News from VFCNanchang - Formation Flying Ground School and Flight Winners:

Congratulations to the lucky winners! These guys and gals will be spending June 7 learning about the Nanchang and going for a flight. It’s going to be a spectacular day!

Have a great time everyone! The rest of us are happy for you but also more than a little green with envy. It’s going to be an absolutely amazing day!

Attention All You Camera-shy VFC Alumni! We are still looking for photos of our successful (and good looking!) alumni to share with prospective student pilots.

If you completed any of your train-ing, or worked as an instructor, at VFC and you are presently working in the aviation industry (in a plane or on the ground) then we really

want to hear from you! We couldn’t be any prouder of your achieve-ments and we would love to share that pride with our new visitors and students!

So don’t be shy! Take a smiley photo of you living the dream, and email it to: [email protected]

Assistance Required With Special ProjectWe need a lover of books, videos and magazines to volunteer in our Library for some intensive care and spring cleaning!

Do you like organizing things? Can you handle lifting books? Not afraid of getting your hands dirty?

In short: The Library needs your help!! The vid-eos, books and magazines all need to be inven-toried, evaluated and sorted. A couple of people chipping away at it a bit at a time will help us fig-ure out what we have. Then we can decide what to keep, donate to worthy causes…or dispose of (last resort only).

The first job is inventory, and is best done as a team of two: one reads out the author, title, date, category and format (hardcover vs. paperback, etc.), and the other performs the data entry on an Excel spreadsheet, using a Mac laptop with mouse (unless a better database is available – suggestions are welcome).

Please contact Marie Woodruff at [email protected] or (250) 592-5371 for more info. Thanks!

GETTIN’ THEREaviation information for local destinationsDestination: Tofino (CYAZ)

Why Go?

There are books and websites full of reasons why you’d want to go to Tofino. The beaches are spectacular, the local area has a ton of attractions and the flight itself has some amazing scenery – mountains, lakes, islands, etc. All in all, the flight to Tofino is the quintessential West Coast aviation experience. Depending on conditions, rout-ing, etc. figure on about sixty to seventy-five minutes flight time each way. However, unless you go the long way around the coastline, this IS a mountain flight. If you’re flying Club air-craft you need to have taken the Mountain Flying Course to go to Tofino. Weather is also a fac-tor. Tofino is usually accessible in the summer but hit-and-miss during the winter.

From the airport it’s a good twenty minute walk to the beach, and about a ten minute walk to the golf course. To get to town you will need to call a taxi from the airport terminal building or have made other transporta-tion arrangements. Located in the airport terminal building is Orca Airlines as well as Budget

Rent-a-Car. The golf course has a restaurant that’s open during the summer but other than that if you want food you’ll need to head into town.

Getting There

There are basically three routes you can take to get to Tofino. They are:

• Victoria -> Lake Cowichan -> direct to Tofino.

• Victoria -> Lake Cowichan -> Nitinat Lake -> coastline to Tofino.

• Victoria -> Sooke -> coastline to Tofino.

The first option is the most direct route however be aware that between the end of Lake Cowichan and Barkley Sound you’ll encounter some pretty mountainous terrain. The sec-ond route takes a bit longer but is more scenic, taking you past a couple of lighthouses. The third route is the longest route, and it’s the only way to get to Tofino if you haven’t taken the Mountain Flying Course. Fi-nally, no matter which route you take remember you’ll be cross-ing Barkley Sound so you’ll want to have sufficient altitude to reach shore if you need to.

8 June 2014Aviation Excellence Since 1946

Feature ArticleOnce you’re over Lake Co-wichan or out over Sooke you’re out of controlled airspace and on your own. Don’t forget to monitor Pacific Radio on 126.7. You also have the option of climbing higher and requesting flight following from Vancouver Centre.

As you cross Barkley Sound you’ll be heading in the general direction of Ucluelet, probably a good time to start monitor-ing the Tofino frequency since on a nice day there can be a lot of traffic headed in and out of Tofino. Start your descent when you feel it’s safe to do so. You’ll make your initial call to Nanaimo Radio (DON’T call them “Tofino Radio”… they get rather grumpy) before reaching Florencia Bay. As you proceed inbound to Tofino airport watch for the areas that have altitude restrictions.

Local Knowledge

Flying into Tofino isn’t really complicated and you shouldn’t have much of a problem. How-ever, here are a few things to be aware of that you may not find written down:

• There’s a landing fee at Tofino which, at time of writing, is $15.

• Fuel is available by card lock / credit card at the main apron.

• The thresholds of Rwy 25 and Rwy 29 are close together and it’s really easy to get mixed up and land on the wrong runway.

Rwy 25 extends into the trees while Rwy 29 is close to the beach.

• If you’re landing on Rwy 16 it’s better to go around the hill that’s on the approach path as opposed to turning base inside the hill.

• Taxiway Foxtrot has a gravel covered ditch about halfway along. It is passable (or was at the time of this writing) but you do have to be careful if you choose to cross it.

• The quickest way to the beach is south-east along the terminal apron and taxiway Golf to the road, turn right and follow the road down to the main road. There’s a parking lot with beach access across the road. All in all, about a 15-20 minute walk.

