THE PREZ SEZ:

The merry month of May is just around the corner, and with it suchMaverick events as the Rickett's camping trip to south Texas and BarryGibbs' Hill Country Venture. I hope that each and every one of you willmake an effort to participate in these activities. Exact dates and timesappear elsewhere in this issue.

April 22 and 23 saw the culmination of much planning and hard work onbehalf of Captain Barbara Horn and her Rustler's Run National RallyeCheckpoint Crew (Charles Davis, Lieutenant; Bob Horn, Barry Gibbs, Earland Connie Bauger, Nancy Diasselliss, Richard Corbeille, Jim and LindaSidwell, Arden Russell, John and Rosey Balding, Ziggy Pflaster and yourstruly). To make a long story short we got a glimpse of some unfamiliarcountryside, sunburned roses, and the coveted "Best Checkpoint Award" asvoted by the rallyists as outstanding crew. Needless to say, I am veryproud of these people and the honor brought to Maverick Region as aresult of their team effort.

Mr; Wilmer Crum of the Volkswagen dealership by the same name located inMineral Wells recently confirmed that he will open "Green Oaks Porsche-Audi" in Fort Worth. His temporary location shall be 101 West SeminaryDrive and the opening is slated for Tuesday, May 2nd. The temporarylocation is directly south across Seminary Drive from Seminary SouthShopping Center. Why not drop in on Mr. Crum and tell him "Howdy" andhelp give him a Maverick welcome to the area.

Leon Cowan tells me that picking-up orders of Maverick Region name tagswas somewhat slow last meeting. Leon will have these name tags availablenext meeting on the 12th of May. As soon as we can take delivery on.additional quantities of the discs applied to the face of the tags, wecan accept more orders for the name tags. If you have previously placedan order for a name tag, please make an effort to pick up same and wearit proudly.

Board Meeting will be Tuesday, 9 May, 7:30 P.M., Woodland West RecreationCenter, Pantego.

From the Editor's Desk:

There has been a great deal of discussion among the club officersconcerning the size print used in the Slipstream. As of this print-ing, we have not come to a firm decision. As you can see (I hope)we have decided to use the small print this month because of the costfactor. Next month we hope to have a compromise between this printand that used in former issues.

On a personal note, next month's issue will be the last published bythe current editors for three months. Due to a job commitment we aregoing to the Land of Porsches (California) for the summer. Nextmonth's issue will give details of publishing arrangements such asdeadline dates, to whom articles should be submitted, etc. Pleasebe sure to watch for this information.

Articles for the June issue are to be sent to us as usual.DEADLINE FOR JUNE SLIPSTREAM.. ... MAY 26th.

POINT VENTURE COUNTDOWN

If you have not yet sent in your registration form for Point Venture, remember that the deadline is May 13th. When you do register, pleaselet me know if there is anyone in particular that you wish to share atownhouse with so that we can make the necessary arrangements.

I have had several questions concerning the $10.00 per person registra-tion fee. This will be used for your entrance fee to the various eventsthat you may wish to enter, and the remainder will be applied to yourroom expenses at Point Venture. Several people who have registered aregoing to be able to stay only two days - but it was planned that way -so if for any reason you feel that you can stay for only two days thatwill just mean that you will have two days of fun instead of three!

So - get with your friends and start planning - ITS ONLY A FEW WEEKS AWAY!

NORTHPARK AUTOCROSS RESULTS

If you missed the Autocross on April 23 at Northpark in Dallas, youmissed the most exciting autocross the Dallas-Ft. Worth area has had ina long time. The Dallas Times Herald, Jas. K. Wilson and the NorthparkMerchants Association sponsored the event and the Equipe Rapide SportsCar Club put it on. No entry fee was charged, trophies were given, andeach entrant received a dash plaque for his car. Results of classeswhich included Porsches are listed below.

The best part of the event was the runoff for the $100.00 Jas. K. Wilsongift certificate for the Top Time of Day award. The fastest five carsfrom the regulation runs were pitted against each other for two additionalruns to determine the fastest time. Charles Davis messed-up his secondregulation run and let some guy in a Datsun 240Z into the top five. BarryGibbs had his hands full just trying to keep up with red bathtubs andgreen VW's. It all came down to the last run of the day when HermanSeymour (240Z) put it all together and beat Bob Horn by .05 seconds towin all the marbles.

It was fun! It was exciting! You should have been there.

THE CAPACITIVE DISCHARGE IGNITIONby Jerry Kendrick

(Reprinted from the San Diego region newsletter)

This article is written as a continuation to the Tech Note on Elec-tronic Ignitions, which appeared in the November issue of WindblownWitness, a San Diego regional publication.

Since publication of the Tech Note, many PCA members have asked myopinion of various capacitive discharge systems. One particular unitwhich I am most often questioned about is the Perma-Tune System manufac-tured by Aero Design Products Corporation of Newport Beach, California.

At the time of my first article, I had bench-tested four popular brandsof capacitive discharge systems, but never the Perma-Tune unit. Beinga skeptic, I never take for face value claims advertised in circularsdisseminated by companies. They tend to mislead, exaggerate and be veryfavorable toward their own product. With a skeptical attitude, I setout to learn what Perma-Tune was all about.

In March 1972, I visited the Aero Design Products Corporation, NewportBeach. I toured the assembly area and was treated to a comprehensivebench test of their system. Electrical comparisons were made withstandard Bosch units and Perma-Tune units. Test results dramaticallyindicated the Perma-Tune unit to be superior in performance to the stockBosch system.

Being a part of the scientific community, I was impressed with thescientific approach used in design of the Perma-Tune unit.

The Porsche factory in Stutgart is presently evaluating the Perma-Tuneunit. There is a possibility that the unit may appear on the Porsche asstandard equipment.

