The month of June is upon us summer weather has arrived and our environment is in

full rejuvenation June a month of graduations weddings and other fun and special

events If you have graduates in your family this is an especially meaningful event to

celebrate at this point in time all the best to all our Saprae and Draper graduates

Tree Canadarsquos ldquoReleaf Programrdquo has begun in our neighbourhood Planting of seed-

lings began on May 24th and will be finishing up by the time you read this column It was great that the

initial focus of Releaf was in Saprae Creek and it signals the beginning of many replanting and refor-

estation efforts that we will see over the next couple of years Please remember to respect the efforts

to get our reforestation underway and keep out of the areas where trees were cleared under the Tree

Hazard Removal Program as this is where the planting of seedlings has and will take place Signage

alerting people to the project will be posted in strategic locations to advise all of the reforesta-

tion effort Thanks ahead of time to everyone for working together to make this project a success

Concerning the road water and sewer projects A lot of competing information and ideas are floating

around the RMWB administration offices and throughout the social media universe I do not have a

definitive report to give you right at this point but I can say the following at this time Council has had a

workshop on the entire project and our engineering team is coming forward with a comprehensive

update on the project at the June 13th Council meeting

What I am focused on at this point are some of the details about the project as that is where the devil

is as they say A protocol was set up well over two years ago that promised if someone was building or

rebuilding in the southern communities then if they upgraded their septic system to a compatible tank

that would be able to be hooked into the new sewer system that was coming to their neighbourhood

then the RMWB would pay the cost of pumping out their tank until the new hook up occurred

Post fire there are obviously a lot of people that are rebuilding and most if not all have expressed a

desire to put in a compatible tank for hooking into the new system On the basis of the above it is my

position that the RMWB needs to honour their promise to pump out the tanks without cost until the

new connection is made True the RMWB never thought that they would have to pump out so many

tanks but given that they have basically put all private sector pump out suppliers out of business and

further that the residents are helping out by putting in those new tanks there is a need to honour the

pump out promise Tank replacement by many will mean this project can be completed faster than

originally planned and this will save money at the back end of this project for the RMWB

So I am committed to using all the political force that I can muster to remind my colleagues of the

above and get confirmation by June 13th hopefully that we will stand by our commitment to the

residents of the southern hamlets I have every reason to believe that this will be the outcome of the

planning that our Engineering Department is doing and the debate we will have at Council concerning

this issue All the best to everyone working on a rebuild and I hope everyone will have the time this

summer to take some breaks and enjoy what is looking to be a great summer

love and care for any animals within the prevision of Bylaw Services

vices

Parvo ndash What is it Canine Parvovirus commonly referred to as Parvo is a virulent and highly contagious disease that can infect dogs It is typically found throughout the environment and puppies unvaccinated dogs and dogs with low immune systems are most susceptible Canine Parvovirus awareness is extremely important so you can take steps to prevent your beloved

pet from contracting this aggressive and often fatal disease

Where can my dog get it from

Because it can survive in extreme conditions Canine Parvovirus is found in virtually any environment It is shed in feces by an infected animal and can easily transfer directly from dog

to dog or on toys collars food dishes etc It can even hitch a ride on clothing shoes and hands

What are the signs of infection

Canine Parvovirus attacks the lining of the small intestines and infected dogs may be l ethargic and suffer abdominal pain vomiting and severe and possibly bloody diarrhea Prolonged vomiting and diarrhea can very quickly result in life-threatening dehydration so it is important to seek help if you notice these symptoms Prescribed treatment combined with intensive nursing care may involve medications for pain nausea and diarrhea and rehydration with IV fluids in a veterinary hospital Without medical care dogs may experience severe pain and succumb to the disease within 48 to 72 hours after the first

signs are seen

How can I prevent my dog from getting infected

Because there is no certain way to avoid exposure to the virus the most effective way to avert Parvovirus infections is vaccination Local veterinarians can help determine the specific disease-prevention needs of your pet They will create a safe and effective vaccination protocol to avoid Canine Parvovirus and other common and potentially deadly

infections

What services are in my community to help reduce risks to my pet

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo provides Animal Care and Control Services to address the communityrsquos animal concerns The Animal Control Bylaw in place is supported by Bylaw Officers to promote education about responsible pet ownership Complaints may involve barking animal bites animal defecation running at large and off-leash parks Services for registered pets include return home free of charge confidential health document storage and in the unfortunate event of an emergency pet care support and rescue The Animal Care Facility provides professional sheltering services so if your pet is injured while lost or you cannot claim it immediately it will receive prompt veterinary attention and be looked after in a

So I am committed to using all the political force that I can muster to remind my colleagues of the

above and get confirmation by June 13th hopefully that we will stand by our commitment to the

residents of the southern hamlets I have every reason to believe that this will be the outcome of the

planning that our Engineering Department is doing and the debate we will have at Council concerning

this issue All the best to everyone working on a rebuild and I hope everyone will have the time this

summer to take some breaks and enjoy what is looking to be a great summer

nity safety and responsible pet ownership

love and care for any animals within the prevision of Bylaw Services

to do your part as well

Within the RMWB it is a pet ownerrsquos lawful duty to register pets within 14 days of becoming a pet owner or taking up residency within the Municipality With the estimated pet population versus the number of registered pets we know compliance to our regionrsquos Animal Control Bylaw is not where it should be There are many great benefits to licensing your pets- should your pet ever get lost or in the unlikely yet possible event of an emergency or evacuation a registered pet is easily identifiable and returned to its owners as quickly as possible- at no cost to its owners Through compliance having the most accurate pet population documented can iden-tify the needs for our region in terms of recreational pet services health services as well as emergency response ser-

vices

Another great benefit of licensing your pet is that itrsquos extremely affordable For only $1500 annually all neutered pets (cats and dogs) can be official RMWB residents if your pet is still intact the fee is $5000 and pet owners over the age of 60 years can register their furry companions at no cost Exotic pets such as reptiles birds and other pets are also

Because there is no certain way to avoid exposure to the virus the most effective way to avert Parvovirus infections is vaccination Local veterinarians can help determine the specific disease-prevention needs of your pet They will create a safe and effective vaccination protocol to avoid Canine Parvovirus and other common and potentially deadly

infections
