street. The beer garden features its own craft beer, Croatian Park Ale, an imported Croatian beer, Karlovacko Pivo, other craft beers, and Miller products. It also serves wine, water, soft drinks, and mixed drinks.

Food includes Ćevapčići (a type of kebab), Croatian nachos, burgers, sausages, and hot dogs. Various bands provide live music. The beer garden is open into September. It is cash only and has an ATM onsite. You can check out the music schedule at croatianparkbeergarden.com.Whitnall Park Craft Beer Garden offers a wide variety of craft beers on tap, as well as cider, hard soda, wine, and nonalcoholic beverages. If you purchase a glass there, you can bring it back for refills at a reduced price. It also serves food and snacks, with a fish fry available on Fridays. You can also bring in your own food and nonalcoholic beverages.

The beer garden is open Wednesday through Friday 4–10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (last orders are at 9 p.m.) into October. Musicians play 5–8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. It accepts cash or credit cards. Profits go toward the funding of park projects. It is located at 8831 N. Root River Parkway, and more info is available at whitnallbeergarden.com.

Hot tipSummer driving can be a trip to the beach or a cross-country vacation. And car interiors can get pretty gunked up along the way. So here are a few tips for cleaning some of the worst spots. Air vents and cup holders are hard to clean and immune to vacuuming. For air vents, try blowing out the dust with canned air. If that doesn't work, use a plastic knife covered with a thin cloth to get the dust out. An old makeup brush may also work.

To clean cup holders, put an old sock over the bottom of a travel cup, spray it with household cleaner, and twist. That should get a lot of the grime out. To clean along the edge, scrape with a wooden barbecue skewer or cotton swab.A vacuum only gets so much dog hair off the seats. You can try a lint/pet hair roller, but wrapping masking tape or duct tape around your hand (sticky side out is best) and going over the seats is just as effective if not more so.

Also, make sure you replace the car’s cabin air filter at least once a year. They can get pretty gross, and it usually only takes a few minutes to do.
