Hello everybody,
Today we celebrate one of the great solemnities of the Church, Corpus Christi. This special day, two weeks after Easter concludes, reminds us of the gift that we receive every time we approach the altar of the Lord. To think that God in his love for us would embrace the cross, die, and give himself to us in the Most Blessed Sacrament! What a wonderous and loving God have we! Each time we receive Jesus, encounter Him waiting for us in prayer before the tabernacle, or kneel before Him in exposition, it is Christ inviting us to grow in deeper union.
Over this time of social distancing, we have been challenged to be distant from the Sacrament. Though the miracle of modern technology has made virtual presence easier and more accessible than ever before, it is not the same as the Real Presence. Though it may be trite to say, it does not diminish the reality of the old expression that “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Though we never want to be deprived from the Holy Sacrament, may we be mindful that God in his love will never limit himself in reaching out to us. The beauty of the spiritual communion prayer is one that unites us to Jesus and one another as we gather, in person or virtually.
Corpus Christi invites us to think of our relationship with Christ and how it is the source and summit of our faith. To receive the Eucharist is to welcome the gift of God’s union deep within our hearts. That is why it is so important for us to be in a state of grace each time we present ourselves in the Communion line. The host is not a symbol of Christ’s love, but the very presence of God. To say amen and to welcome that bit of the Lord is something that should change our hearts. To go to Mass on Sunday should have a profound impact in how we treat each other Monday. May everyday be one that draws us closer to God.
May God bless you always, Fr. Hennes

Weekly Reflection—Corpus Christi. How important is the Eucharist to you? Do you take advantage of every opportunity to receive it? Consider what Jesus told the disciples: “If you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” We have heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” If you would become more Christ-life, then the Eucharist should be an important part of your life. No, it will not transform you and make you perfect over night. It will provide you with the grace you need to move closer to that goal and it will remind you of this most important goal. Make it a priority to receive the Eucharist every time you attend Mass and after receiving Communion, take a few moments to thank God for this gift and to renew your commitment to become more like Christ. Please keep in your prayers the health and healing of Steve Brazzale.

Above the side pews at St. Joseph, there is a large statue of a 13th century Franciscan holding a book and baby Jesus. This
Is Anthony of Padua, the “Hammer of Heretics,” known for his excellent preaching and bringing Christ out of the scriptures (hence the baby Jesus standing on the book). Besides his preaching, Anthony is most known for winning a challenge to prove Christ in the Eucharist. Famously, Anthony placed a starved mule between fresh feed and the Eucharist. The mule rejected the feed and bowed before the blessed sacrament.
Eucharistic miracles are amazing, but perhaps we should marvel more at the Eucharistic effect in making saints. Anthony’s conviction that the Eucharist united him to Christ fueled his powerful evangelization. The Eucharist transformed this man into a saint, and we must trust that it is transforming us into holy saints. Even at this time when many of us cannot receive due to the pandemic, the graces of the sacrament are still at work making us holy. Like Anthony, we are to become a Eucharistic people, a thanksgiving offering for God and others.

Projects & repairs on campus - Dulak Masonry continues to work on the tuckpointing of our church building. While the repairs needed were a little more extensive than originally thought, we are happy to be able to make our building safe from future water damage. - This week MadHatter Chimney Sweep was here to clean and inspect the chimney on the Rectory. - Continued rectory maintenance projects included touchup painting on garage & rectory windows by our expert painter and seminarian, Steven. We are so grateful to the parish family for their continued contributions to the Centennial Campaign. Through your generosity these projects have helped to make necessary repairs to our campus that should last us many years to come.

Fr. Michael McGivney: Coronavirus victim and soon-to-be Blessed Looking for a saint in these Covid-19-troubled times? Look no further than Venerable Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, who died during a coronavirus pandemic in 1890.
The coronavirus pandemic has turned our lives upside down and taken away some of the securities upon which our society was based.
In these difficult times, many are looking for help to make sense of it all. The time-honored Catholic tradition of invoking men and women of proven holiness to intercede with the Father for us offers one path toward peace and deeper faith in God.
Coronavirus victim With that in mind, perhaps Venerable Father Michael McGivney is a good option.
The American priest died from pneumonia in 1890 during what some in the scientific community now say was likely a coronavirus pandemic. Some 1 million people died in that outbreak.
Pope Francis recently recognized a miracle attributed to Fr. McGivney, clearing the way for his beatification. Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service organization of Catholic laymen.
Fr. McGivney, pray for us In an interview with Vatican News, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said the recognition of the miracle comes at a propitious time for the Church.
Fr. McGivney “suffered and died like so many Americans and other people around the world,” he said.
“So, when we say now ‘Fr. McGivney, pray for us’, we are going to have somebody who has been there and been through this suffering. I think his prayers will be very personal.”
Confirmation of his example Mr. Anderson said Fr. McGivney’s upcoming beatification “confirms what we thought about his saintly life and his inspiration for millions of men for more than a century.”
From humble beginnings in 1882 in a parish in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus now count over 16,000 councils in countries throughout the world.
Knights from the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, Canada, France, Poland, Ukraine, and Korea can look to their organization’s founder with confidence in his saintly example.
“Almost every day we have a deepening of our understanding of what it means to live a life of unity and fraternity, and we added the principle of patriotism, which was important to Fr. McGivney,” said Mr. Anderson.
Fraternal charity Citing Pope Francis’ frequent call for a more “fraternal” society, the Supreme Knight said the soon-to-be Blessed had a similar approach to charity.
“It’s not just about writing a bigger check or putting a few more dollars or euro in the collection plate,” he said. “It’s about looking at your neighbor as a brother or a sister, and when they are in difficulty, to help them out.”
Community for the Catholic layman Throughout history, great religious orders have arisen to meet a need within the Church.
“What about the Catholic layman?” wondered Mr. Anderson. “What about the man who can’t take a vow of poverty because he is married, has a family, and has to work in the world and support his family?”
Fr. Michael McGivney, he said, offers the Catholic layman a fraternal community where he “can meet other men who consider themselves to be brothers, who will help each other, who are concerned for each other, and can also have a certain spiritual life together.”
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said this is the key to the success of the Knights of Columbus.
