President’s Column

At this time of the year it’s easy to write a column, as the chapter has been bustling with activities.First up on the list is to thank our Driving Events Chairman, Pat Delany. Dave, his assistants, and driving instructors, put together three great schools at Lime Rock Park. In case you missed the days at Lime Rock there’s still plenty of time to register for the school in Palmer, MA, coming up in October. Our first Street Survival School was another successful event. Dave Ortoli, with a host of volunteers from both our Chapter as well as from Consumers Reports’ staff, did a great job. The weather had the potential to be a real spoiler, with the rain that had been expected, but the precipitation held off for another great day in Colchester. In addition, Dave put on another Adult Car Control event at the CR facility as well. Our first Ice Cream Social of the year, in Greenwich, didn’t go very well because of some iffy weather. However, Dave Mucciacciaro put together our second successful Ice Cream Social in Watertown at Carvel’s (see article). Dave was disappointed at the lack of attendance, which may have been due to the change to a Monday event, instead of our usual Thursday socials, but fun was had nonetheless. Not to be left out are Roger and Jackie Chartier, who put together another successful Show ‘n Shine picnic at Wickham Park in Manchester. At one point I counted 25 cars on the grass! Thanks again to you both. Some of you may have seen the recent advertising we had done for a new DZ editor. This was because we had to replace Danielle Cartolano, who had to resign from her position as editor due to professional and personal commitments. Thanks to Dani for the job she did over the past couple of years. We are pleased to announce that our search was successful and we have appointed Jason Wisniowski as our new editor. Originally hailing from Western, MA, Jason now calls West Hartford home. A lifelong BMW enthusiast, he still remembers the day his father brought home a pristine e23 for his mother in 1984. Inheriting that car as his first started his obsession with the Roundel, later to be followed by a couple e46s and his current e90. Aside from BMWs, he loves playing guitar, hi-fi audio, and downhill skiing. Welcome Jason, and we look forward to seeing your work when this issue is published. In all of the above cases, what made the events successful was the time that people volunteered towards putting on the events. Why not join us as a volunteer as well?! After all, it’s your club too!

Housatonic River Brew Tour August 4th

Just the thing for a Saturday afternoon in August. We’re planning on a tour which will start in Sheffield, MA and end about 100 miles later at Stratford, CT. This August 4th event will start at noon at Big Elm Brewing in Sheffield and approximately follow Rte. 7 and the Housatonic River south to Long Island Sound. We’ll make some intermediate stops at other breweries along the way and then end at the Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford. The trip should take about 5 hours, which will allow plenty of time after the tour to linger at Two Roads Brewing. Check our website and Facebook site for further updates as we get closer. Or email me, Willy Wiley, at [email protected]

On the Silver (Wind)screenWe are excited to announce another Chapter Drive-In Movie Night! Dave Mucciacciaro is in the planning stages for what’s sure to be an enjoyable evening for all. The movie night will be held at Pleasant Valley Drive-In Theater in Barkhamsted, CT., around 6pm. While a final date is still being determined via a poll on the Chapter’s Facebook group, what we can tell you now is that it will be held on a Saturday in July. Once we receive an overwhelming choice on a date, we’ll be updating the event on Facebook, as well as sending a blast email out to the Chapter. Dave plans to bring along a jobsite radio to pipe in the movie’s audio so those that wish to stretch their legs outside of their cars can do so. For those that want to watch from outside their cars, we’d ask that you bring your own seating, and other necessities for comfort (i.e., bug spray, blankets, etc.).Stay tuned to our Facebook group, and don’t forget to vote for your preferred date, or email Dave at [email protected] with your choice. As more details become available we’ll communicate them to you all, and we look forward to having you join us for a memorable evening under the stars.

ENTER TO WIN This Great Drawing! for a One-Day M School; and a leather bound book – Heroes of BavariaThe Connecticut Valley Chapter (CVC) has two items to give away to its membership. These items were given to us by the BMW CCA Foundation as a thank-you for our chapter’s support of the Foundation. Our Board of Directors decided to make this an event participation drawing. This means that every time you participate in a Chapter event AND legibly sign the guest book, your name will be entered for a chance to win one of these two prizes.

