    Birthof

    Lakshmi(Mythological Story)

Once a huge war broke outbetween the Gods and Demons. TheDemons or Rakshasas were able todefeat the Devas lead by Indra. Thenthe Gods went toseek the advice ofBrahma who told

them that the onlyway for them todefeat the Demons isby becomingimmortal. He advisedthem that bychurning the ocean,Amruta can beextracted and with its

    help, the Gods couldbecome immortal.

The Gods thenwent to Vishnu who helped them inchurning the ocean (samudramanthan). But when they began to doso with the help of Mandarachalmountain, it began to sink, so Vishnu

took the form of a tortoise (KurmaAvatar) and supported the mountain.

The King of Serpents, Vasuki was usedas the churning rope. Both the Godsand Demons took part in the churningof the ocean.

During the churning,Kamadhenu, the wishful cow was thefirst to emerge and it was presented tothe Rishis for their Yaga and Yagnas.

Then Varuni Devi, Kalpavriksha(wishful tree) and the apsaras emergedfollowed by the Moon. Shiva took theMoon on his forehead. Then a hugeamount of poison also emerged whichcould have killed everyone, But Shiva

drunk all of it butmanaged to keepit within his

throat.(This is thereason he iscalledNeelakantha ashis throat turnedblue due to theeffect of poison). Some poisonwere taken up by

    the serpents.

    In the finalstage, Dhanvantri

emerged holding the Amrutha and thenLakshmi emerged holding lotus in herhands. This is how Lakshmi emergedout of the Samudra Manthan and shemarried Vishnu.

    Significance

    ofGayatri Mantra

    Om Bhuur-Bhuvah SvahTat-Savitur-Varennyam |

Bhargo Devasya DhiimahiDhiyo Yo Nah Pracodayaat ||

We as humans are blessed to havethe Gayatri Mantra. The Mantra was the

result of years of penance of RishiVishwamitra who later passed it to

humanity. The true glory of GayatriMantra cannot be explained is words, but we would like to make a humbleeffort to outline its importance in themodern world.

The Gayatri Mantra is ageless andtimeless. In earlier days, it was closelyguarded within a particular community

and even women were restricted accessto this powerful mantra. But with age,the society became more liberal andnow, anyone who wishes can chant thismantra. There is no restriction of anyage, caste or sex to chanting thismantra.

Also, it is a myth that you require

initiation into this mantra. Noteveryone in this world is lucky enoughto have a Guru who can initiate youinto this mantra. With this regard, youcan practice this mantra on your own.The only thing that requires attention isthe proper pronounciation of themantra.

There is a reason for this. Mostmantras are designed to vibrate in acertain frequency based on the wordsused in the mantra. So, if youpronounce it incorrectly, the vibrationmay not match with what was actuallyintended. Chanting Gayatri Mantra for30 minutes a day can create a protectiveshield around you for the whole day.

Chanting Gayatri regularly helpsyou to upgrade yourself constantly at all

levels of the body, mind and soul. Youwould move from Tamas to Rajas andfrom Rajas to Saatvic and further gobeyond Saatvic.

    Thoughts on Gayatri Mantra

    ShankaracharyaIt is beyond human

competence todescribe the glory ofGayatri. Nothing isso important in theworld as to havewisdom.

This wisdom by which self realisation isattained through divine insight is inspired

by Gayatri. Gayatri is the initial mantra. It is an incarnation to destroy sins and

    promote virtues.-------------------------------------------------

RamakrishnaParamahamsaI tell people that dueto the sadhana of

    Gayatri, hardausteries have beenrenderedunnecessary.

The greatest of siddhis can be obtained bythe japa of Gayatri. The Gayatri Mantrais small but its powers immeasurable.

Swami VivekanandaGayatri is a mantra of

righteous wisdom andtherefore, it has beencalled a be-jewelledcrown of all themantras.

    -------------------------------------------------

    Rabindranath Tagore

It is the GayatriMantra which hasawakened India andwhich is so simple ascan be chanted in onebreath. There is noscope for any logical

discussion, difference of opinion or anydispute in the study of this holy mantra.

    SindhurDharana

Sindhur also called Kumkum is mostcommonly applied by married womenin Hindu tradition. We have seen

women wearing Sindhur since ages.Have you ever wondered why marriedwomen wear Sindhur and generallywear kumkum everyday.

Generally Sindhur is applied on theparting of the hair by married women. It is believed to bestow long life to thehusband. Kumkum is considered to be

the Goddess Shakti and she wouldprotect the life of the women and her

    husband.

If you look at this aspect scientifically,Sindhur which is vermillion is said toactivate the sexual nerves in a women. This is the reason that women startwearing sindhur after marriage. Alsothis might be the reason why widowswere advised against wearing Sindhur

    in ancient times.

Replying to a similar question during adiscourse, Sri Sri Ravishankar gave avery interesting explanation. Thesindhur or kumkum which wegenerally apply on the centre of theforehead activates the pineal orpituitary glands.

There are seven chakras or energycenters in our body and the AgneyaChakra is located in the center of theforehead. It extends till the point wherethe eyebrows meet. When Sindhur, orturmeric or sandalwood paste is appliedon this point, the vibrations stimulatethe whole body and the mind remains

    calm and centered.

It will calm the mind of the individual. Not just these, it will also make theperson look more beautiful. Especiallywomen look elegant when they wearkumkum on the forehead. It is the bestornament , a women can wear.

hot tears drop rolled from his eyes andfell onto the ground and the mother

hand to destroy our fears andlimitations.

There is another legend of Rudraksha;Lord Shiva cannot see the miseries andsufferings of people therefore he startedshedding hot drops of tears. Naturemother then transformed his tears bygiving birth to the Rudraksh trees.

Rudraksha is a Sanskrit word and it hasbeen named after Rudra i.e. Lord Shiva.Rudra is referred as one who relievesothers from pain and sufferings.

Ancient Vedas speak on variouscircumstances leading to creating ofRudra. Legend of Rudraksha portraysLord Shiva wearing rosary of Rudraksha

beads on his head, hands and arms. Justlike how we grow a plant by nurturingwith water, similarly to please LordShiva, Rudrajapa is essential. Legend ofRudraksha tell us by doing so one getsrelieve from sufferings and pain.

    The Blind Menand the

ElephantOnce upon a time, in a small village, people used to fight among themselvesabout Gods and different religions.

When they could not resolve theproblem , they approached a Sadhu tofind out the truth.

The Sadhu asked his disciples to get alarge elephant and bring the six blindmen who were living in the village. Heasked the blind men to discover thething and tell him what they felt.

The first blind man touched the leg ofthe elephant and said that it is a tree.

The second blind man touched theelephant's stomach and said it is a

wall. The third one touched ear of theelephant and said it is a fan. Thefourth one touched the tail of theelephant and said it is a rope Thefifth one who touched the tusks of theelephant said it is a spear. The lastone touched the elephant's trunk andsaid it is a snake

The villagers saw this whole episodealong with the Sadhu. Then the Sadhuasked the villagers that even though

each one touched thesame animal, they allgave different answers ,But who was right ?

Why did they givedifferent answers ?

The villagers replied thatall of them were right. But were not able toexplain why they gavedifferent answers.

The Sadhu explained Itis because, each one

could only see a part ofthe elephant and no one saw the wholeanimal. Similarly no one will be able tosee God or understand religioncompletely.

The Sadhu taught that we shouldrespect all religions and beliefs as ourunderstanding is not 100%.
