More than 30 years ago KC Auction & Appraisal Company founder Jason R. Roske was selling found objects to the
neighbors in his hometown of Cold Spring, MN. He was about 10 years old at the time and didn’t realize that he was laying the groundwork of a career finding value in the unexpected.
Since then Jason has owned an antique shop, travelled the country setting up at antique shows, was an original eBay Power Seller and helped manage estate “Tag sales”.About 8 years ago Jason realized that Kansas City needed the services of a good auction house. He found a venue in Kansas City’s histor-ic West Bottoms and went after it with passion, determination and purpose. Jason has always had a passion for antiques, collectibles and es-tate items and now he could put that passion to

work for 100s of clients a year. Jason was deter-mined to run an auction house that would thrive because of word of mouth. Jason’s purpose was to help clients receive the best value for their as-sets whatever they were.
The best option for clients and families alike is to find a qualified auctioneer who will work for the best interest of all parties. When potential clients say that they have sold an item to a dealer “And got really good money for it.” How can they be sure? A single offer from a single buyer. How can the seller benefit here? It is by nature an adver-sarial relationship. A dealer wants to pay the least amount possible to further his or her profit mar-gin. If they can buy an item from you for $50 why would they pay $100? Let the auction method find several potential buyers and watch the prices rise and the cost of the auctioneer becomes the best investment ever made. There is nothing more ex-pensive than a cheap, or uneducated, auctioneer.
Jason says, “It’s always fun when we talk with a client after an auction and we know there was something destined for the trash that sold for big money. At our last online auction with iGavel we sold a table for a client. They hoped it might bring a couple of hundred dollars. When the bidding was all said and done it sold for $1,860 to a buyer from California! They were happy indeed.”
There are many stories like that in the KC Auc-tion Company’s history. One of Jason’s favorites is about a couple of paintings that a regular con-
signor brought in. “Steve always brings us estate lots. Boxes of crystal, china, miscellaneous and always, always a stack or two of pictures. Most of these are generic decorative items, loose picture frames, a nice print or two and related. One week Steve comes in with his regular load but we no-ticed that there were two paintings by a Russian artist by the name of David Burliuk. We told Steve that we were going to hold these paintings to sell in a fine art auction. When Steve came in the night of the fine art auction he didn’t even know which paintings where his. He was extremely happy though when his two “Picture Frames” sold for $2,520 and $3,150 respectively to buyers from Florida and New York.”
Jason and his staff pride themselves on know-ing which items from your estate will find eager buyers from around the country and around the world. The vast majority of auctions that the KC Auction Company offers are online only. “Why limit our buyers to the Kansas City region?” Ja-son says. “There are definitely areas of the market that benefit from live, in person bidding, but we are finding a very strong market for select items online with much less exposure and risk for our clients. Last year we had to postpone two auc-tions for our clients due to blizzards here in Kan-sas City. When the bidding is all online a blizzard is great! Everyone is home with nothing to do so they sit at their computers.”
How does the staff at the KC Auction Company know what will sell well for you online? Experience matters especially with antiques and fine art.

Jason has been a full time professional in this industry for more than 20 years and during that time has created a reference library in excess of 1000 volumes. In addition to decades of on the job training and research, Jason has completed his GPPA (Graduate, Personal Property Apprais-er) coursework through the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) and has completed the 1st of 3 years in the prestigious Certified Auctioneers Institute (CAI) program also offered by the NAA. The CAI is an intensive, executive development program covering many aspects of the auction industry. Jason is also an associate member of the International Society of Appraisers (ISA) and the KC Auction Company recently sponsored the ISA National Conference in Kansas City. Jason has also worked with KCPT (public television) during their Antique Appraisal Fairs and he was an expert on National Geographic TV’s “Ameri-ca’s Lost Treasures.”
Their manager Amy Abshier-Reyes has a Bach-elor of Fine Arts Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and has worked in the antique and estate business for more than 12 years in both Califor-nia and Kansas City. Amy has been with the KC Auction Company since 2006 and is a member of the Certified Appraisers Guild of America (CAGA) and is also an associate member of the ISA.
David Schulman heads up their Real Estate and business liquidation division and has sold over 150 residential and commercial properties in the last 10 years. David previously worked with one of the region’s largest auction and real estate firms and is a licensed auctioneer and broker in both Kansas and Missouri.