Richie Ginther has been in close cooperation with Aero Design Productsin the development of ignition systems for his race cars. For theLeMans car, a highly modified 911S, Richie Ginther incorporated twoPerma-Tune units, complementing the dual ignition system.

The level of sophistication attained by the Perma-Tune unit is indicativeof the interest generated by the people of Richie Ginther's caliberand of the Porsche factory.

Here are some advantages Perma-Tune has over its competitors. The out-put of the coil maintains a high, very flat energy response throughoutthe RPM range. This results in smoother, low RPM operation, with factacceleration and without the flat spots and mises at high RPM. Perma-Tune does not use a conventional converter, enabling the unit to drawconsiderably less current than most systems. A Perma-Tune unit powereda Porsche on 4.5 volts battery potential. There is no unnecessaryenergy loss during short circuiting of the converter, as used byconventional capacitive discharge systems, and Bosch. The absence of aconventional converter prevents the build-up of heat, enabling Perma-Tune units to have longer, more reliable service. They have a three-year, no-mileage guaranty on the unit.

The output circuit is designed to virtually eliminate the hazard ofinadvertent or deliberate shorting in the coil area. The noise-freewaveform provided for tachometer hook-up eliminates the problems usuallyassociated with tachometer operation. The electrical characteristicsof the Perma-Tune unit are impressive.

At Holtville, a California desert community, the site of our 1972spring time trials, temperature exceeded 115 F on the air strip. ThePerma-Tune unit performed faultlessly at high engine compartmenttemperatures and the G rates associated with a 911S at speed. Inci-dentally, Ed Blankenship of Volkswagen Pacific finished 10th overallin the Mint 400, an off-the-road race held near Las Vegas, Nevada. Hewas driving a Volkswagen Highjumper using a Perma-Tune unit.

Aero Design Products can be proud of the excellent packaging techniquesincorporated in the construction of their unit. The structural andelectrical integrity of the unit is based on sound engineering prin-ciples and practice.

I have repaired and modified many Bosch CD units. I am cognizant ofthe deficiencies inherent in the Bosch system. The Perma-Tune unitshould be considered by the seriously intentioned Porsche owner whodemands maximum performance out of his Porsche under a variety ofoperating conditions.

My intent in writing this article is to give the average Porscheenthusiast guidance in the selection of a suitable CD system, mindfulof cost factors. Most conventional systems offer long point and pluglife; Perma-Tune meets the requirement plus offering increasedperformance.

The Perma-Tune unit also offers a RPM limiter which does away with theharsh limiting induced by the Bosch method.

Perma-Tune can be purchased at Porsche Audi dealers under Part No.P-911-605 for $70.00, with the option of the RPM limiter at an addi-tional $25.00.

In my opinion, Perma-Tune is a good investment in performance.

Jerry Kendrick

911 TECH SESSION - March 20, 1972

The equipment and facilities of Central Volkswagen are what every shade

tree mechanic dreams of having at his disposal. The possibilities for

maintaining a 911 made available with equipment that raises the Porsche

to any desired height with the flick of a lever or oil and lubricant

available with the press of a trigger on a hose suspended from the ceil-

ing are almost endless - if tinkering with a Porsche turns you on. There

was even a guy there who paints pin stripes on VW's. This operation was

done freehand with a flat brush - amazing'

Charles Davis and Barry Gibbs covered the periodic maintainance of the

911. Charley's 911S and Barry's 911T were on the racks - the "S" with

its engine shining in red, chrome, and flat black, and the "T" with the

wheels well scrubbed and brake calipers shining. Charley's engine was

unbelievable - he could hold a tech session on the process of transform-

ing the magnesium and plastic of a flat six into polished perfection. It

made one wonder if he ever did anything else.

After everyone had gaped at Charley's engine, he showed us how to assure

that the six cylinders each fire when they are supposed to fire. He did

this with the use of his chrome plated timing light. Those S's sure make

a neat sound when they are blapped to six thou. With a flick of thatlittle lever, the car was raised to a convenient height for a quick oil

change and then lowered for a spark plug check. The Fan V-belt andinjection spur belt were checked for proper tension and then followed the

valve adjustment. This adjustment required the most time and skill. About

this time Charley started breathing hard and became entirely engrossedin his engine, so Barry started his spiel.

Barry began by demonstrating how to change brake pads. It was possibleto do this job on his car without getting one's hands dirty - highlyunrealistic! While at the front wheel, Barry removed the bearing cap(it was firmly mounted) using a pseudo-Porsche manual technique. Withthis operation completed, he removed the outer wheel bearing and discussedpacking the bearing and acceptable greases. A problem that seems to be

common to Porsche owners was discussed next - wheel alignment andbalancing. The solution? Take the car to a pro! Barry clued us in on

sway bars (which size to get for varies driving requirement). He hadsome good advice on the rear bar - i.e. let the dealer install it andstay away from B & B! Everything had gone smoothly until someone asked

about the handbrake adjustment. After a little consultation with Charleyand with the use of his penlite and the factory manual, Barry demonstratedthe procedure.

It was well worth a 911 owner'sBarry did a good job.

time to attend the session. Charles and

Richard Corbeille

JOYS OF BEING AN EDITOR

Getting out a publication is no picnic. If we print jokes, people say we are silly; If we don't, we are too serious. If we stick close to the office,

We ought to be around hustling material; If we go out,

We should be on the job in the office. If we don't print contributions, we don't appreciate genius; And if we do, the paper is filled with junk!If we edit the other fellow's write-up, we're too critical; If we don't, we're asleep. If we clip items from other papers, we are too lazy;If we don't, we're stuck with our own stuff'.Now, likely as not, some guy will say we swiped this
