WHERE’S THE BEEF???

The Wichita A’s held a picnic at Watson Park in

place of the regular meeting. Everyone was to bring a side

dish or desert which is coordinated with the hotdogs. Every-

one arriving was carrying a dish. After some time we noticed

no one was arriving with charcoal, hotdogs or buns. As it

turned out the dirty dogs never appeared.

I was told next year will be different. Everyone had a

good time and we did walk away with full tummy’s.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

I have enjoyed doing the newsletter for the last 13 years. I would like to give the opportunity to someone else by the end of November. This is a very rewarding task for the club. Please notify me or one of the officers of the club if you would like to be the next editor of the Rumbleseat Review. One other note: due to family vacation in July you will receive the emailed version of the newsletter a couple of day later than usual. Linda Kibbe, Editor

WICHITA A’S BOARD MEETING MINUTES

The Wichita A’s board met on May 11 and took action and/or discussed the following: • Wayne Orr was nominated as our next MAFFI brick recipient • Board decided to continue using US LOGO as our club logo company • Room arrangement from June-Sept. for club meetings will be shifted to the south side of our building so that the sun

coming through the windows on the west doesn’t continue to be a problem • Members wishing to have detailed financial information or board meeting minutes only need to ask our treasurer and/or

our secretary and copies will be made for them • Ideas for supporting the expansion of the MAFFI Museum will be discussed at our Oct. club meeting • Will bring up at the next club meeting the cancelling of our annual club charity auction • Ask for a volunteer to be our club’s historian-to collect and catalog all of our club’s old records • Possibly helping to plan a Santa Fe Trail tour with the Flint Hills Touring A’s

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As this newsletter goes to print I find myself half way between Colorado and Mis-souri on a Biking Across Kansas Tour. Bicycle tours, like Model A tours give you a chance to slow down and see the country. I should be back in my trusty Model A in time for the monthly meeting . Best Regards,

Randy Frazer, President

PAST TOUR

MAY 18 DAY TOUR

We managed to get to all of our places to see today before the stormy weather approached. We met at M and M Insurance where Jim Newhouse has his business in a 1931 Packard Dealer-ship building. Patrick who works for him has built several oak offices and restored a number of old cars for Jim. Then off we went to Kansas Dry Stripping where Ryan Scroggin informed us what they do at their busi-ness plus show us many old signs. After lunch we stopped at Larry & Debby Justice's place and Debby gave us a lot of information about beekeeping. There were fourteen model A's and one modern car. It was a pleasant day and lots of visiting was done.

OMAHA REGIONAL MEET

On Sunday, June 4th, 7 Model A's and one modern car left at 8:30 am for Omaha, NE with an overnight in Marysville, KS. Scott Guinty & Judy Hill, Gilbert & Joanna Adams, Jim & Carolyn Nungesser, Shorty Hayes, Jim & Brenda Broadhead, Bob & Barb Phye, Richard & Linda Kibbe and Lawrence & Lenette Kottas attended the regional meet. We arrived in Omaha Monday afternoon and attended the Welcome Party that evening. Brenda Broadhead was the lucky winner of door prize consisting of a Notepad Holder.

On Tuesday, everyone drove to the SAC & Aerospace Museum to tour and have a BBQ lunch. After lunch Broadhead's went to the Lee G. Simmons Conservative Park & Wildlife Safari. Tuesday evening was an event called “Hobby Night”. Those who had a hobby set up their table to display their hobby. Hobbies ranged from quilts, magazine ads, wooden gear shift knobs, and much more. It was interesting to visit the people about their hobbies.

Wednesday some visited Boys Town before the Ladies and Men’s luncheon was held. The Hubley Derby Races were held that evening with no winners from the Wichita A’s. Most members visited the Henry Doorly Zoo on Thursday morning. The Ice Cream Social and Raffle Drawing was held that evening. All the Wichi-ta A’s attendees, except Broadheads, won a raffle drawing.

Friday morning, we toured the CLAAS of America Factory, where they assemble combines. That evening was the Farewell Banquet.

We made the trip home in one day. There were no Model A prob-lems until someone mentioned in El Dorado how lucky we have been. We drove no further than Towanda, KS and the Kibbes got a flat tire.

There were 116 registrations at this meet. This was a great regional meet and we had a lot of fun.

