Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of the world, you have shouldered the burden of our weakness and borne our sufferings in your own passion and death. Hear this pray-er for our sick brothers and sister whom you have re-deemed. Strengthen their hope of salvation and sustain them in body and soul, for you live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.

FATHER ANTHONY’S FAITH FORMATION CORNER
Mark 3:29: “Whoever Blasphemes Against the Holy Spirit…”
We are now back to the Sundays of Ordinary Time. Our Gospel reading for this Sunday (Mark 3) has to do with the charges accused against Jesus by the religious leaders: namely that “he drives out demons by the prince of demons.” Then Jesus utters a statement that eventually would have important theological implications for future gen-erations: “All sins and blasphemies shall be forgiven… but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” So what is this sin against the Holy Spirit? Throughout the history of our Christian traditions—namely, what we learned in catechism, or in faith formation—this “sin” is quite severe. Beginning with St. Augustine in the early Church, this unforgivable sin had to do with one’s final impenitence and resistance to God’s grace. Medieval theology describes it as a genus with six species of sin: despair, presumption, impenitence, obstinacy or hardness of heart, re-sistance to known divine truth, and envy of another’s spiritual well-being. Medieval people were obsessed with the number seven: I do not know why they came with only six! In the traditional Calvinist (Protestant) view, very much in line with Augustine, it consisted in deliberately resisting divine truth and was a sign of final reprobation, taking into account the Calvinist concept of predestination. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the for-giveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss,” (#1864). I believe that as Catholics, we all learned these things or similar ones about the sin against the Holy Spirit. However, these views represent later developments beyond the New Testament text and must be tested against the sense intended by the biblical text/author. What I mean to say is that if we just take these views (for example, the six sins in medieval theology) and accept them as final and definitive, we are reading into the biblical text, as opposed to doing justice to the biblical text by interpreting it in its proper context. “Reading into the text” means that we already have certain preconceptions about something, and we just look for some biblical text to support those preconceived notions. Obviously “reading into the text” does not do justice to the meaning of the biblical text. Anyway, in the context of the Gospel of Mark (ch. 3), this sin is not final impenitence or refusal to accept God’s grace, but the deliberate attempt on the part of the scribes to attribute the divine action (Jesus’ healing and exor-cism) to the demonic… In the end, in the overall context of Jesus’ preaching about the Kingdom of God, no sin is so great that it cannot be forgiven, as long as one opens his/her heart to receive God’s mercy.
