A MEDICAL REMINDER

We welcome information from parents and carers about your student’s health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. We ask for medical information when you enrol your student. It is also important that you let us know if health care needs change or new health conditions develop.

Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes, and other health care related issues (including prior conditions such as medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the Principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning support for your student’s health and wellbeing.

It is also important to remember to notify staff in the office of any changes to contact details, including emergency contacts and information regarding medical practitioners.

We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your student’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

2. Sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, dispose of the tissue straight away and then wash your hands. Try to avoid touching your face.

3. Stay home if you are unwell. Staff or students who show signs of being unwell throughout the day will be sent home immediately.

We would appreciate all families reinforcing this message at home.

As part of the ongoing management and containment of the COVID-19 virus, we have received advice from the DoE that recommends against having external visitors at school, wherever possible. This has resulted in the postponement of several planned events, including all incursions and any excursions outside the local area. We are hopeful that some of these events can be rescheduled later in the year.

Grade Sport Whilst a decision in response to COVID-19 was taken by Ku-ring-gai Zone to postpone Grade Sport until further notice, sport remains an important activity at Pennant Hills High School. For the remainder of this term, current grade teams will participate in either internally arranged competitions or sport specific training sessions. As advised, outside learning when possible, is an excellent way to assist in the implementation of the social distancing policy.

COVID-19 Website Update As things are developing quickly in this space, it is important to ensure consistent and timely messaging to parents and caregivers. To assist with communication, a yellow banner has been placed on the DoE’s website, which links to the most up-to-date information available. The same link can also be accessed through our school website in a News Bulletin dated 15 March 2020 named Schools to implement distancing measures or by clicking here: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/school-safety/novel-coronavirus

Please familiarise yourself with the location of this banner/link as many of the answers to questions frequently being asked, are readily available.

Once again, I thank our school community for their understanding and commitment in assisting with the management and containment of the COVID-19 virus.

Contacting Teachers and Making Appointments It is also timely to remind all parents and caregivers that the correct protocol for contacting teachers or Executive staff is as follows:

telephone or email the school with your query and/or to request a meeting. Please include a brief description of the reason for the meet;

make an appointment for a meeting at a mutually convenient time.

Please note, all visitors must sign in at Public Reception immediately upon entering school grounds.

This is a Health and Safety directive and assists us with monitoring the whereabouts of our guests should an emergency arise.

Teachers will be contacted by our Administrative Staff once visitors are signed in.

Thank you for adhering to this policy.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Matilda - The Musical Congratulations to the cast and crew of Matilda - The Musical on their spectacular and very professional performances.

Every aspect of the show was mesmerizing: from the staging and lighting, to the choreography and special theatrical moments, and of course the acting, dancing and fabulous singing. It was all sensational!

Thank you to Mr Courtney Cassar and Ms Laura Sheldon who worked tirelessly producing, directing and coordinating the enormous team comprising of students, staff, parents and caregivers of both Pennant Hills High School and several of our partner Primary Schools.

Thank you to the following staff for their valuable contributions: Teachers: Mrs Austin, Mrs Coomber, Mrs Erickson, Ms Feilen, Miss Morton and Mr Schmitt; Administrative: Mrs Louis, Mrs Finch and Mrs Shaw; and Music Conductors: Mr Buckley and Ms Kelly.

Every member of the group ensured that our production was of an extremely high standard.

On Saturday night I welcomed a number of VIP’s, including Mr Julian Leeser MP, Federal Member for Berowra. As expected, they were thoroughly awe struck by the quality and grandeur of the show.

I am a very proud Principal and grateful for both the amazing learning opportunity Matilda provided for our students, as well as the outstanding impression of Penno Matilda has made in our local community.

Congratulations one and all.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards Congratulations to Year 12 2019 students: Chloe, Benjamin and Toby, on receiving the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award earlier this month. In the pursuit of this coveted and prestigious prize, all three students were committed to the challenge, rising above their comfort zones to ensure that no obstacle put before them was too great. A well deserved and fantastic achievement.

