PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back for Term 2 which promises to be another busy one as we enter cooler weather and prepare for a myriad of festivals and events.

Pennant Hills High School to stage Matilda The Musical I am extremely excited to officially announce that we have secured the rights to stage Roald

Dahl’s Matilda The Musical in Term 1, 2020. The process for auditions and rehearsals will begin later this year.

We are very fortunate to have the production team from last years’ hit musical Oliver! on board and we welcome Mr Courtney Cassar back as the director.

Details regarding the information evening scheduled for Week 9, Tuesday 25 June and auditions scheduled for next term will be published in future editions of Jumbunna. We look forward to another entertaining and successful Pennant Hills High School musical extravaganza.

Federal Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall After the great success of our BBQ and Cake Stall at the NSW State Election, our hard-working P&C have once again committed to the democratic process and will be holding a BBQ and Cake stall at the Federal Election scheduled for Saturday 18 May 2019.

I would like to acknowledge the huge contribution the P&C make to our school community and ask all families - including students - to bake as many culinary treats as possible to ensure the success of our stall. Cake boxes are available from the canteen or student reception.

We are also in need of volunteers to man the BBQ and Cake stalls. Please register online for the BBQ at: https://volunteersignup.org/DHXQC and cakes at: https://www.volunteersignup.org/CXTWD so we can share the load and support this important fundraising initiative whilst feeding the many voters who will be gracing our grounds on the day.

Thank you to Mrs Tamara Filer, Ms Jenni Manning and Mr Greg Hammond for their coordination of this event. I look forward to seeing you on day - tongs in hand...

Staff Changes Term 2 has brought with it a number of staff changes.

Congratulations to Mrs Bernadette Jebbink who was successful at Merit Selection and has been appointed permanently to the role of Head Teacher Secondary Studies at Pennant Hills High School. Families will be aware of the dedication and commitment Mrs Jebbink has given to her students and our school over the years and we look forward to her expanding her influence in this role.

Congratulations to Ms Jessica Lam who was successful at Merit Selection and has been permanently appointed to our school. Ms Lam’s commitment to Mathematics, high standards and expectations for her students will be an asset to Penno.

We welcome back Mr Roger Niccol, Head Teacher HSIE from leave last term, Mr Jeff Minton, Head Teacher Special Education Unit after a period of secondment with the Department of Education (DoE) and Ms Alva Li, Teacher Languages from maternity leave.

We farewelled Mr Ikuto Choo, Teacher Languages who was successful at Merit Selection and been appointed substantively to Murray Farm Public School as part of their language immersion program. We also farewelled Dr Sara Kota, Teacher Mathematics who was transferred to Kuringai High School. We wish Mr Choo and Dr Kota all the very best in their new challenges and thank them for their contributions to Pennant Hills High School.

Upgrades to the Learning Environment at Pennant Hills High School During the holidays there were a number of significant upgrades commenced and in some cases completed at the school.

The combined project with our P&C of refurbishing the Library interior is well underway, with new seating and collaborative learning areas being installed. Our thanks to M&M Smart Systems who completed the works. Unfortunately, the Library

has been closed due to an upgrade of the decking at the entrance but we look forward to our students enjoying the new spaces shortly.

Significant work has been done to replace the eaves around the school, a number of classrooms were repainted and blinds installed with new carpet soon to arrive.

The learning environment for our students continues to be a priority and there will be further work in the coming months.

Tech Crew Induction Our Technical Crew undertook its annual induction program today. This wonderful group of students, ably coordinated by Ms Janelle Dennis, Head Teacher CAPA, are working tirelessly on the sound and lighting, and are an integral part of the successful implementation of every formal ceremony that takes place in the MPC. Thank you to the crew and Ms Dennis for the huge commitment and dedication given to our school.

NAPLAN NAPLAN tests are scheduled for Year 7 and 9 students next week. Tuesday 14 May – Language Conventions and Writing; Wednesday 15 May - Reading; and Thursday 16 May - Numeracy. Good luck to all students.

Winter Uniform Term 2 and 3 As the mercury falls and the new term commences, a reminder that winter uniform is to be worn for the next two terms. Junior boys are reminded that the school tie is compulsory attire every day. Winter jackets can be purchased through the Uniform Shop on Mondays and Fridays. The School Uniform Code specifies the types of acceptable jackets/jumpers for school wear, which does NOT include jackets or jumpers with hoods!

Student have been made aware that behaviour and deportment on the way to and from school in the public arena needs to remain exceptional. Wearing their uniform proudly is part of this expectation. Thank you to parents/caregivers for ensuring their student leaves for school in the correct attire every day.

Year 7 and 8 Parent Teacher Interviews Thank you to parents/caregivers who were able to attend the evening on Wednesday. Teachers value the opportunity to discuss the progress of their students with you and the feedback I received from families was that the meetings were highly valued and appreciated. Thank you to our staff for making themselves available for this important process.