The rules are simple: 1. You must be a Connecticut Valley Chapter member at the time of event participation and you must be a chapter member at the time of the drawing. 2. You must legibly sign the guest book at each of the events you attend in order to have your name added to the drawing. In the case of a driver school event, the registration list and attendance that day will be considered the same as signing the guest book at the other chapter events. 3. Every time you participate in a Connecticut Valley Chapter event your name will be included. This means you have one chance to win for every event you have participated in.The more events, the more chances. So, come on out to CVC events for a chance to win one of these items.

Drawing to take place at the September 9th 2018 John Bisset Memorial Humpa Picnic.

The Prizes: Free registration for 1 Club Member in a one-day M School at either BMW Performance Center (travel expenses not included). Certificate expires February 1, 2019.

A collectible limited-edition copy of Heroes of Bavaria book.

Whether this will be your first Humpa Picnic or forty-fifth, this is a must-attend event. We’ll have German food, beer, BMW’s, door prizes, and lots of socializing.

The event is held rain or shine Sunday, September 9th 2018 at JB Williams Park in Glastonbury, CT. Gates open at 11am and food will be served around noon.

The Connecticut Valley Chapter’s June Ice Cream Social was held at Carvel Ice Cream in Watertown on Monday, June 11th. George Tsioflikis, the owner of G’s Burgers and Carvel, was gracious enough to section off an area of their parking lot so that the attending BMWs could park together.

Although the weather played along, the turnout was a little on the light side. I believe this was due to the combination of a lack of advertising and the fact that it was held on a Monday. Historically, these ice cream socials have been held on a Thursday, but a scheduling conflict necessitated the date change. The members who stopped by enjoyed chitchatting about HPDE’s, keeping their cars clean, and as always, the delicious ice cream. A special thank you to George  for accommodating us again. We will certainly be back, hopefully with a bigger following next time! Keep your eyes peeled, and taste buds excited, for more ice cream socials over the coming months.

The ICON: 50 Years of the 2002As many of you are hopefully aware, in March of 2002 the BMW Car Club of America formed the BMW CCA Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charity, however, there is still a great deal of unawareness as to just what the Foundation is and does. You’ve probably heard of The Tire Rack Street Survival Program, especially since our Chapter has been holding these teen driving schools almost since inception of the program. That program is currently in the very capable hands of Dave Ortoli, with help from a wonderful group of volunteers and driving coaches, and great support from Consumer Reports in Colchester, CT. However, The Tire Rack Street Survival Program is only one arm of the Foundation, albeit perhaps the most publicly recognized. In addition, the Foundation houses a library, archives, and a museum, and also boasts a conservation and preservation program. For purposes of this article, I would like to focus on the museum. Over time, the museum has either acquired or accepted, on loan, a wonderful collection of BMW cars, artwork, brochures, and memorabilia, basically all things BMW-related. However, it wasn’t until last year that they took on the task of their first major exhibit, titled Heroes of Bavaria. I know that a few lucky members of the Connecticut Valley Chapter had the opportunity to visit the exhibit during its 8-month showing, and it was an amazing collection of BMW Motorsports history, with a focus on BMW’s participation in racing in the U.S.Fast forward, and The Lemay, America’s Car Museum located in Tacoma, WA, which entertains approximately 125,000 visitors a year, inquired about, and received approval to transfer a portion of the exhibit to their space under the same Heroes of Bavaria branding. So, how do we follow something that special? Well, firstly, the Foundation made some facility improvements: better and more efficient lighting, new ceiling paint, and more wall slats to better make use of wall space. Then they set about finding the right group of stock, modified, and race-specific BMW 2002s (and their variants) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic BMW. Appropriately titled, this year’s exhibit is The ICON: 50 Years of the 2002, Presented by The Werk Shop. The ICON Exhibit had its grand opening on Friday, May 18th, in conjunction with The Vintage weekend down in Hot Springs, NC and opening day was sold out, with all 500 available tickets sold in advance, and perhaps another 30 walk-ins, as well. While there were some great cars to see in the parking areas outside, the real eye candy was inside the Foundation. Museum Curator Michael Mitchell and Foundation Executive Director Scott Dishman, welcomed the BMW enthusiasts, many of whom came early and stayed late, due to the three guest speakers interspersed throughout the day. The first speaker was Jackie Jouret, who many of you will know from Bimmer Magazine, but who also now writes for Roundel. She authored a wonderful commemorative book on the Heroes exhibit that was so well received that she is back to do the same for The ICON collection. A bit later, Roundel’s own Hack Mechanic, Rob Siegel, spoke about his relationship with Louie, one of the more “patina-ed” ‘02s on exhibit. The final speaker was Adrian Mitu, an amazing artist from Romania, who paints with some unusual mediums, including coffee. Adrian and his wife were on hand to unveil his latest work, Blue Hero, a pictorial history of the life of motorsport legend Jochen Neerpasch.12 ... DZ v46no3

