Smile because it happened.” Mary Ethel, Molly Kate, and I praise God for our 3 years here. Transitions are never easy, but I am at peace with my decision to leave the nest of pastoral ministry. I want to soar like an eagle into a new way of serving God that will be life-giving instead of life-draining (Isaiah 40:31). I have a writing project that I feel led to start working on this summer. I look forward to writing something besides a weekly sermon and a monthly newsletter article. I also look forward to having the time to write, knowing that sickness, death, and other crises in the church will not interrupt or overload my schedule. Pastor Stuart Albee is coming to lead you for the next few years. As much as you loved Boo Hankins, you let me be your pastor the day I moved into the parsonage. The day the Albees move to Greeneville, let Stuart be your pastor with his particular gifts and talents. I once was in the shadow of a former pastor who lived nearby. He wouldn’t let go of the church and the church wouldn’t let go of him. My first month there, he made a hospital visit 2 days before I found out my church member was sick; neither he nor the family called me, leaving me to hear about it through the grapevine. I spent my first 18 months there being the “warm up act” for every funeral and wedding because the church kept asking this former pastor back to do “the main part.” I was appointed as the pastor in charge, yet the church treated me like his associate pastor for weddings and funerals. I will support Pastor Stuart by not interfering with his ability to build relationships with you. Once Stuart becomes Trinity’s pastor, I will not return to lead or assist with any weddings, funerals, or baptisms. If a pastoral need arises during Stuart’s first week, call him because I will no longer be doing pastoral ministry. Moving day is always the best time to make a clean break. At my last church, 2 members died between moving day and my first Sunday, so on Monday and Tuesday I had both funerals. The previous pastor didn’t return for either service because it wasn’t his responsibility to conduct those funerals. Both families let me be their pastor even though I had just moved to town. On June 1 my family will begin renting a house on Old Shiloh Road. Because we will remain in Greeneville (at least in the short-run), I have already promised Stuart that we won’t return to worship at Trinity for awhile so that he and his family can become established here. Also, my identity will no longer be “Pastor David”, so personally I need to worship elsewhere for a season to get used to my new role of just being “David.” However, down the road at a mutually agreeable time, I am willing to return to preach here if your pastor invites me. Lay people can preach, so I can speak without being in the role of pastor. Such invitations are made in advance, so my schedule won’t be interrupted on short notice. And sermons are for the benefit of everyone, not just one particular family as in the case of a wedding, funeral, or baptism. As our time together draws to a close, I hope that the friendships we have made here will continue. Please pray for the Albees as they prepare to be your new parsonage family. Thank you for your prayers and support as we transition to a new way of serving God. Blessings, David

Pastor’s Remarks

A Word from the Pastor

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” Mary Ethel, Molly Kate, and I praise God for our 3

years here. Transitions are never easy, but I am at peace with my decision to leave the nest of pastoral ministry. I want

to soar like an eagle into a new way of serving God that will be life-giving instead of life-draining (Isaiah 40:31). I have a writing project that I feel led to start working on this summer. I look forward to writing something

besides a weekly sermon and a monthly newsletter article. I also look forward to having the time to write, knowing that

sickness, death, and other crises in the church will not interrupt or overload my schedule.

Pastor Stuart Albee is coming to lead you for the next few years. As much as you loved Boo Hankins, you let

me be your pastor the day I moved into the parsonage. The day the Albees move to Greeneville, let Stuart be your pastor

with his particular gifts and talents.

I once was in the shadow of a former pastor who lived nearby. He wouldn’t let go of the church and the church

wouldn’t let go of him. My first month there, he made a hospital visit 2 days before I found out my church member was

sick; neither he nor the family called me, leaving me to hear about it through the grapevine. I spent my first 18 months

there being the “warm up act” for every funeral and wedding because the church kept asking this former pastor back to

do “the main part.” I was appointed as the pastor in charge, yet the church treated me like his associate pastor for

weddings and funerals.

I will support Pastor Stuart by not interfering with his ability to build relationships with you. Once Stuart

becomes Trinity’s pastor, I will not return to lead or assist with any weddings, funerals, or baptisms. If a pastoral need

arises during Stuart’s first week, call him because I will no longer be doing pastoral ministry. Moving day is always the

best time to make a clean break. At my last church, 2 members died between moving day and my first Sunday, so on

Monday and Tuesday I had both funerals. The previous pastor didn’t return for either service because it wasn’t his

responsibility to conduct those funerals. Both families let me be their pastor even though I had just moved to town.

On June 1 my family will begin renting a house on Old Shiloh Road. Because we will remain in Greeneville

(at least in the short-run), I have already promised Stuart that we won’t return to worship at Trinity for awhile so that he

and his family can become established here. Also, my identity will no longer be “Pastor David”, so personally I need to

worship elsewhere for a season to get used to my new role of just being “David.”

However, down the road at a mutually agreeable time, I am willing to return to preach here if your pastor

invites me. Lay people can preach, so I can speak without being in the role of pastor. Such invitations are made in

advance, so my schedule won’t be interrupted on short notice. And sermons are for the benefit of everyone, not just one

particular family as in the case of a wedding, funeral, or baptism.

As our time together draws to a close, I hope that the friendships we have made here will continue. Please pray

for the Albees as they prepare to be your new parsonage family. Thank you for your prayers and support as we transition

to a new way of serving God.

Blessings,

David

Thank you so much to everyone who helped prepare food,