Athletics Carnival Once again we were lucky with the weather and our Athletics Carnival was a great success. There was plenty of competitive spirit as well as fun had by both students and staff. I would like to thank the PDHPE staff for their fantastic organisation of the day: Mrs Kruger, Head Teacher PDHPE (Relieving), Mr Toohey, Mr Williams, Mrs Stewart, Mr Schmitt and Mr Stamatis for their dedication and coordination.

Uber Eats There have been a few incidents recently where Uber Eats have delivered to students at school. Uber Eats drivers are not permitted onto school grounds during school hours. Students have been reminded at assembly that this practice is not allowed. I would appreciate parental support in discussing the issue with their children and in particular the issues of safety and being off school grounds to collect from a delivery driver.

Sign in for Visitors Whilst on the topic of safety at school, a reminder that all visitors, including parents/caregivers who are attending appointments/interviews with teachers, MUST sign in at the Reception Desk located in Public Reception. This rule applies to visits during and out of school hours.

This is an important part of our Health and Safety procedures and more importantly, as we work to maintain the safety of all our students.

Adopt a Farmer Mufti Day Thank you to all students who supported the Adopt a Farmer DoE initiative, held Australia wide this week. We contributed $1,100.00 towards the Department’s goal of $800,000.00 a very pleasing effort. Funds will be sent to Rural Aid who will distribute to the farming communities including the struggling towns in which they live.

A MEDICAL REMINDER

We welcome information from parents and carers about your student’s health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. We ask for medical information when you enrol your student. It is also important that you let us know if health care needs change or new health conditions develop.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes, and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the Principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning support for your student’s health and wellbeing.

It is also important to remember to notify staff in the office of any changes to contact details, including emergency contacts.

We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your student’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR APRIL: HOW STUDENTS GET THEMSELVES MOTIVATED TO DO ACADEMIC WORK

The following is extracted from ‘Regulation of Motivation: Evaluating an Underemphasized Aspect of Self-Regulated Learning” by C. Wolters. (Educational Psychologist, 2003, 38(4), pp.189-205).

1. REWARDS: Many students set rewards for themselves “I’ll read this section then I can eat this

sandwich”. Some students use the opposite, punishments; they create consequences for themselves where

they will deprive themselves if they do not do the work.

2. SELF-PRAISE: Some students find that recognising their progress to themselves and praising

themselves for their efforts creates a more positive mental environment and encourages them to keep going.

Comments such as “Well done, you’ve solved yet another problem” can help create mental stamina.

3. GOAL-ORIENTED SELF-TALK: Students who think about why they are studying or what possible future

outcomes could be from putting in effort can also strengthen the effect of these thoughts by making sub-

vocal statements while they are engaged in an academic activity. When faced with an urge to stop working

they may focus on the thought of getting better marks, or getting into a particular course at uni or even the

satisfaction of learning a new skill or developing self-discipline.

4. INTEREST ENHANCEMENT: This involves looking for ways to make the task to be completed more

interesting or enjoyable. Even making slight modifications to make something less boring or repetitive. One

student found that by writing notes in a different style it made the activity more inspiring.

5. ENVIRONMENTAL STRUCTURING: This is also referred to as resource management and is all about

removing temptations and creating an environment that is more conducive to studying. It may even mean

studying in a different location such as a local or school library in order to stay focused on the tasks to be

completed.

6. PROXIMAL GOAL-SETTING: Breaking larger tasks into smaller more manageable chunks will help

students to feel more motivated about what needs to be done. Setting specific and achievable short-term

goals with an allocated time-frame can help increase students’ sense of efficacy.

7. DEFENSIVE PESSIMISM: “I think about how unprepared I am in order to get myself to work harder”.

There is mixed research about this approach and the negativity involved. However every student is different

and for some students making themselves a bit anxious about what they haven’t done may be necessary to

get them to start doing their work.

8. EMOTIONAL CONTROL: Thoughts produce feelings, feelings lead to actions. If we can make our

thoughts and feelings more positive, this can lead to more positive actions. When students are feeling

unmotivated, strategies such as taking a short amount of time to close their eyes and engage in deep slow

breathing, or counting slowly backwards from 10 while thinking positive reassuring thoughts about their

abilities to do what has to be done has been found to be beneficial.

STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR MAY: BARRIERS TO DEVELOPING A GOOD MEMORY

Many students say ‘I don’t have a good memory’ but there are many barriers to developing a good memory that are able to be overcome. Here are the top 3:

1. NEGATIVE MINDSET / ATTITUDE Henry Ford once famously said, “whether you believe you can, or you can't, you are right”. This refers to your mindset or mental attitude, and the concept that your mind is powerful enough to enable your thoughts to create your reality. If you have a negative attitude to your memory, it will likely reduce your chance of developing and maintaining a good memory. There are some simple steps you can take to start making changes to negative thoughts. Be aware that negative thoughts are just a habit, and habits can be changed with a little effort. Awareness is the key to changing a habit, as you need to consciously be aware of the current habit before you can change it – so start catching yourself in the act of making negative statements. Affirm your intention to improve the way you think. Then correct the negative statement you just made, and make it into a more positive one.

2. ABSENTMINDEDNESS / NOT PAYING ATTENTION The first stage of the memory process is encoding the information that is to be remembered – thus the brain uses the senses and emotions to process the information and form a memory. Here are some ways in which you can be less absentminded: - Setting an intention to become more attentive. - Sitting up front where there are less things to distract you, especially if you have difficulty paying attention in class. -Taking notes in class to ensure you listen.

3. STRESS / ANXIETY Stress will increase the likelihood of being distracted, resulting in low concentration meaning that information may not be encoded accurately – and thus cannot be later retrieved. Stress may also result in mental blanks. For example, if you’re stressed before an exam, you may not be able to think clearly and access and retrieve the information you need. The best thing to do is to take ten deep breaths and calm down to allow your mind to focus.

CARING FOR OUR STUDENTS

From time to time it will be necessary for students to leave school during the school day. Whilst these instances should be kept to an absolute minimum, we understand that sometimes it will be unavoidable.

If you know in advance that your student will need to leave school early, please send a signed note which they should present to Student Reception at the start of the school day, so a Leave Pass can be prepared. Students holding a Leave Pass are free to leave the school grounds at the designated time.

If a student needs to leave unexpectedly during the day, to ensure their safety and security, our staff are obliged to ask for ID from the person coming to collect them. Parents should ensure that they (or their approved representative) bring some form of photo ID if they are collecting their student without prior written advice to the school.

NSW PARLIAMENT HOUSE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Our Vice Captains Rebecca, Matt and I had the honour and pleasure of being invited to a Leadership Program at the NSW Parliament House in the city on Wednesday.

We made our way early morning to the city. The day started off with School Captains from 60 different schools from all over Sydney, heading into a Q & A session with Local Members of Parliament. The session was filled with inspirational stories, advice and plenty of humour. The large group was then taken to the Legislative Assembly, where we watched politicians bicker, argue and then be ‘told off’ for being a bad example in front of the School Leaders.

The group then split. We had lunch with Mr Matt Kean, Minister for Energy and Environment, Member for Hornsby and 8 other School Captains. We spoke about his story, mental health and environmental issues among other subjects.

Mr Kean mentioned that he thoroughly enjoys seeing the regular content on the Penno SLC Instagram account, and that he would love to be featured on it. He later filmed a video with me talking about the Blanket and Beanie Appeal. The video will be coming out later next week. We also had a visit and spoke to Ms Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of NSW.

After photos were taken, the now smaller group walked down to Government House. We were given a tour and then regrouped with the other schools for a talk and a Q & A session from Margaret Beazley, the newly appointed Governor of NSW. The afternoon was finished with more photos, food and lots of talking.

Friendships were built, connections were made, inspiration was at an all time high and a great day was had by all.

David, School Captain

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY

Unexplained Late Arrivals The new Sentral system will issue a second slip to all late arrivals who do not have a note to justify why they have not arrived at school on time. The slip will have the student’s name, class, date and time of arrival together with provision for an explanation and signature from their parent or carer. All late slips must be signed and returned to Student Reception. Slips can be placed in the Absence Notes box located on the front counter.

Unexplained absences will be recorded as Unjustified unless a note or slip is sent to the school and will appear on the students’ School Report under attendance. Amendments to students’ attendance cannot be made later than two weeks of the original absence.

Absences All student absences from school must be explained in writing by a parent or carer. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone the office as soon as possible to let us know and, most importantly, follow up with a note on your student’s first day back at school.

The Department Of Education requires that an explanation for absence MUST be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence.

Holidays and travel outside of school holiday periods need approval from the school if the time away from class exceeds four school days. A form can be obtained from Student Reception for all extended leave. This must be completed and returned with a copy of travel documents ie. tickets or itinery for each student applying for leave.

Please contact Student Reception on 9473 5000 if you have any questions.

SLC BEANIE AND BLANKET APPEAL

Throughout the month of May, there are people all over Sydney experiencing winter outside in the freezing cold, with minimal shelter and insufficient clothing.

In 2016, current Year 12 student and School Captain David started the Blanket and Beanie Appeal at Pennant Hills High School which had huge success. The following year the appeal was run at two schools.