Of course, there were also the cars - a collection of 27 of some of the finest 2002s you can imagine, each with wonderful signage highlighting the significance and history of the car. If you are traveling anywhere in the vicinity of Greer, SC between now and the end of January, I highly encourage you to stop in. You can visit this wonderful exhibit, which is open Monday through Friday, and also witness what the Foundation has accomplished in only 16 years, with donations from generous BMW CCA members and other wonderful sponsors.

I mentioned Jackie’s books earlier - if you are interested, soft cover editions of both The Heroes and The ICON book are available for $50 each, either in the Foundation gift shop or online at bmwccafoundation.org or also at amazon.com.

There are also some other exhibit-related items, such as T-shirts, polos, and hats available through the gift shop as well. Additionally, a lovely, limited edition hardcover version of The ICON book (limited to 300 copies) is available as a gift to anyone making a donation of $500 or more to the Foundation. For those planning to attend Oktoberfest in Pittsburgh, the Foundation booth in the vendor area will be stocked with all these items, as well.

Finally, for those who might be interested in a brief “virtual” tour of the exhibit, here is a link to a short YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otfc2pGII5k&t=33s

The Connecticut Valley Chapter should be proud to be one of the top chapters in support of the Foundation, both in the number of Tire Rack Street Survival Schools we have held over the years, and also through financial support. If you are able to visit, you should make it a point to look for our Chapter’s brick on display in the museum.

The ICON: 50 Years of the 2002

Upon entering the museum, visitors are first greeted by some of the more “stock” cars in the exhibit.

A wonderfully stock 1600, owned by Friends of the Marque, Scott & Fran Hughes

Rob Siegel’s 2002, Louie, shows a bit of patina

The 2002 simply known as “Yale’s Car” formerly owned by past Roundel Editor, Yale Rachlin.

Some of the variants on display: a cabriolet (closest), a Bauer cabriolet, and a 2002 touring, among others.

Alpina modified cars were also present, in two of the more lively “70s” colors.

Of course, the 1600 and then the 2002 would never have been possible if not for the Neue Klasse cars that preceded them.

And, if you’re planning a picnic getaway, why not bring your 2002 trailer with you to bring all the goodies?!

14 ... DZ v46no3

Of course, where there are BMWs, there are racing BMWs.

Including the famous Miller & Norburn #64 once raced by Nick Craw, accompanied by an Alpina racecar

How about Terry Sayther’s way-cool 2002 tribute to the Calder Art Car?

Besides the cars, some of the other 2002-related items on display included some wonderful period advertising.

Romanian Artist Adrian Mitu was on hand to unveil his latest work and was wonderfully engaging with the guests.

Adrian’s art from last year commemorated BMW’s 100th Anniversary.

While this year’s reveal was a tribute to the life of Jochen Neerpasch.

And finally, if visiting the Foundation, be sure to seek out our Chapter’s brick!
