At our recent High School Graduation Ceremony, students told us what memories or significant learning experiences they will take with them to college. Most of them spoke about what TEE means to them. Here are some excerpts:
"My family and I have been members of Temple Emanu El since I was in kindergarten . . . and (it) has always been a place for me to feel at home. Numerous programs and community service activities have taught me more than I could ever learn in a classroom." …...Hannah Caplan, daughter of Leah & Lee Caplan "My parents . . . never pushed us to go to Hebrew school or to become a madricha on Sunday mornings. Me standing here today at our graduation service is my choice. Temple Emanu El has over the years made this an easy choice for me." …...Alison Kabo, daughter of Kira & Vitaliy Kabo
Aren't these comments reason enough for each of us to step up and do just a little more than our fair share to ensure the future of Temple Emanu El in the lives of our families? To discuss your gift, please contact Renee Higer, 216/454-1209 or Laura Leventhal, 216/219-3398.
Today’s the day I take my stand, the future’s mine to hold.
Commitments that I make today are dreams from days of old. I have to make the way for generations come and go.
I’ll have to teach them what I’ve learned so they will come to know. ~Singer & Songwriter, Debbie Friedman z’’l

The Charitable IRA Rollover
Is Back for 2013!
Did you know that you can reduce your taxes for 2013 by making a charitable gift from your IRA to Temple Emanu El? As part of the tax legislation enacted earlier this year, individuals who are 70 1/2 or older can make a charitable gift of up to $100,000 from their IRA to qualifying charities free from income tax. Additionally, a charitable IRA gift qualifies for your 2013 required minimum distribution, permitting you to lower your income and taxes this year while supporting our synagogue. To learn more, contact Renee Higer at 216-454-1209.

BROTHERHOOD BEAT
By now I hope you’ve heard that Temple Emanu El’s Brotherhood received the STAR Award from Men
of Reform Judaism (MRJ). This recognizes the wide variety of programming we did in 2012. It is great
recognition. I went to Florida as Temple Emanu El Brotherhood’s delegate and accepted the award on our behalf. I
want to thank a special donor who made it possible for me to attend the MRJ Biennial Convention and receive the
award. The convention was a great learning opportunity from which I brought back interesting ideas while, at the
same time, share our success stories.
However, I find it even more meaningful when one of our congregants comes up to me or another
Brotherhood member and thanks us for what we are doing. Our achievements cannot be accomplished without
those of you who bought a Cleveland Browns Football Square; attended an educational program, Sports Night, or a
dinner; helped cook for the religious school and, of course, became a member. Without this support TEE Brotherhood could not
exist. I hope this year to have a record number of Brotherhood members. If you have not sent in your membership and participation
form, please do so.
In the last Brotherhood Beat I mentioned building and supporting Kehillah, community. I made it a theme over the last few
years to discuss, learn and explore the Cleveland community, from general and Jewish perspectives. Brotherhood’s annual breakfast
meeting featured Joe Crea, The Cleveland Plain Dealer Food Editor. The best summation – he was great. The morning discussion
included how Cleveland is blessed with great restaurants, ethnic establishments and jewels like the West Side Market.
A few days later, 20 of us went on a tour of Cleveland Jewish history. In visiting the old neighborhoods, I realized that the
synagogues were built within the communities. The Jewish community existed in one or two neighborhoods. Today, we are spread
out. Our Temple has become our community. It is where we come together for more than just prayer and High Holy Day services.
We come together for fun, learning, teaching, to comfort, and so much more; ideals that are representative of Brotherhood.
Hopefully in August, we will be watching our Cleveland Indians at the top of the standings. In September, the Ushers will be busy
with High Holy Days. That same month we will have tour of Cleveland Whiskey. Of course, you’ll receive your Cleveland Browns
Squares form in late July. Get your square early as we have had to turn away participants.
In the upcoming months, Brotherhood will be planning some great events with Women of Temple Emanu El, TEMTY and
other constituent groups. If you have an idea please pass it along to me, Pam Richards, Nancy Kalski-Neese, Adam Krantz, or other
constituent group leadership. Brotherhood, like other TEE groups, is committed to making our community the best around. Any
questions or comments please email [email protected].
L’Shalom,
Mark Bailin, President
Summer? Spring? Winter? I’m not exactly certain what season we are “enjoying” right now (this is
Cleveland, after all), but regardless, the Women of Temple Emanu El are already gearing up with activities for
the Summer and Fall. Dinner Bunch (4th Thursday monthly and Mystery Circle (3rd Thursday monthly)
continue during the summer, so watch for upcoming notices. Contact Linda Atkinson (440/461-0111) or Helen
Weisler (440/449-5504) regarding Mystery Circle and Gene Phillips (440/445-0379) about Dinner Bunch.
WOTEE is in the early planning stages of joint activities with Brotherhood – we want to take advantage of
Cleveland’s wonderful museums! On August 25th, from 1:30 pm-4:00 pm, we will hold a Baking Kickoff to
freeze pastries and cookies for TEE Onegim; registration will be open the first of August. Our annual
Membership Tea is scheduled for October 6th, from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mark your calendar now and be sure to pay your
membership dues early so you can join us; membership applications were mailed June 30th. We are planning a wonderful event, so
you don’t want to miss it.
Enjoy the summer months, re-bond with your children, and look ahead to working together to better our TEE family and
community.
L’Shalom,
Pam Richards, President

18 VOICES SING KOL NIDRE
The secrets of a sacred chant from those
who have been touched by it.
Produced and directed by Allen Oren
Selichot 5773 Selichot are penitential poems and prayers, especially those said in the period leading up to the High
Holy Days, and on Fast Days. God's Thirteen Attributes of Mercy are a central theme throughout these
prayers.

Israeli Style Dinner 6:15 p.m.
Movie Screening 7:15 p.m.
Reception 8:30 p.m.
Service 9:00 p.m.
Dinner: $18.00 per person
This film explores the Kol Nidre, the most sacred prayer in Judaism, that begins its holiest day of Yom
Kippur. The Kol Nidre's words have caused centuries of persecution, but its poignant melody has
enthralled generations of Jews and non-Jews and saved the prayer from itself. The film tells the Kol
Nidre story impressionistically through the tales and anecdotes of those who have been touched by it,
whether they be top experts on the chant or just those who have been changed by chanting it.
