I remember being extremely nervous the first day I started at St. Bartholomew Catholic School, the fear of the unknown. Yes, the secret is out, children aren't the only ones who get nervous on their first day of school...but the moment I saw Mrs. Garcia's warm smile, I knew things would be okay, and I was right. She's not only an ECE, she's an integral part of the kindergarten team, and most importantly, she's my friend. Working with children has always been a dream for me and I know Mrs. Garcia shares those same dreams. I'm so lucky to work with an individual who cares about children as much as I do. I am honoured that Mr. Stépanian decided to nominate the kindergarten team for this wonderful award, I am even more honoured that we have been recognized and awarded by this outstanding organization. So thank you, to "The Learning Partnership" for this special recognition, thank you to the TCDSB for hiring me, Mr. Stépanian for having faith in me, thank you to the fantastic staff of St. Bartholomew for being a support system throughout my two years at this school, to Mrs. Garcia for being my partner and friend, to my family for always being there for me, to the parents for always supporting the kindergarten class and of course the most important thank you, to the students, without you, I wouldn't be here doing what I love, teaching.

S. Cuda

FDK Team

Blessings to the Lord, God the almighty, for giving me the gift of patience to do the job that I am so passionate about. Helping children develop their skills. Love, patience, support, communication and mutual understanding have rewarded us with success. We will continue as a team to do what we do best, nurturing, educating and guiding your children through play based learning. Thank you to my family for the love and support. Thank you to my principal Mr. Stépanian for believing in us and nominating us, to the Learning Partnership Program for recognizing us, to the Parents for your trust, dedication and support you bring to the program and most of all to my dear partner Susanna who came in as a ray of sunshine and brighten the room and everything we did, without her there is no ...us. Thank you all.

M. Garcia

FDK Team

As you are aware, on May 7th, we honoured Susanna Cuda and Marcellina Garcia (the full day kindergarten team from St. Bartholomew Catholic School) for their exemplary partnership, commitment, leadership and dedication in support of young children, parents, The Learning Partnership and its Welcome to Kindergarten program. Attached are some photos of the presentation for your information. Thank you to John Stépanian for his leadership.

Regards,

Valerie.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Caregivers,

Guardians and Community

Members, Another academic year is coming to an end. It is almost unbelievable how time flies. As we wind down, and we look forward to the slower pace of the summer months, we take time to reflect on the past year. Through our many successes, be they academic, athletic, or spiritual, and our many initiatives, it is truly evident that we at St. Bart’s are striving to fulfill the Catholic Graduate Expectations on a daily basis. In fact, June is not only the last month of the academic year but also a month full of passage-of-right and achievement celebrations. It is with sadness that we bid farewell to our FSL teacher M. Joseph who, unfortunately, has been declared surplus following our board generated staffing model. He will be looking to obtain a full-time FSL position (since ours has been reduced by half). Also, Ms. Li leaves St. Bart’s to join the staff at St. René Goupil for a full-time timetable (since our Special Education allocation for next year remains reduced by half). We wish you both well and good luck in your respective new schools and we thank you for your years dedicated at St. Bartholomew Catholic School. The new school communities receiving you in September 2015 are very fortunate.

Grade Eight Graduation Parents are invited to attend our final school mass of the year on Thursday, June 11th at St. Bartholomew Church, 1:30pm. This Eucharistic celebration is also our Graduation Mass and will be followed by our traditional Virtues Awards presentations. This year we will bid our final and formal congratulatory farewell to our graduates in a “Clap Out.” We look forward to this very emotional time for all! It is amazing that this newsletter brings an end to this school year. I would like to thank the entire St. Bartholomew Catholic School community for your support, kindness, faith and generosity. I would also like to thank our teachers for their commitment and devotion. I would like

to thank our students, for we are blessed with a group of well-mannered students who make it a pleasure for me to come to school every day. Lastly, I would like to say farewell to the students leaving us this year. To our G8 graduating students and to our students transferring to other areas, may God bless you wherever your journey may take you. May God continue to watch over everyone and may you have a peaceful and restful summer holiday. On behalf of the Administration and the entire staff at St. Bartholomew Catholic School, we wish you a restful, rejuvenating summer, and we look forward to another enriching year ahead