Year 11 and 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews The afternoon was well attended by staff, students, parents and caregivers. There was a busy but well organised vibe and the feedback from families was very positive, especially about how well our teachers know their students.

Thank you to Mrs Payne, Deputy Principal and her team for their expert coordination of the event. Thank you to our teachers who were on hand to provide support and encouragement. The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is a journey we embark on together with our senior students. The interviews were a very important part of the process, reassuring families of our commitment to the end game.

COVID-19 The Department of Education (DoE) has been working closely with the NSW Department of Health to plan and operate in accordance with its pandemic plan, to ensure the support, safety and wellbeing of staff and students.

We continue to work cooperatively to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Three things we all need to do:

1. Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly.

STUDY SKILLS TIP: TOP TIPS FOR MEMORISING NOTES

Many students find it really difficult to cope with the memorisation that can be needed for tests and exams. Of course you can’t just rote learn and regurgitate, you need to be able to apply the skills of what you have learnt. However there is also a certain amount of memorisation of content, formulas and definitions for example that will be necessary. So how can students make this process easier?

1. Make your notes as brain-friendly as possible, point form, tables, diagrams and no big long sentences or paragraphs.

2. Start the memorisation process of your notes early, don’t wait until just before the test or examination. 3. Memorisation involves testing yourself over and over and over and over. So read a section, then see what you

can say or write down without looking. Then go back and see what you got wrong or didn’t know. Put a pencil mark next to these bits.

4. Now focus on the bits you didn’t know. Say them out loud, repeat them to yourself, write them down a few times. 5. Then test yourself on those bits again and see if you remembered more this time. 6. Do this over and over and over again. Then do it one more time again. 7. Make flashcards or use a flashcard App on your phone to create flashcards on the parts you find hard to

remember. Review these every day before the test. 8. Make a list of the key concepts you find hard to learn and each night read through them just before you go to

sleep and first thing when you wake up as these are powerful memory times. 9. Do lots of practise questions without looking at your notes or the answers to see if you can a) remember and b)

apply the information. Review the things you did not remember again. 10. Your job is to keep testing yourself in order to find out which bits have not stuck in your memory yet so you can

review these until they do.

$30,000 worth of equipment. Year 12 were very fortunate to have had this opportunity.

Stage 6 Agriculture – Tocal College Visit Our Agriculture classes joined Galston High School (GHS) Agriculture students on an important visit to Tocal College. During their visit, students spoke to the dairy manager who discussed all aspects of a dairy enterprise: breeding, feeding, production and marketing of dairy products.

Students observed 2-day-old calves, milking operations and pasture rotations. They participated in discussions on the increasing need of artificial insemination using genetic material from across the globe to compensate for the gap in the bull quality available.

Innovative agricultural technologies were on display for students to witness the application and impact that technology has on our dairy industry. One particularly interesting application was the use of collars on cows to indicate optimal timing for insemination – who knew!? This technology has increased successful conception and decreased the amount of human labour required to successfully breed cattle.

The excursion was a great way to support the Stage 6 Farm Product Study and a fantastic initiative between our own Agriculture teacher Mrs Newton and Ms Bunn, Teacher GHS.

High Achieving Students Our amazing school captains, Emily and James, spent 12 days over the summer holidays attending the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Brisbane. Both students came back with many fabulous tales about trips to leading industrial companies, scientific lab visits and a formal parliamentary dinner.

Even more exciting, is the fact that any Science student who is currently in Year 11 has the opportunity to have their own NYSF adventure next January.

TERM 1 IN SCIENCE

Year 7 Science This term, we welcomed our Year 7 students and introduced them to the exciting world of Science.

Many of them have been busy in the laboratory, learning to use apparatus and safe work practices.

A word from 7Science A: “the first thing we have learnt was how to be safe in the classroom and when using equipment. We have learnt how to safely light and use a Bunsen burner. We ran some investigations that involved measuring

time, temperature and mass. Recently we have been looking at the difference between observations and inferences in investigations, and drawing and reading graphs. We are enjoying working in Science so far.” – Aimee, Brigette and Sophia.

Keep up the curiosity Year 7.