As spring arrives we hope this finds you doing great, with plans for 2018NYtoPARIS progressing as expected. The route is 99% complete, with special events coming together and we are talking with the cities, venues and motels along our route. George Schuster covered the globe in 169 days; traveling through farmers fields, cow paths, feet of snow, rain, mud axle deep, and portions of route canceled due to the terrain being impassable. Well, today we'll do it much quicker with 98% of our roads paved and the cows are fenced, although mother nature will have a surprise for us from time to time. We all understand that there are likely to be some things beyond our control, all part of this "bucket list" Driving Adventure. One question is the world political climate, which MIR watches continuously. MIR has 30 years of experience in this part of the world, and they are not currently encountering any problems in the countries we will be traveling through with their tours. This is something that Doug Grimes and his staff monitor daily as they have tours in Russia, China, and Europe taking place on a regular basis. We will have two manned booths at the Hershey AACA Auto Show, Oct 4-7, 2017. If you have never attended Hershey, it is a one of a kind with thousands in attendance. We will be displaying two cars while at Hershey, and if you would like to exhibit your around the world car please call me. There are also plans for attending additional car shows and Concours events during 2017 and early 2018. Something we want to stress to everyone - This is your trip!!! If there is an event in your local area that might be of interest for us to attend, just let us know. More importantly, study the route and if there is something or someone (perhaps passing close to family) you want to see or do, please advise. Again, THIS IS YOUR TRIP! Following is the USA Itinerary. Japan and Asia-Europe 2018 will be sent later. USA: Jun 19 - Arrive NYC Jun 20 - Depart NYC Jun 21-22 - Buffalo Jun 23 - Depart Buffalo from the spectacular Pierce-Arrow Museum Jun 24 - Vermilion, OH - 232 miles Jun 25 - Valparaiso, IN - 302 miles (by-passing Chicago) Jun 26 - Cedar Rapids, IA - 277 miles Jun 27 - Columbus, NE - 366 miles Jun 28 - Sidney, NE - 277 miles Jun 29-30 - Cheyenne, WY - 100 miles (planning noon arrival) special events at Plains Hotel Jul 1 - Evanston, WY - 358 miles Jul 2 - Wendover, UT - 308 miles Jul 3 - Tonopah, NV - 269 miles Jul 4-5 - Reno, NV - 257 miles (Happy Fourth of July) home of the Thomas Flyer

We may detour off original route here and drive through Yosemite National Park. If not, we will return to Tonopah and return to original route. Jul 6 - Yosemite City, CA - 226 miles or Tonopah, NV - 269 miles Jul 7 - Ridgecrest, CA - 275 miles Jul 8 - Fresno, CA - 221 miles Jul 9 - Oakland, CA - 235 miles This evening we will have a relaxed dinner cruise to celebrate crossing the USA. Jul 10 - Make or arrange for any car repairs needed prior to shipping. Once your car is ready for shipment, drop off for shipping and return home. The above are largely complete as of today, with minor changes in the coming weeks as details come together. Plans are to have final plans NLT than July, and provide all pricing at that time. Have a Great Day! Jack Crabtree Found more info on their website: http://www.2018nytoparis.com/home.html

A Model A club member, T. R., had breakfast on Thursday morning as usual with others. After leaving he stopped at Johnson’s to fill his gas tank and upon leaving his Model A would hardly run to make it home. He called his wife when he made it home to leave so they jumped in to their other Model A and headed for the Model A function. On the way the wife said your gas gage indicates it is almost empty and he said I just filled it. You can guess the rest of the story.

THE STORY OF THE FILLED GAS TANK

Page 8: June 2017 July 2017 August 2017

Page 8 Rumbleseat Review June 2017

If you have a problem in the ignition circuit. Here are the checks to make: Yellow wire connected from post on starter switch to terminal box post (post on passenger side of terminal box). Ammeter (-) side connects to passenger side post on terminal box. Ammeter (+) side connects to driver side post on terminal box. Black wire connects from driver side post on terminal box to coil (-) terminal. Red wire connects from coil (+) terminal to ignition switch. Yellow/Black wire also connects from driver side terminal box post to the cut out terminal. That completes the ignition

wiring except for the ignition cable and distributor plate. Here is a voltage check of the circuit: Connect the (+) side of your volt meter to a good ground point on the engine or frame. Touch the (-) probe to the passenger side terminal box wing nut. Read 6 volts. Touch the probe to the driver side terminal box wing nut. Read 6 volts. Touch the probe to the (-) terminal on coil. Read 6 volts. Touch the probe to the (+) terminal on coil. Read 6 volts. Place a piece of paper between the point contacts. NOW TURN IGNITION KEY ON. Touch the probe to the end of the points arm, read 6 volts. Remove paper between points. Open and close points and look for spark each time points open, (no spark means bad

condenser, replace condenser). If points are sparking then disconnect the coil center (high tension wire) from the distributor cap (leave connected at

distributor end). Place the free end of the coil wire about 1/8" from one of the engine head nuts. Crank the engine over with the ignition key on. There should be a bright blue arc from the coil wire to the nut (ground point). No arc means bad coil.

