1. Sign up for the Experiential Learning Co-op Program

• Get the opportunity to complete your co-op in the Early Childhood Education Sector.

• This is an excellent opportunity to ‘test’ out a trade to see if it’s right for you!

• Earn a wage while you learn.

2. Registered OYAP/Co-op

• Continue your co-op placement in a daycare or nursery school AND get registered as an apprentice with the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (Apprenticeship Branch).

• The hours completed at co-op will count towards the completion of your apprenticeship program.

• Students must achieve trade specific skill levels.

3. Specialized Level 1 OYAP/Co-op

• Registered apprentices have the opportunity to complete the 1st level of the ‘in-school’ portion of your apprenticeship training.

• Receive secondary school credits for the time spent in the cooperative education placement.

• Receive secondary school credits and college credits for the in-school time at college as well.

• Academic requirement for an apprenticeship is Grade 12.

• Length of apprenticeship is 5280 hours – 3 to 4 years (including two 360 hour in school components).

Your future as an Early Childhood Educator!Early Childhood Educators are employed primarily in a nursery school or day care setting. They organize and plan activities to help children grow both intellectually, emotionally and physically.

Here are some of the duties performed by Early Childhood Educators:

• Develop and implement daily activities for children.

• Guide and assist children in the development of proper personal care habits.

• Assist children experiencing learning exceptionalities.

• Lead children in activities such as telling and reading stories, teaching songs, introduction to musical instruments, preparing crafts and taking children on local field trips.

• Plan programs with parents and other staff members.

• Perform job duties with care and creativity.

Grade 9: English, Mathematics, Science Recommended: Integrated Technologies

Grade 10: English, Mathematics, Science Recommended: Health and Personal Services Technology

Grade 11: English, Mathematics Recommended: Social Science and Humanities Cooperative Education (OYAP - ECE Placement)

Grade 12: English, MathematicsRecommended: Child Development and Gerontology

Cooperative Education (OYAP - ECE Placement)

Note: Suggested but not mandatory, secondary courses that would be beneficial for students contemplating a career path as an Early Childhood Educator would include:• Physical Education • Visual Arts • Food & Nutrition • Drama

Post-secondary destinationOption #1 - Early Childhood Education ApprenticeAcademic requirement for an apprenticeship is Grade 12. Length of apprenticeship is 5280 hours – 3 to 4 years (including two 360 hour in school components).

Option #2 - College ProgramAdmission requirements for a college program in ECE are English, Mathematics and Science at the college level.

Level 1 College (theory) programs require students to be registered as apprentices.