Yours in Catholic education

Eco-Schools Team News The St. Bartholomew Eco-Team has been busy the last couple of months organizing our Earth Hour in March, our City of Toronto clean-up day in April, and our classroom audits in April. On March 28th students and staff participated in Earth Hour from 10:00am – 11:00am. We turned off our classroom lights, corridor lights, and any electronics, and opened our blinds to let the sunshine in. Earth Hour was a great success. Our Clean Up day went well with students cleaning up our school grounds, and our intermediate students travelled to our neighbouring Park and cleaned up that green area as well. Students participated in the clean-up for 20 minutes. In addition, we began with a school liturgy focusing on the importance of taking care of Mother Earth and we joined in prayer as a school community. We conducted our classroom audits which allowed us to see that we are recycling, composting, and turning off electronic equipment when they are not being used. We look forward to maintaining our Silver Eco-School status for 2015-2016 school year.

Families Not Returning to St. Bart’s September 2015 This is just a gentle reminder to all families that if there is anyone who will not be returning to St. Bartholomew Catholic School for September 2015, (excluding our G8 graduates), it would be appreciated if you could confirm that information in writing as soon as possible.

EQAO Testing Our G3 and G6 students are participating in the Education Quality and Accountability Office’s (EQAO’s) Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics from May 25th to June 5th 2015. The assessment is administered province-wide and is developed by Ontario teachers and assessment experts to reflect curriculum expectations. We thank all of our Grade three and six teachers for their efforts in supporting our students during this testing period.

CAT– 4 Testing Our G2, G5 and G7 students participated

in CAT4 testing from May 4th to June 5th

2015. The results of this testing will not be

used for report card purposes. The data

provides individual student, school and

system indicators of academic performance

which can help in the planning of a good

teaching program for students by identifying

areas of strength and weakness. Individual

students’ and this school’s results will be

available in the Fall of the year 2015. We

thank all of our grade two, five and seven

teachers for their efforts in supporting our

students during this testing period.

St. Bartholomew 2015 Track & Field On Tuesday, May 12th, 2015 our school attended the Track and Field Meet at St. John Paul II. The school team participated in many events such as relay, shot put and long jump. The students had been training hard for this event, which was clearly demonstrated in the events that the students competed in. All of the students who participated in the events tried their hardest and were positive ambassadors for our school. Honorary mentions go out to the following students for qualifying for the Regional Meet: Sydney (200m, 100m), Johne (400m), Sabrina (400m, 100m), Angel (1500m, 100m), Kayleigh (200m), Shannon (200m, 100m), Phoenix (200m), Vaneesha (200m, 100m), Tristan (200m, 100m), Luca (100m), Jumar (100m), Aaron (100m, Shot Put), Zach (800m), Julia (Shot Put), Vasjana (Shot Put). SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS

FRAMEWORK (SCHOOL LEARNING IMPROVEMENT PLAN)

For 2015-2016, there will be a district review of the programming at St. Bartholomew Catholic School. A District review is a non-evaluative process that determines where the school is in terms of its strengths and needs. Its objective is to increase achievement overall and to offer support re: best practices. Please find below the recommendations, as prioritized by staff; these were entered in 2010 District review: - Align curriculum and assessment practices across grade level and division; - Increase use of technology in the school through group problem solving of challenges, teacher in-servicing, use of calculators for students in primary and utilizing the students as a resource; - Plan for focussed intervention for ‘student at risk’ based on data analysis and common assessments and teacher moderation; - Staff focus on reducing gender differences in both achievement and self-perception of their skills; - Increase parent involvement in school academic support; - Provide provisions for ELL for EQAO; School structures to support protection and monitoring of instructional time and sharing of PD. Please stay tuned for more detailed and specific information which will be available in September 2015.

personal items at the time when they are no longer required at school. Thank you for your support in regards to this matter.

