Starting Year 7

The beginning of secondary school is a critical time for students. Warren Central School’s transition

program enables students to maintain the strong sense of belonging that they felt in primary school.

Your child is invited to join our Year 6-7 transition program for Year 7 2019. This will occur on the

following dates:

Day 1: Wednesday 21 November 2018 (recess needed)

Day 2: Wednesday 5 December 2018 (recess, lunch OR lunch money needed)

Students are to arrive at Warren Central School by 8.35am and assemble in the Secondary

Quadrangle in front of the hall. They will be dismissed at 2.50pm.

Parents, caregivers and students are invited to join the secondary teachers for a BBQ lunch

Wednesday 21st November at 1.20pm. Afterwards there will be an information session held in the

Hospitality Room Bistro.

Future Skills, Student Leadership

As part of our school moving forward into the next two years, our school is placing a heavy emphasis on student

leadership as well as opportunities for students to develop their leadership potential. There is a lot of research around

that suggests that employers are going to require different skill paths in the future. Whilst highly technical skills will

always be in demand, employers are going to want prospective employees who possess highly developed connection,

collaboration, creative and leadership skills. This will also involve students with skills that display a high AQ. What is

AQ? AQ is a person’s Adaptability Quotient. This is where employees are able to easily adapt and thrive in new

surroundings or demands or an ever changing environment. As part of this focus, you will see inside this week ’s

Jumbunna details around the highly successful GRIP leadership conference that occurred last week in Dubbo.

Swimming Scheme

I cannot stress enough how important it is that your child is able to swim and be a strong swimmer. Every year,

hundreds of children drown and many due to the fact that they are unable to swim. It is a fact that the one

state – Queensland and the one Territory – Northern Territory who do not have mandatory swim scheme also account

for the highest number of fatalities per capita as a result. This program will be running between the 19th and 30

November for students in years 2-4.

One Song/Macquarie Conservatorium

Last week at assembly, students participated with over 3000 schools singing ‘One Song’. Ably led by Mrs Evans, the

students along with other schools celebrated connecting with one voice, music education in our school. I would like to

thank Mrs Evans for organising this event. On another note, (pardon the pun) primary students were able to ‘test drive’

the flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, baritone and trombone to see whether they would like to pursue learning an

instrument. The benefits of learning an instrument are profound and widespread such as improved memory and

coordination as well as greater language and comprehension development.

Did you know? Good news stories from around the world.

The World’s First Ocean Cleanup System

This was launched on 8th September 2018 from San Francisco to clean up the Great Pacific garbage patch where

technology has been deployed to use ocean forces that will remove the world’s largest accumulation of ocean plastics.

You can follow this here – Http://theoceancleanup.com

The latest XPrize was awarded for new technology that accumulates water by pulling it from the air. This involves a

device that sits within a shipping container to almost instantly bring clean drinking water anywhere and which could

extract at least 2,000 litres of water a day which would meet the daily needs of 100 people. An added bonus is that it

only requires clean energy to operate.

School hats There are a number of students that are not wearing school bucket hats for break times. Hats are available from the front office or the clothing shop for $15. Students must wear a hat at all times when out in the playground. The ‘no hat, no play’ policy will be strongly enforced this term. Students without a school bucket hat will sit under the sheltered area of the playground or involve themselves in quiet activities in the library at lunch. This term we are trialling a movie at lunchtime to further accommodate students without hats.

Tennis Last Friday 8 students competed in the NARRAF/Gobondary Tennis Gala day at Tottenham. The weather was not so kind and blew all day making some aspects of tennis quite tricky. However, they had a great day of tennis finishing the day in third position. Lilly Higgins was awarded Best & Fairest for the day. Congratulations to Lilly Higgins, Coby Hall, Ryan Stanley, Jack Reid, Harrison Leach, Lily Stacey, Bella Gough and Matilda Hansen on their dedication and great sportsmanship. A big thank you to Mrs Higgins for assisting these children to build their skills prior to the gala day by training them each lunchtime in the lead up to the day.

School Swimming Scheme Permission notes and money are due for Intensive Swimming Scheme. Money is due this Friday 9 November in full. Please ensure you get notes and money in as soon as possible to guarantee your child’s place in the scheme.

Spelling Bee Congratulations to the Spelling Bee contestants, Lilly Higgins, Paddy Barnett and Lily Stacey, who received their awards at assembly last week.

Prefect Nominees Don’t forget our Prefect nominees will be presenting their speeches at next week’s K-6 assembly. Please encourage your child to practise their speech at home if they are a nominee. We have had a couple of students present free topic speeches at our Friday afternoon assembly and they have been very impressive so far. We look forward to hearing more this Friday.

Kinder Transition Preschool students who have enrolled in Warren Central School to begin in 2019 have had their second half day transition this week. Mrs Mulvaney has been very busy organising wonderful activities for the children and we have had some enthusiastic feedback about starting school from the children. Next Tuesday, the transition children will be staying for a full day. The Preschool will not be walking children up to the school, so please drop your child off at 9:00am to Warren Central School and pickup at 2:50pm. If you have any enquiries or concerns about this transition day, please phone the office for information.

Kinder Orientation on Tuesday 6 November, taking a tour of Warren Central School with Mrs Mulvaney.

Stage 3 Excursion Thankyou to all parents of Stage 3 students for paying the excursion fee in full by the due date. There are still some outstanding medical consent forms to be filled out online. Please complete these as soon as possible as NSW Sport and Recreation need this information to assist them in ensuring they have met the needs of all students. If you need any assistance with this, please see Mrs McCormack or Ms Oates.

One Song

‘Count Us In’ is a program which exists to advocate for and celebrate music in

Australian schools. At the Primary School Assembly on 1 November all students

sang 'One Song' in unison. Students lifted their voices loud and proud following

rehearsals in class with music teacher Mrs Evans. A number of the students also

studied and performed the Auslan sign language actions. Over 3000 schools across

Australia participated in the national sing along.

Macquarie Conservatorium comes to Warren Central School Nick Evans and Neill Ryan, two very talented music teachers visited Warren Central School on Tuesday 23rd October

to perform, demonstrate and test those students who want to begin music instrumental lessons in 2019 through the

Macquarie Conservatorium. Both teachers reported that there were many capable students who were able to make a

sound on the flute, clarinet, saxophone, baritone, trumpet and trombone. Mr Nick Evans who now lives in Warren Shire

will be commencing teaching in Term 1 2019.

This is a reminder to those students who completed the testing to get your forms completed and posted back to the

Macquarie Conservatorium.

For further inquiries about music tuition opportunities please contact Mrs Frances Evans at the school.

Shearing at School

K/1 Banksia and secondary students at WCS were

treated to a lesson in life on the land on Monday 29

October, witnessing first-hand sheep shearing at the

school.

Shearer Tyrone Thompson brought his own shearing

equipment to shear the sheep. Students had the

chance to feel and smell the wool.

Thank you to Tyrone for giving up his time to shear

the sheep.

Polished Man Campaign

On the 31 of October, SRC members painted one fingernail to raise awareness for violence against children. Both

Primary and Secondary students participated in the day and it was great to see such support for the cause. Students

watched a short clip during rollcall, showing the impact of child violence. On average, 1 child will die every five minutes

resulting from child violence.
