ICTSI Croatian terminal gears up for P3 Alliance of CMA CGM, Maersk and MSC with capacity expansion

The 8,500-TEU capacity CMA CGM Cendrillon, the largest vessel to berth in the Port of Rijeka, had its maiden call last 29 May at ICTSI’s Adriatic Gate Container Terminal.

CMA CGM Cendrillon, the largest vessel to call in the Port of Rijeka, Croatia, recently had its maiden call at Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT).

The 8,500-TEU capacity megaboxship docked at Berth 2 of the AGCT last May 29. CMA CGM Cendrillon, owned by French megaliner CMA CGM, is a vessel chartered in the direct weekly service, Phoenician Express (BEX2), which links Asia and the Northern Adriatic ports. CMA CGM and Maersk

Line jointly run the service, deploying 10 vessels.Cenrdrillon plies the ports of Shanghai, Busan, Chiwan,

Hong Kong, Tanjung Pelapas, Port Said, Beirut, Trieste, Koper, Rijeka, Pork Said, Jeddah, Port Kelang, Singapore and Shanghai. The duration of the ship’s round voyage is 70 days.

The deployment of Cendrillon, which has a length overall (LOA) of 334 meters, is a move to increase capacity of the service. BEX2 vessels have an average of 6,000-TEU

capacities and LOA of 320 meters. The capacity increase is seen as a transition for the launch of the larger P3 Alliance, a joint service of CMA CGM, Maersk and MSC, which is planned to start calling Rijeka in the second half of 2014.

In anticipation of growing volumes, ICTSI and Port Authority Rijeka constructed a new 628-meter quay at the AGCT. Aside from the capability to service deep draft mainline vessels, overall terminal capacity was expanded to 450,000 TEUs annually. Capacity will be further increased to 600,000 TEUs in early 2015 when civil works on the terminal’s new intermodal yard are completed.

Equipment fleet was upgraded with the commissioning of two new post-Panamax quay cranes, six rubber tired gantries and two rail mounted gantries for the intermodal yard. The Navis N4 terminal operating system was also rolled out.

On the other hand, AGCT and CMA CGM officers at the terminal were: Phillip Marsham, AGCT CEO; Žarko Acinger, AGCT Commercial Manager; Ognjen Ružić, AGCT Operations Manager; Jakov Karmelić, CMA CGM Croatia Maritime Agency Director; Petar Dolinšek, CMA CGM Ships Crewing Agency Director; Ivan Škoda, CMA CGM Cendrillon Vessel Master; and Niko Marinović, CMA CGM Cendrillon Chief Engineer.

Škoda, the ship’s 36-year old Vessel Master, is a native of Croatia. He is from Mali Lošinj, an island off the shore of Rijeka. Most of the officers on the vessel are from the Adriatic region – proof that Croatians are recognized maritime professionals in the world.

First in ICTSI Group, Poland to be compliant with latest ISO energy management standard

Baltic Container Terminal is the first Polish terminal to be ISO 50001 certified.

Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) was recently granted certification to ISO 50001: 2011 by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).

The certification on the new energy management system, released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2011, was a first not only for the ICTSI Group but also for Poland’s seaports industry.

“Energy management is currently one of the basic areas of interest of companies in all industry sectors, and BCT was one of the first companies to implement ISO 50001 and obtain the certificate in Poland. Since the company was duly prepared, the process itself was smooth and seamless,” says Leszek Sitkowski, Head of LRQA Poland.

An awarding ceremony was held last 30 May at the BCT corporate offices with Krzysztof Szymborski, BCT President, receiving the certification from Mr. Sitkowski and his deputy, Maciej Liszko. LRQA, acting on behalf of LRQA Sverige AB, was the certifying agency, the same agency that certified the Polish terminal with other ISO standards quality management, ISO 9001, environment management, ISO 14001, and food safety, ISO 22000.

and thorough supervision of operations in terms of energy use. The certification also introduces new ways in optimizing processes for energy consumption. Aside from the power savings, the system supports environment care,” says Mr. Szymborski on receiving the certification.

For the last half of 2013, BCT’s Energy Management System Implementation and Maintenance Team focused on devising new ways to conserve and regulate energy use. The team reviewed operations, procedures and costs related to energy consumption in electricity, thermal energy and fuel.

“All BCT employees were involved, from top management to the ranks, including sub-contractors. We’ve conducted intensive training to achieve the necessary competence. We have worked hard for this, but we are aware that it will take at least a year to realize the benefits of what we have started,” says Edward Bratnikow, BCT Quality and H&S Department Manager.

Related to ISO certifications, BCT will subject itself to a complex audit covering the combined management systems ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 in the future.