Appropriate Dress A brief note of gratitude is extended to all the students, and parents who are fully respecting and enjoying the Appropriate Dress Code at St. Bartholomew Catholic School. The majority of our students are proud to be affiliated with St. Bart’s and wear their appropriate colours proudly every day. We would like to send out a gentle reminder to everyone around about our appropriate dress code to ensure that everyone, including all of our new students are aware of the expectations of all students attending St. Bartholomew Catholic Elementary School. For the rest of the school year and into next year, we will be focussing on ensuring compliance with the appropriate dress code. School colours are white & navy blue.

Warm Weather Reminders! Now that the warm weather has arrived we remind you to: o Send your children with a hat; o Wear sunscreen; o No flip flops are to be worn at school; o Shoulders are to be covered; o Shorts must be an appropriate length

– walking shorts; o Please bring a water bottle to

rehydrate.

Lost & Found Articles We would ask that you encourage your child to check the lost and found articles at school if they are missing articles of clothing. The pile of lost clothing in the lost and found has been increasing. If these articles are not claimed by the end of the school year, they will be donated to charity. You may also call the school and make an appointment to come and check the lost and found articles. Let’s make this a priority!

Immunization Information Keep Our Children Healthy and Our Schools Disease-Free As a parent, keeping your kids safe and healthy is your number one priority. All children attending school between ages 4 to 17 need to be immunized according to

Ontario’s Immunization Schedule. Immunization protects children from many serious diseases that are easily spread in schools.

What’s New? Started in the 2014 / 2015 school year, children need to have proof of immunization against meningococcal disease, whooping cough and chickenpox* to attend school. This is an addition to the existing requirements for proof of immunization against many other diseases. The number of shots required for tetanus, diphtheria, polio and mumps has also been updated. Children who are not fully immunized may not be allowed to attend school.

What You Need To Do Check with your health care provider or local public health unit to make sure your child has all the vaccines needed to attend school. If your child has followed the immunization schedule, no further vaccines will be need. Did you know that it’s your responsibility to report your child’s updated immunization records to your local public health unit? Your health care provider does not report these records for you. To find your local public health unit for more information on immunization, visit ontario.ca/vaccines.

Visitors to the School Toronto Catholic District School Board policy states that all visitors to the school MUST report to the office. This is foremost to ensure the safety of all students. In an effort to promote the independence of the students and to ensure the integrity of programs by minimizing interruptions during class time, we request that students arrive prepared for the school day with all the items they require (homework, lunch, physical education clothing, musical instruments etc.). If you would like to contact your child’s teacher, you may do so through the school office. Please try to make after school arrangements before school. Thank you.

La PASTORALE: OUR CATHOLIC FAITH

Faithfulness As we prepare for the end of the school year, we are focussing this month on the virtue of Faithfulness. As we send our students off for a summer of fun and relaxation and our graduates off into the wider world, we have faith that they will return to us safely to begin another year. The quote from John’s gospel reminds us, “Happy are those who have not seen, yet still believe.” John 20:29 We will encourage our students to continue to put their faith into action by bringing the Gospel spirit into every aspect of their lives. This is how we become true witnesses to Christ, extend the kingdom of God and build a more humane world.

How to Show Faithfulness 1. Being a Catholic is founded in faith – Faith in the Lord 2. Remember that it is through our words and actions that our faith becomes evident 3. Let your actions be guided by Centurion’s words to Jesus “Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed” 4. It is our Faith in God that brings comfort to our lives Quote of the month “Happy are those who have not seen, yet still believe”

John 20:29

Prayer for the End of the Year As we come to the end of another school

year, and may now relax from our studies a little, we pause to thank you, Dear Lord,

for all of Your guidance and support in our work throughout this past year. Please forgive us for any times that we may

have offended You by not using our talents and gifts to serve You and ourselves best.

