WORDS OF WISDOM
“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of
strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will.”
~Vince Lombardi

As you may have noticed from the cover of this magazine, pro football legend Randy White, has signed on as a promotional partner with UA for another year. We’re extremely excited to continue our partnership with ‘the Manster’. You’ll see Randy in UA recruiting videos, webinar and seminar emails, and on the UA website for contracted and non-contracted Agents.
You can help us spread the word, too. You might want to mention the Manster when talking with prospective recruits about all that UA offers. He’s a terrific conversation-starter. To begin with, you may want to let them know what he’s said about us:
“United American has long history of success and plans for continued growth in the future. Needless to say, I like being part of a winning team.”
I encourage those of you who’d like to meet Randy to stay tuned for details on an upcoming incentive that will put you front and center with the big guy himself. We can’t share the details just yet … but you’ll definitely want to bring your ‘A’ game for a shot at this prize. In the meantime, it’s not too late to make a final push to win our second quarter incentive, described on page nine of this issue. Get ready to aim for the fences to win this one.
THE SUPERSTAR ADVANTAGEThere’s no denying the advantage of adding a superstar to your team, but when that superstar is an established Agent with a fantastic book of business and strong peer connections, the benefits multiply. As you look for ways to grow your team, consider getting to know Agents in your area. You can start by networking
with other licensed Agents on a local or even state level.
So much of your success as an Agent depends on your ability to establish and maintain strong, mutually-beneficial relationships with others – both with clients and other Agents. Of course, with your clients, you already know to check in with them from time to time to make sure their insurance needs are being met, especially if they’ve had any major life changes. But it’s important to keep in touch with your peers as well. Grab lunch, catch a ballgame together, mail them your new flyers or other materials with your Agency info – you never know when that might come in handy.
A GREAT COUPWhen I led a thriving Agency of about 100 Agents in South Florida, I frequently sent mailers about my Agency to area Agents. If they ever became unhappy with their current situation, I hoped my contact information would be within easy reach. Well, one day, that’s exactly what happened. The top-producing Agent from a nearby Agency was so upset with his Agency owner that he grabbed one of my mailers and called me to see what I had to offer. I signed that superstar on a Friday afternoon; by Monday I also had most of the others from his former Agency signed on and set up in their own office building – with brand new office furniture hand-picked by the superstar Agent. We had gone shopping.
Needless to say, the abandoned Agency owner was pretty upset, but he later told me if the situation was reversed, he would’ve done the same thing. Business is business.
So, the moral of this story is to never stop building relationships because you never know
when a superstar will become a ‘free agent’. Let them know about your affiliation with UA, because, like Randy White, they’ll want to be associated with a winning team.
Charles Mankamyer President of General Agents

WELCOME TO
I’d like to tell you about an Agent I met in my neck of the woods some time ago; his name is Mark. When I met him, we always bounced ideas off of each other, and he was really intrigued by my work in life and health insurance. Mark especially enjoyed going into the field with me when I visited clients. After watching him learn more about the life and health business, I encouraged him to get his license, and after not much convincing, he did!
In the meantime, I accepted a job with United American Insurance Company. Mark had seemed to lose momentum in pursuing an insurance career, since he already had a thriving business in a totally different line of work. Even so, I continued to reach out to Mark over the next two years and encouraged him to give this insurance business (this ‘stuff’ as he called it) a try.
THE PHONE CALL THAT CHANGED IT ALLOne day I got a call from Mark. After my relentless pestering him to give this insurance ‘stuff’ a try – he finally did. At first, when he told me, I thought he was joking … but, when I met with him the next time, his voice and expressions showed he was serious about getting involved.
So I asked him, like I ask every other Agent wanting to build a team/Agency, “Are you in or are you really in?” Mark replied, “I am so far in I am drowning and I need your help.” Mark was a very successful man in the
business world; however, he knew very little about the insurance world. We made a plan of action to help him grow and gain more knowledge about the sometimes crazy ‘ins and outs’ of selling insurance.
CRACKING THE BOOKSI first asked him to read up on anything related to insurance business and to attend UA webinars. It was like I had created a monster! After every session he called or emailed me. He always wanted to go to lunch or dinner to discuss what he had learned, and gradually I could see the change in his talk and mindset.
The next step was to teach him the sales process that United American suggests. During the next 90 days, Mark took his lessons to the field, and after every appointment he sent me a text describing how it went. In the beginning, it was rough; but, in that third month, something clicked and Mark began selling policy after policy. That was when we started the journey of building his team/Agency, and to this day, his journey is going strong. To think, just six years ago he was a novice in this industry!
A PHILOSOPHY OF SUCCESSMark believes in the one message we try to communicate to every Agent who joins our United American family – the process we work with is very easy. Really, what makes it so easy is that we are truly helping people
and changing lives with the products that United American offers.
At the end of the day, Mark is someone who gave this business a chance and is now thriving on his own – he’s a superstar in his own right. In closing, here are a couple of things I believe and try to pass on to every person I speak with:
If you believe in what you do, and it comes from your heart to the hearts of the people around you, everyone will see and feel it – and those people will trust you. If you are just trying to sell it and be done, they can also feel and hear it, which already determines the outcome.
The other quote I live by is something an 83-year-old client said to me one day:
“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t force him to drink!” Then, with a giggle, he finished: “But you can feed him salt!”
So what I’m trying to say is, don’t give up when talking with others about growing a team and ‘taking a drink’ of all that UA offers – you won’t believe how much your life might change. It’s changed mine – and I know it has significantly changed Mark’s life, too!