Having said all of that, there are several things to check for. New condensers can go bad and new coils can go bad. But I would first look for something that may be shorting the circuit or causing an open in the circuit. Some of the other things to check are: Bad Ammeter. If ammeter has open circuit, all voltage is lost to the coil. You probably burned the wiring up be-cause of loose connections on the back of the ammeter, or missing rubber grommet through center of terminal box, causing the ignition cable to short against terminal box posts, causing large current draw to burn wires. Do not screw ignition cable into the distributor too far. It can short out if screwed in too far. Make sure all nuts on the terminal box posts are tight. Also the two rivets on the bottom distributor plate sometimes get loose (especially on the reproduction plate) and short out the bracket it attaches. - Les Andrews, 1998 Technical Director This information was copied from the MAFCA web site at: http://mafca.com/tqa_electrical.html

Vintage Purse Display at the Model A Museum

A new exhibit at the Model A Mu-seum features vintage purses from the early 1900’s with special focus on the purses from the Model A Era. These lovely bags were recently donated by Cliff Ladman of West Milton, Ohio in memory of his wife Ruby, who had collected Model A Era fash-ions over a period of many years. On September 16, 2017 during Model A Day at the Museum. Judith Coebly will be presenting a seminar entitled “Vintage in Style: From Pouch to Purse”. Her extensive display of purses from 1700 to mid 1930’s will be on display for you to view. Accompanying her power point presentation, you will receive 4 handouts: (1) History of the Handbag: From Pouch to Purse Timeline, (2) Definitions Helping Us Understand the History of the Handbag, (3) Victorian “Language of the Flowers” on Beaded Purses and Important Firsts used in Dating Handbags and (4). Bibliography. Please come to the museum and see our new purse display and other beautiful fashion items that are on display. Make a point to visit us during Model A Day, Sep-tember 16, 2017 and take in the seminar as well. Our museum has something for every-one who loves the Model A!

May 17, 2017 In Due Time Your MAFCA dues will be going up effective January 1, 2018. The Board of Directors has done everything possible in the past few years to avoid an increase, but it is now time. The chart below shows the history of dues increases at MAFCA.

Increases have been necessary every 7.2 years on the average. It has been 10 years since they were last increased and costs of everything have increased. We have been able to make great savings by changing printers for The Restorer Magazine and taking advantage of the latest technology. As you know the magazine is now 100% color, 64 pag-es long and it is the finest automobile magazine published today. Our single greatest source of income is membership, representing almost ¾ of our funding. We have been aggressively seeking new members, but have also been losing members at a high rate

due to age. As a consequence our membership has been staying about the same for the past few years. This essentially means we have been functioning off a fixed income. Our costs for production of The Restorer, maintaining a building, and keeping our small staff of 2 ½ people have ris-en regularly. We have made a number of cuts, but are almost at the point where income, will not cover expenses. Those of you who study the annual financial statement know that MAFCA has funds in reserve. We are self-insured against earthquakes and some other potential threats, the amount of reserves is far below the amount necessary. This dues increase will help reduce our risk as well as support our continued services to members. Along with the dues increase we will provide all members a copy of the digital Restorer. The digital Restorer has proven very popular with many of our members. It allows you to access the magazine from any Wi-Fi enabled device – your computer, laptop, tablet, or phone. We have been charging and extra $5 for the digital edition, but will not include it. The new dues are: U.S. Membership $50 Canada/Mexico (U.S. Currency) $60 International (U.S. Currency) $68 International digital magazine only $40 We trust you will understand the need for a dues increase after ten years and continue to support the Model A Hobby.

Dance Frocks And one brief wrap

Surprisingly easy to make is this short fitted wrap with the graceful flared sleeves and pointed shoulder yoke. Flat crepe, lame or satin could be used as successful-ly as velvet. It is a variation of the tied jacket shown on page 98 of this issue.

Warm summer evenings bring the need or cool and casual frocks which will fit into almost any occasion. They should fit into almost any allowance too. One wrap and one pair of sandals will do for several dress-es, providing the colors are chosen with care. If the brief wrap at left were a soft blue tone and the sandals matched they would go with several colors.

The first of the trio of summer dresses planned to go with the short blue wrap is a crisp white organdie trimmed with a blue clasp. It is made along simple an simple and sophisticated lines. The next dress is printed chiffon, pink pastel tones mingled in a vague flower pattern. The bunch of flowers tucked into the narrow belt matches the blue off the shoes and wrap. The third dress is lace-a supple dull lace falling in long straight lines. It has aa little jacket of its own but it goes charmingly with the velvet wrap for the color is soft blue with inserts of black lace. Copied from the Woman’s Home Companion June 1931 is-