Year 12 Biology Students have once again been treated to some sophisticated experiences in the Biology lab. Thanks to a two-week loan of equipment from Sydney University, students have been able to genetically engineer bacteria to make it glow a beautiful fluorescent red. It is a privilege to be able to access such highly specialised equipment to conduct first-hand investigations in our own school.

These practical experiences allow students to participate in bringing the concepts presented in the syllabus to life.

Thank you to Mrs Heywood and Mr Rump, Science Teachers and Mrs Kleinman, Science Assistant for the enormous task of collecting, preparing and returning the

STUDENT ABSENCES

There are many sound reasons, including illness and family emergencies, why students may not be able to attend school on occasions.

The Department of Education (DoE) requires that all valid absences be supported by written advice from a parent/caregiver within seven days of the student’s return to school. We are required to record as unjustified any absence not supported by a note from a parent/caregiver.

If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone the office as soon as possible to let us know and, most importantly, follow up with a note on your student’s first day back at school. Your cooperation will assist us in encouraging appropriate patterns of student attendance.

MEDICAL ALERT

Students who have been identified by their parent/caregiver as asthmatic must carry their own reliever puffer (e.g. Ventolin) at all times.

It is the parent/caregiver’s duty of care to ensure their child carries their

TERM 1 IN SCIENCE continued

Both Emily and James strongly encourage all students to apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Applications for the 2021 program opened this month. Please see your Science teacher or the NYSF website for more information.

Lizard Island The Science faculty are very excited for Year 11 student Ellesha, who was selected from a strong field of applicants to attend the 2020 Lizard Island Coral Reef Study Tour. The study tour is scheduled for April and we look forward to hearing all about her adventures

when she returns.

SPORTS SHORTS…

Girl Opens Football Last week, our team played their first round game against Ku-ring-gai High School. uring the first 20 minutes, the game was tight but as it progressed, the Penno spirit shone through and we dominated.

Yashmin scored the first goal after Anna made a beautiful run down the line and crossed it in for Yashmin to tap it in. The second goal was scored by Dayna after an opposition player handled the ball outside the box. Dayna stepped up to take the free kick, and curled the ball into the top corner. The third goal was scored by Taejah after she dribbled past two defenders and slotted the ball past the keeper. The fourth goal was scored by last years top scorer Yvonne who tapped the ball into the back of the net after a stunning cross by Sophia Mattson.

Congratulations to the team on an outstanding performance. A big thank you to all parents who continue to support the team.

Damien Schmitt Sport Coordinator (Relieving) Year 10 Physical Activity & Sports Studies (PASS) Excursion

Students visited Thornleigh Golf Centre where they had the opportunity to look at the technology involved within the game of golf as well as have a round on mini-golf. During this term students are studying a ‘Technology in Sport’ unit and as part of their assessment task are asked to look at video and technique analysis of a golf swing.

Students were given the opportunity to see technology advancements first hand when coaches demonstrated the use of ‘Trackman,’ the number one swing path and ball flight monitoring device in the world, showing the athlete accurate data about their swing and ways to better improve their swing.

Students were professionally coached by a staff member at the venue during 3 phases of their swing, aiming to improve their technique and

ultimately improve their performance. It was amazing to see the improvement of their swing over such a short time. A fun and educational day had by all.

Alyce Smith and Nick Stamatis PASS Teachers Year 11 CAFS Excursion Students from our Community and Family Studies (CAFS) class visited Parramatta Mission and the Uniting Church to gain a deeper understanding of support services and what they do within our communities.

Parramatta mission works alongside the Uniting Church to provide meals, accommodation and mental health services across Greater Western Sydney, providing assistance to the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our communities in an aim to help assist them in transforming their lives.

Parramatta Mission welcomed our students, allowing them to be involved in one of their support service programs – Meals Plus. They were able to listen and engage in the wonderful work that Parramatta Mission supplies for their local community but also allowed them to volunteer with the preparation of meals.

Visiting Parramatta Mission was an enriching life experience for our Year 11 CAFS students where they were able to experience support services first hand and given the opportunity to volunteer their time and services to help others in need.