IN the professional sports world, a free agent is a player who’s not bound by a contract and therefore eligible to join any team. Competition for superstar free agents can be fierce. While money plays a big part in who the superstar signs with, other factors can come into play, such as the team’s reputation, potential, coaching staff, teammates, and location.
In the insurance world, the non-captive, independent Agent is much like a free agent. With no binding contract, the independent Agent may choose to work solo or join an Agency. If you’re looking for the next superstar to recruit, take inventory of everything that’s special about your Agency so you can make them an offer they can’t refuse.
To help you get started, we’ve highlighted some advantages related to UA and First UA you may want to promote – because we’re confident you’ll want to help them get appointed with our great Company! Like our superstar spokesperson Randy White says, “I like being part of a winning team.”
MARKETING SUPPORTMarketing assistance can be a terrific added value, even to a superstar with a solid book of business. There are lots of things in this area you can do to help promote your Agents. Social Media is free and a great way to keep your brand relevant in the public eye. If your prospective recruits don’t know how to use Social Media, share your tips with them. Also, let them know about the no-cost, pre-approved ads available through UA and First UA. Include your contact info in the space provided on these professionally-designed ads and you’re good to go!
RECRUITING ASSISTANCEOnce your superstar knows that recruiting help is available, he or she may be motivated to build a team of their own … under you, of course. Randy’s going to be the star of UA and First UA recruiting emails and other marketing materials, but there are many other ways we assist appointed Agents who want to build. We’ll even set up a webinar or seminar for Agents your superstar wants to recruit. Though we present the opportunity, they will be the ones to close and gain newly appointed Agents for their team. Most importantly, let them know they’ll have a recruiting director to consult for all their recruiting needs.
THE ALLURE OF LEADSLeads are a hot commodity in this industry, even to the superstars. So, if you’ve got ‘em, flaunt ‘em. Here are some of the ways our Company helps appointed Agents with leads*:
FREE LISTS of people turning 65 in the ZIP codes where they work.
‘FAST START’ INCENTIVE for the newly-appointed Agents (receive 1,000 direct lead mailers)
ONGOING MONTHLY INCENTIVES (Agents can receive 1,000 to 2,000 direct lead mailers)
OPTIONAL LEAD ACCOUNT – 15% of Annualized Health sales and 10% of Life sales are set aside in a special lead account.
LEAD REFERRALS FROM UA – When prospects reach out to us for coverage, we typically send them to our Agencies
COMPREHENSIVE LEAD VENDOR LIST of over 40 companies, many of which offer exclusive UA pricing and discounts.
*Terms and conditions of incentives apply. May not be available in all states.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWEREducational opportunities for your Agents are great to spotlight when recruiting. No matter how successful an Agent becomes, he or she can benefit from additional training, especially in an area that could open up an avenue to new business. UA has been selling Medicare Supplement insurance since Medicare began. We follow trends in the Senior market as well as the latest legislative developments related to Medicare and pass this information on to our Agents in Summit, Chats With Chuck, and through email. This information is also used in our no-cost, live webinars that all appointed Agents can attend to learn about sales during the Medicare enrollment periods, turning 65 leads, and more.
A REPUTATION OF STRENGTH AND ENDURANCENothing puts the sparkle in your bid to a superstar like a good reputation. If you’ve established a strong following as a team leader or Agency Owner and built a big book of satisfied clients, you’ve likely earned a solid reputation in your community. For those with less experience, carriers with a good record of strength and endurance may help bridge the gap. We’re proud to say that UA and First UA carry an A+ Financial Strength rating from A.M. Best Company (as of 6/15).