This year, the Blanket and Beanie Appeal is being run at six different high schools, with the same aim. To help the homeless. Pennant Hills High School, Cherrybrook Technology High School, Muirfield High School, Castle Hill High School, Rouse Hill Anglican College and Oakhill College are all uniting for this worthy cause!

Starting this week and ending Week 5, the Student Leadership Council (SLC) are collecting blankets, beanies and scarves that will be distributed to the homeless across Sydney and Parramatta. We will be collecting new, quality or used blankets, beanies and scarves. Items can be dropped in the box located at Student Reception.

The majority of the donations will go to the homeless in Paramatta who are sleeping on the streets. As the weather begins to get cool, you can only imagine how much these donations will mean to the recipients.

Look out for the FANTASTIC posters around school. For more information, search PennoSLC Instagram or Blanket and Beanie Appeal on Instagram or Facebook.

Lets show those other schools how its done! For any further questions, please see Year 10 student Deanna or Year 12 student David.

CAPA NEWS

Our Creative and Performing Arts Faculty (CAPA) students have been very busy over the past term.

The Photography Club is working on their first assignment. Our Music and Visual Arts Higher School Certificate (HSC) students are diligently developing their HSC performances and body of works, and our junior students are engaged within the classroom. Of note, our Year 7 and Stage 5 Music students participated in the Bangourake Drumming Incursion last month.

We have a few upcoming events: Concert Band 2, the String Ensemble and the Choir will perform at the Pennant Hills Public School Fete on Sunday 26 May; The String Ensemble will perform at the Socially Strings evening at our school on the evening of Friday 7 June; The Music Festival is scheduled for Wednesday 19 June in the MPC; and Concert Band 1 will perform at the Sydney Eisteddfod at Chatswood on Wednesday 22 June.

Year 11 Visual Arts Year 11 Visual Arts students have been working very industriously on their Term 1 drawings titled Railways, Motorways and Roadways as they investigated the notion of ‘making the ordinary extraordinary’.

They initially went out into the local area to take their photographs, then they decided on a suitable composition for their artwork. They used a variety of wet and dry media to complete their large black and white drawings, emphasising a single focal point, aspects of perspective and fine detail in their compositions.

Year 7 Visual Arts

All of the Year 7 Visual Arts classes have now completed their Name Design unit for the front cover of their process diary.

Students were careful in their design composition and then applied a complimentary colour scheme to their paintings based on their investigations of colour wheel theory.

Year 7 have also recently completed their pinch pot ceramic form to make engaging ceramic sculptures such as pigs and tortoises, as well as cupcake pots with a lid. They were very enthusiastic with their clay work and learned new technical skills along the way.

Janelle Dennis, Head Teacher CAPA

AFRICAN BEAT INCURSION!

Last term Year 7 students took part in a special African Beat performance. The performers, a master drummer and a dancer were from Ghana, West Africa and introduced our students to the collaborative community way of music making in their country.

Each student had the opportunity to learn a song in the Ga language of Ghana and perform this with the backing of drums and percussion provided by our visitors. Students then joined a large group to play the Djembe, a goblet-shaped drum. This enthusiastic and loud activity was typical of African community music making.

Students enjoyed themselves and at the conclusion of the concert quite a few wanted to take some selfies with the performers as a memento of an enjoyable time!

KOALA PARK An Important Message for

Recent Enrolments

From time to time, students will be asked to meet in

Koala Park before proceeding to an activity.

Within the Pennant Hills High School context, Koala Park refers to the stand of eucalyptus

trees located within the school grounds, behind the goal posts of the main oval,

just opposite the rear of the MPC.

(It should not be confused with the commercial operation of the same name, located on Castle Hill Road, West Pennant Hills.)

VISUAL ARTS AND PHOTOGRAPHY & DIGITAL MEDIA EXCURSION

Last term, the Visual Arts faculty ran an excursion for Stage 5 Visual Arts and Photography & Digital Media students to go to Cockatoo Island. We travelled by train and ferry, taking in all the impressive scenery that Sydney Harbour has to offer.

Students took many photographs and spent time drawing the structures on the island. Year 9 Visual Arts students were able to produce detailed drawings from their surroundings which will be a focus for their Term 3 unit of work. Year 9 Photography and Digital Media students concentrated on elements of design and fundamentals in photography including the rule of thirds, negative and positive space and leading lines. Year 10 Photography and Digital Media students were looking at how shutter speed affects exposure and conducted experiments in the tunnels and warehouse with low light.

Some comments from our students included:

“The excursion was very fun and we learnt a lot about exposure and how to do it and how it works. Cockatoo Island was a really nice location for taking photos.”

“The excursion was a great opportunity to learn about different and new camera techniques that we haven’t tried before.”

“The excursion was good experience of how to work with a camera in the real world and outside the classroom”

“The scenery made for a memorable trip with stunning photos”