ICTSI among Manila’s top taxpayers

The City of Manila has once again recognized the economic contributions of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) to the City when the local government named ICTSI as one of the top 10 business taxpayers for 2013. Receiving the award on behalf of ICTSI was Christian L. Lozano, Commercial Director. A recognition event was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel last 19 June. International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) and the Nagkakaisang Manggagawa sa Pantalan ng ICTSI–National Federation of Labor Unions (NMPI-NAFLU), the bargaining agent of the regular rank-and-file employees at Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), recently signed a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

The new CBA was lengthily discussed with increased economic provisions such as guaranteed wage increases and improved employee benefits. Benefits include paid leaves, medical and dental coverage, increase in insurance coverage, hospitalization benefits for employees and their dependents, increase in the Union’s welfare, educational and calamity fund, profit-sharing and retirement, among others.

The CBA, signed last 25 April at the MICT Operations Center Conference Room, covers a period of five years, expiring on 24 April 2019.

The service awardees, 32 employees loyal to ICTSI for 25 years, and 39 employees working for the Company for 20 years, were feted at a thanksgiving celebration, beginning with a Catholic mass officiated by Fr. Jess Malit last 11 June at the CFS cafeteria.

In recognition of their loyalty and service, the 25-year service awardees were each given an incentive of PHP 25,000 cash and a commemorative t-shirt, while the 20 year-service awardees took home a designer watch and a commemorative t-shirt.

Aside from the service awardees, MICT’s top container handling equipment operators for 2013 were recognized during the celebration.

Through the Operations Incentive Program, a performance-based monthly incentive scheme for operators of various container handling equipment, the top equipment operators were determined based on their monthly average productivity for 12 months. The ICTSI Foundation, Inc. has selected the historic coastal town of Balangiga in Eastern Samar as project beneficiary of the ICTSI Group’s assistance to help recover and rehabilitate areas devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in eastern Philippines.

In line with its core advocacy, the youth, and development pillar, education, the Foundation has chosen to rehabilitate daycare centers left inoperative by Haiyan’s storm surge in Balangiga.

Selection of Balangiga was based on a list created by the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (PARR), under the Office of the President. PARR identified private corporations as development sponsors of 24 areas affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

As ICTSI pledged assistance in Tacloban, the Foundation took the initiative in locating other areas with limited assistance. Foundation staff went on-site to four towns in Capiz, Leyte and Samar provinces. The presence of development sponsors in

three of the four areas was reported. Religious-based and international humanitarian organizations were present as well. These organizations have independently begun work in the aspects of housing, health and livelihood.

Most of the basic structures for rehabilitation already received sponsorships, and local governments identified daycare centers and technical schools as those with limited assistance. In narrowing down the list, Balangiga was unanimously chosen as project beneficiary.

The municipal engineer and the municipal social welfare and development officer of Balangiga recommended five daycare centers in five barangays (borough) for repair.

These barangays are Poblacion 1, Poblacion 2, Bacjao, Cansumangkay and San Miguel. Prior to Haiyan, the daycare centers were newly renovated. ICTSI’s Engineering Department assessed the extent of the damage and recommended immediate repair in time for the school opening in July.

Assisted by the municipal government under Mayor Viscuso De Lira, the Foundation held a bidding and selection process to tap a local contractor for the civil works. Aside from repairs, the daycare centers will be furnished with new sets of tables, chairs and other learning materials. Simultaneous repairs of daycare centers are currently on going. The Foundation will turnover the daycare centers to the local government by mid July.

The ICTSI Foundation, Inc. recently organized a one-day career forum for its scholars in Manila.

Some 60 students from the Raja Soliman Science High School, 45 of whom are scholars of the Foundation, attended career talks last 20 May held at the headquarters of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) in Intramuros, Manila.

Four ICTSI officers: Atty. Lirene C. Mora, Senior Legal Officer; Jake Anthony V. Duran, Assistant Manager for Internal Audit; Marie Annalie T. Marfil, Assistant Manager for Public Relations; and Leila R. Peralta, Assistant Manager for Human Resources; volunteered to orient the senior high school students during the one-day forum.

Brigada Eskwela is an annual activity of the Department of Education, where the private sector is invited to participate in preparing public schools for the upcoming school year.

Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT) participated in Posidonia 2014, an international shipping exhibition held at the Metropolitan Expo Center in Athens, Greece last 2–8 June. For five days, Posidonia gathered the international shipping community for business, fora and networking. The event received close to 20,000 visitors and showcased some 2,000 exhibitors from 96 countries, including Georgia’s BICT and the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia (MTA).