• Check out the WWII vintage building that houses the weath-er station.

• You need to be aware of wildlife, particularly deer and bears. Bears often hang out in a small clearing off of taxi way G and occasionally can be seen in the infield between the run-ways. I’ve also heard of people having to go around because of animals on the runway so be on the lookout.

Weather

Tofino has a METAR and a TAF however you’ll also have to engage the Mark I eyeball. Weather at Tofino can change

almost instantly so you’ll want to keep a constant watch on that nearly permanent fog bank sitting off-shore. Because the weather can change while you’re in flight it’s a good idea to make use of Nanaimo Radio or Pacific Radio for up-to-date weather information while you’re enroute. Also, pay attention to fuel reserves and alternates when doing your flight plan. If you get to Tofino and can’t land your only viable alternates are usually Qualicum, Nanaimo or Victoria. Make sure you can get there. Port Alberni is often over-cast when Tofino is so you can’t always count on Port Alberni as an alternate.

Other local weather factors to be aware of include:

• There are no Weather Cams at Tofino but the ones at Am-phitrite Point and Estevan Point Lightstation can give you an idea of what Tofino will be like.

Photo of the Month

This month’s Photo of the Month is from VFC member Peter Bain. Flying in differ-ent locations is a great way to challenge yourself and enjoy a new location frm the air. Next time you’re travelling, plan ahead and see if you can fit a flight into your itinerary. And then be sure to tell us all about it!

I was just over in England and went flying with an instructor – Todd Smith (instructor number 465860D). The flying was done in a Cessna 172M and it took place at the Stapleford Aero-drome (http://www.flysfc.com/) just north of London. I am still in training at VFC, gearing up for the flight test this summer. I practiced some manoeuvres with Todd, which was most helpful. It’s always nice to get a different perspective from a new instructor. He picked up on some of my habits in need of improvement – so, a success-ful flight all round. He gave me credit for the time in my log book with a satisfactory rating, which will get updated in my records when I see my instructor Bren-dan O’Hare next.

On take-off, he noticed that something was wrong, took con-trol and put us off onto the grass. He discovered that the

parking brake had stuck on – something I never go near, as we are told at VFC to not use it. From there, it was smooth flying.

I practiced slow flight, recov-ering from a spiral and steep turns. The landings were inter-esting in that there was only one runway – half paved, half grass – telephone wires to watch out for. No where as sophisticated as the Victoria airport, but a great experience in a beautiful place out in the countryside. Todd has been flying since he was about 12. Not sure how he did that, but nobody’s asking questions. He is destined for a great career in the airline indus-try.

Re: Stapleford Flight Centre (SFC) - it, along with the airfield itself, is a privately-owned and family-run business. Established in 1969, SFC has been training private and airline pilots for over forty years. SFC owns a fleet of more than forty aircraft ranging from Cessna 152 basic trainers to twin-engine aircraft such as PA23 Seneca, PA31 Chieftain and the brand new Diamond DA42 with glass-cockpit technol-ogy.

They also operate modern flight simulators capable of replicat-ing PA31, PA34, PA28 and the DA42 aircraft. The airfield has both grass and hard runways for year-round operations and the Lambourne VOR is on the airfield.

Another huge turnout filled the conference room at the Catalina for good food, good company and good speaker Firat Ataman, whose presentation on moun-tain flying was supplemented by his own entertaining videos of a flight somewhere around Bella Coola. There was a general discussion with hints and advice from the pilots in attendance, good practical knowledge to enhance the experience.

Reminder, next meeting is Tues-day, June 3, at the Catalina. Guest speaker is Jason Grist

from the YYJ tower - we disem-bodied voices will get to meet each other face to face. Always fun and entertaining! Every-thing you wanted to know about operating in the control zone but were afraid to ask.

Let us know if you want to come at 6 PM for dinner so we can give the Catalina a heads-up. Meeting is at 7 PM. For more information contact [email protected].

And remember you don’t have to be a COPA member to at-tend. The group is open to anyone interested in aviation and always more than ready to welcome new members.

COPA Quadrant

For those who missed, we decided to change our June Fly-Out to Friday Harbor on June 7th in or-der to remain in Canada on July 1st. Also our July Fly-out will be both to Alert Bay and Port McNeill.

On June 7th we will be flying to Friday Harbor! Friday Harbor is located on San Juan Island and it is within walking distance of the town. It is a very cute little island town with many ocean side restaurants and I highly encourage everyone to attend!

Usually we always plan for lunch time for our fly-outs. I spoke with the Friday Harbor customs and we are only able to land after 14:30. So this fly-out, we will take advantage of late summer sunsets and will plan for dinner at Friday Harbor. It should be a great sunset flight on the way back!

Subject to customs availability, we will be aiming for 16:00 wheels down at Friday Harbor.

This is a great opportunity to keep up those US customs procedures refreshed! I will make myself available one evening next week for those who still have questions about US Customs Proce-dures. I will be booking a room at VFC where we can go over my presentation or any questions you might have.

Depending on the group, I will try to plan a tour of San Juan Islands and land at different airports, such as Lopez Island and Orcas Island. This would be completely optional but highly encour-aged!
