GRAND KNIGHT’S CORNER

By SK Ron Krom

Brothers and sisters,

How quickly a year flies by! It has been a whirlwind of fun, work, and activity that has enabled me to meet and be with more of you than before. It has been a privilege to represent you and be the “face” of K of C Council 9993, and I hope I have done well.

One never accomplishes all that he wishes, but aiming high is better than settling for a sure thing. My goal was to meet all of you and increase the unity, fraternity, and brotherhood at St. Patrick. That is something I will continue to work on after completing this term in office, since I expect to spend another three years as trustee. Among other things, I remain as acting webmaster, and another personal goal is to make the web page a tool that helps further Father McGivney’s vision for us. As we recruit younger members, we may need to adopt newer technology tools such as Twitter or Instagram. So I hope there will soon be someone who can take my place and bring us to the next level, while retaining ties to older members as well.

Our works of charity this year have been outstanding. We have volunteered, helped others, and raised money for many worthy causes. The Annual Benefit headed by Brian LaMay, Air Force Football Parking led by Frank Peck, and the King Soopers Card Program developed by Herman Jasper have all enabled us to support the Church, Community, Military, Pro-Life Activities and more. The month of June begins the summer break for the Ladies Auxiliary. Officer Installation will be on June 25th at the

Texas T-Bone Steak House. Advance reservations and payment are required. All of the current officers of the Ladies

Auxiliary have accepted an additional term of office for the next year.

The Ladies Auxiliary participated in the annual charity fundraiser for the

State Ladies Auxiliary on May 16. A very interesting program and character

portrayal highlighted the luncheon. Ann Weida, from our Auxiliary, fash-

ioned door prizes from items donated by the members of our Auxiliary.

Members of the Auxiliary also contributed salads for the luncheon menu.

Centerpieces designed just for the event were donated to Holy Apostles

Church for use at the annual Mother’s Day Tea. Approximately $1000 was

earned for next year’s charity donations.

Meetings will resume on September 24th at 6:30 p.m. in the Bonzel Hall.

We will serve drinks and refreshments at the social hour following the meet-

ing. We welcome ladies who are interested in learning more about the Aux-

iliary to attend the meeting and visit with other women of faith.

Gift Card Coordinator

The monthly Statement for King Soopers Gift Cards was just received. From April 19 to May 16 a

total of $9,045 was loaded into our King Soopers Gift Cards. That is bad news and good news.

Bad news, because the amount is less than the previous four weeks. Good news because the price

of gas is down and we were all spending less.

Many thanks for your active participation and making this a success. Keep using your card, and

promote its use with family and friends. See me if you need a card.

May 2015 Knight of the Month

The Brothers of St. Patrick Council 9993 recognize Father Nathan Hinds upon the completion of his journey to ordination to the priesthood on May 30, 2015. Bishop Michael Sheridan laid his hands upon Father Nathan administering the Sacrament of Holy Orders as he became a priest of the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

Our Brother Knight, Father Nathans’s journey to Catholicism and becoming a priest is a sign of the Holy Spirit working in our midst. He grew up in Colorado Springs and was raised in an Evangelical family. As a Christian and young man he noticed the differences in bibles used by different Christian religions and became interested in this. During the early 2000’s while studying at the University of Idaho he one day visited a Catholic church where he encoun-tered a campus youth minister. During the visit he suggested Bather Nathan read Dei Ver-bum, a Vatican II document that explains the origin of the bible. This study was instrumen-tal in Father Nathan becoming a Catholic at age 21.

After graduation and teaching sixth grade he returned to Colorado Springs for a time to help care for his family during his father’s illness. He joined the St. Patrick community. In November, 2004, he joined the Knights of Columbus and Council #9993. He attended daily Mass, assisted with the religious education program, and made visits to parishioners at the request brother Knight, Deacon Dick Brown. Out of this grew his recognition of a calling to the priesthood.

He describes his time in the seminary as a “meaningful experience”. During the pastoral assignments he has enjoyed assisting in the parishes, especially preaching when having the opportunity.

Congratulations Father Hinds. Our prayers are with you!!

Eric Mantz

Newest Saint Patrick Sir Knight by SK Ron Krom

The 4th Degree of the Knights of Columbus is the last and highest degree of the or-

der. The lesson taught for the 4th Degree is Patriotism, and when a Knight reaches

that degree, he achieves the title of Sir Knight. The 4th Degree is also the most visi-

ble arm of the order, the men you see with tuxedos, feathered chapeaus, capes and

swords. The different colors of capes and chapeaus represent different positions

held by members of the 4th Degree.

On May 17th, Eric and 25 other Knights joined the 4th degree in a formal ceremony,

followed by Mass and a banquet. Celebrant at Mass and keynote speaker Father

John Stearns was eloquent in describing what it means to be a Sir Knight.