Watch over us as we begin to enjoy our summer vacation. Keep us safe from harm. We ask this of You, Jesus Christ, our Lord

and Saviour. Amen

First Reconciliation and First Communion “Rejoice with me I have found my sheep who was lost” Early during the month of May, after prayer and preparation, G2 students gathered at church to celebrate God’s forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Their parents presented their children to a priest for him to hear their First Confession. Reconciliation is about the story of the “Good Shepherd” who welcomes with joy the lost sheep and issues the invitation to others. “He took bread, and broke it, and gave it to them.” Beginning May 3rd through to June 15th, our students have received/are receiving their First Holy Communion during weekend masses. Celebrating the First Eucharist allows the students entry for the first time, into the full celebration of the Eucharist. They are sent forth, filled with the Holy Spirit, to continue to share in this holy meal.

In receiving their first Eucharist, children learn that Jesus will always be with them, will help strengthen them, and that He loves them very much. It is a memorable milestone for the students and their families as they grow in their faith. Congratulations to the students who received their sacraments. May you always feel Jesus’ love and presence in your lives as He guides your way and nourishes your faith!

Confirmation “Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit to bring us closer together in the family of the Church.” During the month of May our G8 students received the sacrament of Confirmation. They are making an adult decision to be fully integrated into the Catholic Church community. May the Holy Spirit guide them in their lives. We would like to thank Father Foley, our teachers and the volunteers from the church for preparing the students and organizing this special event.

Without the help of our parent volunteers we would not be able to have pizza and hotdog lunches, Santa’s breakfast, photos with Santa, pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. I would also like to thank the school staff who have helped and have supported us throughout the year. More especially, our utmost gratitude is extended to Mrs. Fernandes who was instrumental in ensuring the success of the collection of funds (the accurate and timely return of pledge forms and moneys) from our Chocolate campaign.

Hope to see all of you in September 2015!

On Sunday, May 3rd, our ten grade seven students departed for Camp Olympia in Huntsville, Ontario. During their three days, the students participated in a variety of leadership activities and enjoyed the great outdoors. Some of our students participated in zip-lining, rock-climbing, the giant swing, in addition to making friends with other students from some of our schools. It proved to be an amazing experience both for the students and the teachers. What was especially exciting was participating in a variety of active games with the students, while enjoying nature in beautiful Huntsville, Ontario. We look forward to going to Camp Olympia again next year!

TCDSB Celebrating Canada Day 2015 Dear Elementary School Principals, Staff and Students, As the school year draws to an end, we are delighted to once again celebrate Canadian pride and diversity with our annual Canada Day festivities. TCDSB Elementary schools will be receiving Canada Day posters to distribute to each of our students. Each poster is an image of the Canadian Flag on one side and has the lyrics to our Canadian National Anthem in English and French on the other. On Thursday, June 25th, we invite all staff and students across the Board to dress in red and white, and gather in your schoolyards, fields or gymnasiums with your Canada Day posters to join in the singing of our national anthem at 9:30 a.m. Our hope is to have all our voices across the Toronto Catholic District School Board raised in song at the same time. Please send photos of your school’s event to our Communications Department ([email protected]) to post on our website and publications. If you tweet your photos, please use hashtag #TCDSBCanadaDay so all can track and follow the wonderful festivities. Please only tweet photos of students who have provided signed releases. We wish you a very happy Canada Day and are looking forward to celebrating with you! Sincerely, Angela Gauthier Michael Del Grande Director of Education Chair of the Board

2014-2015 CSPC Officers

Chair – E. Anastasiadis Vice-Chair – S. Jouri

Secretary – B. Minaudo Treasurer – N. Costa

Welcome to another great and exciting year at St. Bart’s! We would like to cordially invite you to join our Catholic School Parent Council. CSPC is a great way for you to get involved in the school life of your child. We sponsor events that enrich a child socially, emotionally, and educationally, and would love to have your help in that effort. We hope you will become a member of the 2015-2016 school year, even if you are not able to attend the monthly meetings. If you are able to join and/or volunteer for any of our events, please complete the bottom portion and return the completed form to your child’s teacher, in a clearly labeled envelope. A member from our CSPC will be in touch with you by the end of September 2015. Thank you.
