Swim, bike, run, repeat.Triple Threat Triathlon Series Q&A with a seasoned triathlete

The Triple Threat Triathlon Se-ries is coming your way! Each race in the series begins with a half-mile swim in American Lake, followed by a 15-mile bike ride across the installation and a 3-mile run. It’s pretty awesome just to complete the event – so sign up and start training today!

The Triple Threat Triathlon Se-ries is scheduled for Saturdays, June 19, July 17 and Aug. 21. If you are a beginner, this is the distance for you, but our course will test even a seasoned triathlete. The most im-portant things to acquire are a wet suit, road bike and a good pair of running shoes. Then there’s train-ing, training and more training.

These races are open to the public. Register as an elite competi-tor, an age-group competitor or be on a relay team where one partici-

pant swims, one bikes and one runs. For more information and registration, go to JBLMMWR.com.

I sat down with Dr. (Lt. Col) Mark Potter recently and “talked triathlon.” Potter is assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center and is a regular par-ticipant in the Triple Threat Triathlon Series. Read on to get insight on what it takes to be a triathlete.

Why did you decide to do triathlons?I was introduced to triathlons while

stationed at Fort Lewis in 1997. Guy Lemire, the “venerable old man” of the Army triathlon introduced myself and Art Mathisen, who subsequently went on to compete at the highest levels of triath-lon. Our first competitive event was the Fort Lewis Triple Threat Series the next year. I remember how I couldn’t feel my legs after getting off the bike, while Art almost drowned. Nonetheless, we loved it and couldn’t feed the passion fast enough. Before long, Art and I were meeting for workouts before 4 each morning.

Do you have any expectations of competing at the All Army or the Army World Class level?

I competed in the Armed Forces Competitions for five years from 2000 to 2004. A couple of those years, I earned a slot on the CISM team (they pick the top six finishers out of the competition to compete in the World Military Triathlon Championships). If you keep on pushing yourself in this sport, there will come a time when you realize, “I’m not that fast.” In this competition, you’re up against Olympic-quality athletes. My reality check came when I exited the water in a competition in Slovenia and didn’t see any bikes in the transition area. My first thought was

Sign up now and start training for the Triple Threat Triathlon Series! You have three chances to swim, bike and run your way to the finish line – Saturdays, June 18, July 17 and Aug. 21. Dr. (Lt. Col.) Mark Potter, pictured left, has been a triathlete for more than a decade.

that everybody quit and went home, but the reality was that I was the last one out of the water. Somehow I convinced myself that I just had a bad swim and that I could compete with these guys if I brought my A game. For one year I trained my butt off, but the next year, in

Estonia, the same thing happened. Not only was I the slowest swimmer, these guys were finishing their 10Ks in 30 to 31 minutes. With that, I concluded my efforts to compete internationally. This truly was a humbling experience, but it was great fun.

How does one start to get ready for a triathlon?

There are many approaches to get ready, and through experience you will know which ones work for you and which don’t. For sprint and Olympic distances, the race will be over before you deplete your stores of glycogen. Anything longer than an Olympic distance, a good nutri-tion plan is vital. The most impor-tant thing before a race is to f ind a bathroom. Next, people have a lot of crazy nervous rituals or habits they go through before a race. Most are silly; I may have a few. Try not to get caught up in it. If the race allows wetsuits, wear one. Wear goggles that don’t leak or fog too easily. Make sure your bike tires are not rubbing against

your brakes, and do a quick check of your bike. Knowing where your bike is when you come out of the water is important. Lay out your running and biking shoes, your helmet and glasses on a towel next to your bike in the transition area.

What’s the most important thing to know about doing triathlon?

In every triathlon, try to find a swim-mer who’s a little faster than you and get right behind them. If you can’t do that, settle into a comfortable rhythm and stay on course, meaning keep good lines. I don’t think you win your race in the water, but I think you can lose it there. On the bike, if you’re in a sprint or Olympic distance triathlon, go as hard as you can go because you can always suffer through a run. Beyond Olympic-distance, if you go too hard on the bike, your run will fall apart.

What advice can you give to a new triathlete?

A great triathlon to begin with is a sprint triathlon, like the Triple Threat Triathlon Series. Just sign up for one and do it. The sport sells itself. The only thing expensive about the sport is the bike. How much to spend on a bike? Once you go more than $2,000, it’s my opinion that incremental costs of the bike don’t equal faster times, especially if you’re just begin-ning in the sport.

Interactive Customer Evaluation

Being well into fiscal year 2010, your use of ICE is at the heart of the success story. Of the more than 3,200 comments, Joint Base Lewis-Mc-Chord received an overall satisfaction rating of 75 percent. More impor-tantly, 94 percent of all comments were reviewed and had follow-ups conducted. Additionally, 97 percent of those customers who requested a response received one from a manager. It is important that you are provided feedback on your comments. Ask for a response, and you will receive one.

With 295 service providers listed on the JBLM ICE Site, it is hard to single out only a few comments each month. Working hard to provide the JBLM community with services that improve our day-to-day lives, read some com-ments about these facilities follow. First, a service that is essential for the everyday work we do – the Network

Enterprise Center – is highlighted. Here’s some of what you had to say this month.

Network Enterprise Center Web services“The layout is really great ... very appealing and user-friendly.”

Automation“My unit requested ports to be activated, and Christopher Ford arrived to assist. He was very polite and helpful in getting this mission completed and was able to process other work orders and assist in our mission.”

Telephone service“Scott Swanson provided outstanding customer service when he assisted our of-fice. He is professional and courteous, and reflects favorably on your organization.”

Sports Wilson Sports & Fitness Center“Steve is a great addition to the staff. The floors are super clean and I appreciate that! Rich is also very personable in the personal training department.”

Soldiers Field House“As a regular user of Soldiers Field House, I would like to commend Liza and her staff for the outstanding job they do. They consistently show respect and a positive

attitude toward all patrons.”

Eagles Pride Golf Course “Eagles Pride Golf Course is in the best condition it has been in the past five years. The improvement is no-ticeable immediately upon entering the parking lot.”

Interactive Customer Evalu-ation is your way to have your voice heard. JBLM wants to know what you think about your latest visit to a facility or special event.

Were you satisfied with the service?

Did it meet your needs?

Whether you had a great expe-rience to share or have a sugges-tion, visit https://ice.disa.mil. Your

voice will be heard – your comments are sent straight to managers and the command group. ICE is also acces-sible through Army OneStop kiosks, which are located across JBLM Lewis. The more feedback you pro-vide, the better JBLM facilities and staff can serve you.

We want to hear from you!ICE and Facebook provide opportunities for feedback