Father John said that Father McGivney picked the title of Knight because members

are challenged to fight and defend, just as knights of olde. They must fight for their

country, for what is right and just, and defend the defenseless, protect our women and children. Those things mean

something different today, but they are still very necessary. As Catholics, Sir Knights are to lead the way in defending

the faith and the Church—to be loyal followers of Christ.

CONGRATULATIONS BROTHER ROD

AND HERMIE SCHUMANN

Just Married May 23rd

Congratulations to the newest married couple in Council 9993 – Rod and Hermacilla “Hermie”

Schumann. The wedding and Mass was held at St. Patrick, with Father Larry Solan presiding,

assisted by Deacon Dick Brown. Rod wore a traditional Filipino wedding shirt instead of coat

and tie. They also lit a unity candle and offered flowers to our Blessed Mother.

The newlyweds held a reception at Academy hotel for about 40 friends and family, with appe-tizers, a nice buffet lunch/dinner, champagne for toasts, and of course cake. Best wishes to the happy couple for many years of wedded bliss.

The Bottom Line

"$upporting Our Good Works "

What follows is a brief summary of the financial activities associated with our 3rd Degree Council [9993] and 4th Degree Assem-

bly [3049].

May was another great month for Council 9993. Your generous participation in the King Soopers Neighborhood Card Program

has raised $5,899.05 so far this fraternal year. After careful consideration of the financial state of the Council, the Board of

Trustees, with the approval of the Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight, & general membership, recommended a series of

“smaller” donations in the month of April and a few “substantial” donations in May. The distinction comes from a $500 limit

which restricts payments which can be made without a posted resolution. You saw several examples of these resolutions in last

month’s edition of the newsletter in addition to details on the smaller donations. In May, Council 9993 donated $1,000 to Home

Front Cares, the beneficiary of our Monte Carlo night, $1,000 to Pikes Peak Habitat For Humanity, and $1,500 to St. Mary's

High School, a Catholic school which did not receive additional funding from the diocese. These donations are in addition the

$100 to both Life Network and St. Patrick’s for our 2 regular monthly donations.

On the front of regular business, the Council reimbursement our Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight for their attendance of

the State Convention, $200 each. The Lighthouse Media Display in the gathering space required replenishment at a cost of

$238.14 with an income of $169.

If anyone would like more information on the financial status of the Council or the Assembly, please stop by any regular busi-

ness meeting or feel free to contact me directly.

Faithfully yours,

Taylor Lilly

May 2015 Family of the Month

Tom and Mary Jo Resman Family

Tom and Mary Jo Resman met through the St. Pat-rick’s Young Adult Group and were married by Fa-ther Don Dunn at St. Patrick in 1991. They are celebrating 24 years of marriage this year! They have four children: Jacob (21) and Amy (19) who are students at the University of Colorado in Boul-der, and Kathleen (17) and Marie (14) who will be a senior and freshman respectively at St. Mary’s High School.

This family stands out in the way they participate in their many activities as a family, whether it is at church, in school, on vacation, or in service.

Tom and Mary Jo have made it a priority that each of their children receive a Catholic education—and all have attended, or will attend, eight years of Catholic grade school and four years at St. Mary’s. They have been exemplary students and participated in a range of school activities. Jacob and Amy are active with FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Stu-dents) and lead Bible studies while on campus at the University of Colorado.

Kathleen and Marie are also active at school and church. Each is participating in ministries at St. Patrick, whether it be Trinity Singers (Tom plays guitar at the Sunday evening Mass), Extra-Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion or Hospitality Minister (Mary Jo also serves in this manner). At St. Mary’s Kathleen is the stu-dent body president, and active in Students for Life. Marie, just graduated from St. Paul’s School played bas-ketball, with dad, Tom as her coach. A few years back she was the Colorado K of C State Free Throw Champion of her age group.

Much of Mary Jo and Tom’s volunteer activity is invested helping out at their Catholic schools. Tom will be serving his fourth year on the board of St. Mary’s, and is the incoming Board Chairman.

At St. Patrick, Tom and Mary Jo have served13 years on the FOCCUS marriage preparation team. Tom just completed three years on the St. Patrick Pastoral Council.

Fun and community service are also family focused. The have volunteered for many great organizations in-cluding: Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, American Heritage Girls and the soup kitchen. Fun activities: hiking, camping, skiing, travel, climbing mountains and visiting churches when they’re out of town. They are looking forward to a family spiritual pilgrimage to Medjugorje this summer.

Tom joined the order in October. 1996, and is a First Degree Knight. He participates in Council projects in-cluding the monthly pancake breakfast.

Thank you for the gift you are to us as a model of commitment to a Christian Family Life!

