Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our Super School News program Join the volunteers for Super School News (www.rmpbs.org/ssn ) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast. Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station. We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan Barber [email protected]. Festival Volunteers for KUVO Needed Assist with representing KUVO at summer festivals on weekends. It’s a great time. Contact Arvida Rascon [email protected] to learn more and to assist. Daytime Tour Guides/Ambassadors Needed!! Do you have a few hours a month? (Most tours are scheduled during the day but there are some occasional evenings too!) Join the fun of taking small groups around the Denver station and informing folks of all ages about the wonders of Rocky Mountain PBS. It’s easy – we have tour scripts and we train you. Generally, our tours last approximately an hour. You don’t have to be an expert. Just bring your smile and laughter with you. Tour guides are some of the best goodwill ambassadors that we have. Rocky Mountain PBS is committed to our public and that means that we welcome the public into our station more than any other TV station in town. We need your help. If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please contact Susan Barber [email protected] and we will have some fun! Help Us Preserve Our Programming-Station’s Archived Memories Project! Are you a fan of Rocky Mountain PBS and have enjoyed our programming over the years? If you answered yes, we would love to have your help preserving these productions. It’s both a walk down memory lane and a peek into the future. Join other volunteers who are doing this preservation work with the Station’s Archived Memories project. Basic computer skills would be needed and database experience is a plus. You will be trained by fellow knowledgeable volunteers. This is an on-going weekly opportunity for 4 hours/week on Mondays between the hours of 9 am and 2 pm. If this interests you (and we hope it does!), please contact Susan Barber [email protected] Thanks! Photo Research and Cataloguing-Station’s Archived Memories Project Assist with tracking and logging photograph’s for the station that stretch back 60 years up to yesterday. Articles 2 Things to Know about Rocky Mountain Public Media……. Introducing the Buell Public Media Center! The Buell Foundation has contributed $6 million to the new RMPM building to be constructed at 21st and Arapahoe Street. Local RMPBS productions and 2 partner pieces have been recognized. Read more about our talented staff and productions by clicking here http://www.rmpbs.org/about/awards/emmy-nominations-2017/ Update on Federal Funding from RMPM CEO, Amanda Mountain This week (week of May 22nd) the President issued his full budget proposal to Congress. As expected, it eliminates funding for public media starting with the fiscal year that begins October 1, 2017 by rescinding all but a token amount of CPB’s previously enacted FY 2018 advance appropriation. PBS has issued a statement that underscores that funding cuts would be a tremendous loss to our country, and would be especially devastating to rural and underserved communities. CPB and APTS also released statements, which you can read here (CPB) and here (APTS). There will be key moments when we must raise our collective voices to make a strong case for federal funding. This is one of those moments. We will continue to share our stories of local impact that reiterate our value to Coloradans. In addition, APTS and NPR have launched a redesigned ProtectMyPublicMedia.org that makes it easy for our supporters to contact members of Congress. Meanwhile, PBS will continue to promote the “I Love PBS” frame for profile pictures on Facebook, with almost half a million people adding it to date. The House and Senate will take up their own budget resolutions after the Memorial Day recess before appropriators draft FY 2018 spending bills later this summer. Ultimately, the full House and Senate must pass identical spending bills before sending them to the President. Volunteer Spotlight: Welcome Lorelle Giannelli!

She received an MILS from SUNY Buffalo and before that, an MA in Criminal Justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Tidbits of History About Rocky Mountain PBS By Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived Memories What did “art” and “horsemanship” have in common in 1964? Art and Horsemanship were topics of two new locally produced summer series that premiered on KRMA-TV, Channel Six, in June of 1964: Gallery 6 (June 2) and Horsemanship (June 4).

In June 1964, GALLERY 6 was a new television concept devoted to exploring thoughts, ideas and work of local and regional artists and art enthusiasts. Hosted by Will Howard, the program was a series of half-hour programs, each exploring the thoughts and the work of local artists. Through the magic of television, talented painters, sculptors and more were introduced to educational television viewers. On its inaugural program, Thomas Berger, a tempera-relief artist, discussed and presented examples of his work. Berger had exhibited throughout the country. One of his paintings was accepted for display in the White House by the late President

Gallery 6 host, Will Howard (left) and sculptor, Edgar Britton Kennedy. Other artists featured during the 5-week GALLERY 6 series included Olive Colhour who shared drawings in stone, known as intarsia plus Hans and Ellis Gallos who explained their stained-glass art through their pieces ranging from church windows to lamp shades. Other local artists that were featured included Edgar Britton (photo above), one of the leading sculptors of the country, Mark Zamantakis, master potter who taught with Denver Public Schools for 26 years and William Sanderson who was voted one of Colorado’s most influential artists of the 20th century. The second local production to premiere in June 1964 was HORSEMANSHIP. It was a four-part series of instruction in horses and horsemanship for the western pleasure-rider. Host E. E. Wyland (photo), director of the famed riding club Westernnaires from Lakewood, utilized both film and live demonstration in each program. The program was intriguing to anyone that had ever ridden or wanted to ride a horse. Wyland’s program offered tips for safety from the Humane Society.

Wyland Topics of the program HORSEMANSHIP included: - June 4: Ancient history of the horse and man's use of it; types of horses and the value of riding - June 11: Equipment used, the art of saddling and mounting - June 18: The technique of riding, devices used to control the horse - June 25: Costs in caring for a horse along with points to consider when buying a horse.

Volunteer at Rocky Mountain PBS

Volunteers play a critical role at Rocky Mountain PBS. The Rocky Mountain PBS volunteer corps donates (on average) 15,000+ hours per year. They expand the capacity of the organization in order to enhance the public outreach and sustain viewer support of the mission--to inspire people to engage in deeper, more meaningful ways with the world around them. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to work together supporting and leading station initiatives. We hope that you might consider donating your time and talent to Rocky Mountain PBS. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities and new opportunities are constantly popping up. The best way to learn about these is to sign up in our database or contact volunteer coordinator, Susan Barber ([email protected]). To sign up in the database, go to www.rmpbs.org/volunteer and click on “Sign Up to Volunteer.” If you are in our database, you will receive monthly updates on volunteer news and opportunities.