Faithful Friar Mike’s Reflection

Padres Ponderings; I celebrated my 31st priestly ordination anniversary on Sunday May 31st with our Knights corporate communion Mass and Breakfast. I wish to thank you all for your encouragement, companionship and long term friendship. As you have heard, Fr. Brian is now a full time parochial vicar at St. Patrick. He has many gifts that you will enjoy. Fr. Larry continues on as pastor for another six years. Therefore you may be asking what will be my status in the near future. I wish I could tell you, however I have heard nothing from the higher ups. As long as that is the case I will be happy to continue sacramen-tal service with the parish. For your information, I would like to let you know that my priestly ministry continues to be fulfilled in other areas of the diocese. I serve as chaplain at Memorial Central Hospital on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have Mass in the Hospital Chapel at 11:30 am on those days and following Mass I visit with critical need patients. Also on Tuesdays and Thursdays I preside Mass at the Benet Hill Monastery in the Black Forest. Mass is at 5pm and is open to visitors. On Weekends and weekdays I preside Mass at the Air Force Academy Community Chapel when called upon. I offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation at these places along with the Anointing of the Sick I also serve the local funeral homes for funeral home services in the community. Being a Knights Chaplain at St. Pat's and Our Lady of the Pines is awe inspiring as I see the faith, dedication and work the men and lady's offer in serving their parishes and supporting their priests. As I celebrate my 31st Anniversary I think of the many opportunities that lie ahead in God's plan and my fiat. Thanks for your love, support and prayers throughout the years and please remember and pray for all the current day Christians being slaughtered and martyred for their faith and belief in Jesus. If we are pronounced dead when our heart stops, why are we not pronounced alive when our hearts starts? Fr. Mike

OUR GOOD WORKS PAY OFF! by Ron Krom

As we near the end of our fraternal year, it is customary to review our financial status. We usually find

that the Lord has rewarded our charitable efforts, and that we have more funds than needed to start the

next fraternal year. That is what happened this year. So our Trustees and Officers looked for worthy

charities that would benefit from those funds.

At a previous Annual Benefit, we donated to the Habitat for Humanity. So that was a community charity

that we felt was a good choice. At the May Social meeting, we presented a check to Chris Median and

Andy Petersen and Chris gave us a good briefing on how Habitat helps put deserving families into homes.

We learned that there is an extensive vetting process for candidates, and that they actually buy the

homes. The homes are not a gift. Chris said that our donation

would go to construction of the Pope Francis House being built

now.

Andy Baldovsky, a member of Council 9993 and his wife Tessie are managers at Renewed Vi-

sion Clinic. There people who can’t afford medical care can get eye exams and glasses. The

clinic accepts used glasses, measures the prescription, and files them to give to their patients.

Sometimes they need to buy glasses when they don’t have the right prescription on hand. Andy

and Tessie approached us for help, and we were able to

grant them a donation. They also gave a great presentation

on their charity, and invited us to stop in and see it. They

would also be glad to accept any used eyeglasses that you no longer need.

Another great charity that we had helped is The Home Front Cares. Al Batey, Grand Knight at Mount

St. Francis and Vice Chairman of THFC, came to receive a check and explain how they help active duty

military and veterans. Their assistance can prevent a family from being evicted or make a crucial car

repair, or pay a medical bill. Their organization has a very low overhead, and most donations end up

helping military families. So there’s how your charitable efforts pay off in caring for our community!

FUN TIMES AT USAFA GRADUATION by Ron Krom

You’ve seen the Air Force Academy graduation reported on TV and in the newspapers. Here is the

rest of the story. In order to get over 20,000 people safely into and out of the stadium, it takes a

courageous band of volunteers to guide them. You take a big, open, odd-shaped field, complete

with humps and bumps and ditches. Then you take a stream of cars driven by people focused only

on getting a parking spot as close and as quickly as possible. Never mind that you are trying to

make straight rows and leave room for cars to exit. While you are pointing to the location you want

them to take, they’re focused and heading for a spot on the opposite side of the field. They are

surprised and sometimes upset when told they must park where directed. Yet most drivers are

thankful to get a parking spot and are quite polite.

During the graduation ceremony, there

was a lull in activity, and we all chowed down on goodies brought by organizer

Frank Peck. There’s always a good time sharing food and fellowship, as well

as enjoying a job well done. The weather even smiled on us until the event

was over. And the Thunderbirds put on a great show. They flew low enough

and were loud enough to set off the car alarms around us. That made the day

a special treat.

Now it took us volunteers 3 or 4 hours getting all these cars into the lot. After

graduation, they all expected to leave at once. At parking lot 5, there were 6

or more exits dumping cars onto one two-lane road. Since cars were parked

on both sides of the road, hundreds of pedestrians were also trying to cross

the road at the same time. Then there were the drivers who wanted to turn

left, even though it was one-way to the right. I found myself at one exit, with cars coming two abreast from 3 directions, all in a hurry to

leave. Fortunately, almost all drivers were pretty courteous, and no one was hit, including us parkers.
